Seven months of 2009 are completed - what will August bring? For me, Grandpa Camp starts on Monday with Lucas arriving expecting a full week of fun activities with this old guy...I hope there is time for naps, and blogging! Hopefully, I will be recovered enough to take Linda on vacation at the end of the month. What happened today?
* Online by 8 a.m., read email, blogs and Twitter. Posted Are you ready to embrace these changes? about changes to the FHL/FHCs and then got cleaned up.
* Wrote Same house, 103 years later? and scheduled it for early afternoon.
* Left at 11:10 a.m. for Costco and a hot dog, then looked at GPS units before picking up George for our walk on the bayfront. Beautiful day - sunny, blue sky, 75F, gentle breeze, good conversation. Was home by 1 p.m.
* Read everything, answered some email, wrote up one of the CVGS queries to send out, and then worked in my database adding and correcting source citations until 5 p.m. Where did the time go?
* Went in at 5 p.m. to read paper, watch TV, eat dinner, and was back online by 6 p.m. Read more, wrote Almost as good as being there? and thereby tying the record for most posts with a question mark in one day.
* Back to the TV at 7 p.m. for the Padres game. Fell behind 7-1 in the 2nd inning, but clawed back to win 11-7 over Brewers. Watered the back yard and front plants, then read my JA Jance book - almost done!
* Back online at 10:15 p.m. - read everything, wrote this post, will check in on Facebook and go take my walk.
Genealogy today was 8.0 hours - 2.0 hours reading email, blogs and Twitter, 2.0 hours writing and researching blog posts, 1.0 hour on CVGS query, and 3.0 hours on genealogy database work.
Genealogy and family research are an obsession for me. Yea, verily, I am a Geneaholic!

Genealogy Journal - 30 July 2009
My mother would have been 90 years old today. I wish that I could speak to her again and ask her more questions - especially about the pictures in her father's scrapbook!
* The GE appliance repairman came this morning, and fixed the switch on the stove that had burned out. Then he found the real problem - the stove top burners are sparking and shorting out, and are an electrocution hazard! He will order more parts and come back to fix all four burners, probably next week.
* Finally on the computer by 9 a.m., read email, blogs and Twitter, and started work on Standardizing names in family trees. Got cleaned up, and came back and posted "Cemetery Sexton" in Graveyard Rabbit Online Journal.
* Ate lunch at home, and went off to the library in order to finish up the City Directories query. Was home by 1:30 p.m.
* Created screen shots and then wrote Making Ancestry.com Index Updates and posted it.
* Decided to work in my database creating more source citations. I have quite a few in my Notes already, so it was a matter of switching between Facts and Notes in FTM 16 to copy and paste from one to the other. Got most of the census and other citations on the Carringer family done. Still lots to do!
* At 5:15 p.m., we left for dinner with our neighbors out to Oggi's, a Pizza and Sports place in Otay Ranch. Linda and I had pizza and Ruth and Kurt had FettuAlfredo. We were home by 7 p.m., but Linda had lots of prayer chain requests to do on the computer so I read the paper and my book and watched TV.
* Finally back on at 9 p.m., read everything, then remembered about the Carnival of Genealogy, and wrote 18 April 1906 - San Francisco - They Were There. Then wrote this post and I'm done.
Genealogy today was 8.0 hours - 1.5 hour reading everything, 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 1.5 hours on CVGS query, and 2.5 hours on database.

Genealogy Journal - 29 July 2009
It was a busy genealogy day with blogging, the CVGS program meeting, the Padres game and lots of reading.
* Read email, blogs and Twitter, then wrote Wordly Wednesday: Family Photographs - Post 66: School Days. Worked in Ancestry.com for awhile on the enhanced record image pages, and then wrote Ancestry.com Changes Record Image Pages. surprised that only one other geneablogger wrote about this!
* Wrote the Footnote.com price deal post and scheduled it for the early afternoon. I renewed for a year at the bargain rate.
* Went to lunch at 11 a.m. at McDonalds, and was at the library by 11:40 a.m. The CVGS meeting started at 12:15, and was pretty good. Was home by 2:30 p.m.
* Read everything, and wrote Are there standards for names in family trees? This came about from my question yesterday that Russ kindly commented on in email.
* Time for the Padres game, so went in and saw the 5-run first inning that led to a 7-1 win. Napped during the second and third innings! We had dinner, I washed dishes and put out the trash, and was back online at 7 p.m.
* Read a lot of stuff, checked Facebook, Twitter, and did a little Ancestry searching for a post tomorrow. Wrote Gaslamp Quarter History meeting summary about the CVGS program, and then wrote this post.
Genealogy today was 9.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading email, blogs and Twitter, 0.5 hour on Facebook, 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 2.5 hours at the CVGS meeting, 1.0 hour on ancestry doing research, and 1.0 hour reading stuff. Probably shoulda worked in the database...

Genealogy Journal - 28 July 2009
I felt like I got very little done today - until I wrote down everything below!
* Read email, blogs and Twitter, thought about what to blog about, and finally decided on LiveRoots, so I wrote Project Management at LiveRoots.com - Post 1, based on what I had collected three weeks ago. This seems to work pretty well and easy to use. Need to practice what I preach!
* Downloaded and read the new Internet Genealogy magazine. Wrote Internet Genealogy Magazine - August/September 2009 Issue and scheduled it for early afternoon.
* Had lunch at home. Worked in LiveRoots project managment system for awhile - added more items to the personal library and a to-do list. Had a problem and consulted with Illya. There must be a character limit to the comments.
* Transcribed Jeremiah Lanphear Petition into Estate Papers of Jeremiah Lanphear of Wilna NY (died 1862) and scheduled it for later in the afternoon.
* Created an Error List in FTM 16 for my database and started working my way through it. I really need guidance on best practices for second marriages, nicknames, double names, etc. Got through the unknowns, the As and the Bs. I'm finding many unconnected persons...
* At 3:30 p.m., was tired and sleepy so went in to watch news and the Padres game. Had a nap, but woke up with headache - finally gone now. Had dinner,k read the paper, worked in the yard in the cool, Padres won 3-2 over Reds.
* Back on computer at 7:30 p.m., worked in database awhile, read everything, checked Facebook, watched Mark Tucker's presentation, posted Have any Awkward Family Photos? Share Them!, and wrote this post.

Genealogy Journal - 27 July 2009
Today was a busy genealogy day...and I felt real lethargic this afternoon so I didn't post anything.
* Read email, blogs and Twitter, and in the mean time Carlsbad Library Research Trip Summary was posted - I wrote it last night. Researched and wrote my Graveyard Rabbit Journal column - should post on Thursday. Got cleaned up.
* Worked on Tracking Torger in the Census Records and set it to post around noontime. Ate lunch at home.
* Off to CV library at 11:15 for Table Talk and to work on queries. Found one obituary easily in the newspaper. Worked on the City Directories query for almost two hours. Talked to the folks too. Was home by 2 p.m.
* Read everything, did more census work on Linda's folks. Went in at 4 p.m. to watch the Padres game.
* Read the paper, took a nap, watched the game, ate dinner, watered the back yard and front plants, washed the dishes, and came back to computer at 7 p.m.
* Worked through some of the copies I made at Carlsbad on Saturday. Put some data in the database, but much of it is worse than what I have. Oh well. Read everything again, checked in on Facebook and GenWise, and wrote this post.
Genealogy today was 8.5 hours - 1.5 hours reading email, blogs, Twitter, GenWise and Facebook, 1.0 hours writing blog posts, 1.5 hour writing my GYRJ column, 2.5 hours on CVGS queries, and 2.0 hours on database work.

Genealogy Journal - 26 July 2009
It was a pretty typical Sunday in the Genea-Cave - but there was no Scanfest...I missed chatting with my geneabloggerbuds.
* Read email and blogs before going off to church for the 8:30 service. Was home by 10 a.m.
* Wrote Best of the Genea-Blogs and then went in to watch the Padres game. Had lunch, read the paper, and came back after the game to check GenWise, Twitter and Facebook.
* We left at 2 p.m. for the ice cream social and choir sing-along program at church, were home by 4:15. Great 3-scoops of ice cream with toppings.
* Found several more census records for Linda's ancestral families and added them to the database and saving the image to the computer.
* Dinner was at 6, we ate out on the patio in the cool shade - temp was probably 75 F by then, very pleasant!
* Back online at 7 p.m., did more census work and added to database. Wrote San Diego Gaslamp Quarter Program on Wednesday, 29 July and sent emails to the CVGS email list about the program. Helped friend with Facebook details of how to make a Note. Wrote a post about the Carlsbad research trip to post on Monday morning. Then this post, and I'm done.

Genealogy Journal - 25 July 2009
It was not my typical genealogy day - more research than reading and blogging...kinda neat!
* Up early, got cleaned up and out the door by 6:50 a.m., but not before I read my email and blogs.
* Breakfast at Carrows with Linda's swim club, then was at the parking garage at 8:30 a.m. waiting for CVGS trip folks. Blogger posted Using GenealogyBank - Post 5: Using Keyword Searches while I was eating.
* Left parking garage at 9:05 - 8 people in 3 cars - got to Carlsbad Library by 9:40. Researched until 2, taking a lunch break. Headed home, got home at 3:15 p.m. In the meantime, Blogger kindly posted Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Good Genealogy Luck for me! When I got home, I tweeted it.
* Read email, blogs, Twitter and GenWise, but sleepy so went in to have a nap and watch Padres game. Rain in the 2nd inning. Had dinner, game still rain delayed, back to computer at 7 p.m.
* Decided to collect census records for Linda's Leland/Sjurson/Torgerson and Netwig/Erikson Norwegian families. Found almost all of them, captured images, put them in notes in the database, and will use them as blog fodder soon.
* Wrote this post. Will check in on Facebook too. Need to go watch end of Padres game - they were playing last time I checked.

And a fun genealogy day was had by me...lots of variety today!
* On computer by 8 a.m., read email, blogs and Twitter, then worked in RootsMagic for an hour before posting Fact Lists in RootsMagic 4.
* Was reading Twitter and noted that Terry Thornton's Hill Country Blog is Back! way cool!!! Read Genwise and Facebook too.
* Went off to the bank and McDonalds for lunch - no walk today because George was not in the office.
* Wrote a GenealogyBank post for Saturday morning. Checked into some of the family tree sites - Dynastree, Ancestral Atlas and GeneaNet. Answered some email - made several genealogy reports to send to correspondents.
* Watched the two new RootsTV Jamboree interviews, and listened to Lisa's podcast with footnoteMaven. Blogged about the latter in footnoteMaven talks about genealogy blogging. Good work!
* At 5 p.m., went in to watch TV, have dinner, then do chores, water front plants, sweep floor, take out trash, swat flies, organize garage rack, while waiting for Linda to finish her email task.
* Back online at 7:30 p.m., read everything. Tried to eliminate non-functional blogs from Bloglines - found several and dumped them. Found some interesting ones too! Wrote SNGF post for Saturday. Worked in my FTM 16 big database on sources - did the Newton families and the John Seaver family tonight.
* Posted Interesting Maps after discovering site...then wrote this post.

An interesting genealogy software day - and some fun with 15-month old Audrey as they dropped in for a five hour babysitting exercise!
* Read email, blogs, Twitter and Genwise before posting Comparing Genealogy Software - FTM 2009 Data - Part 1 and Comparing Genealogy Software - FTM 2009 Data - Part 2.
* Created GEDCOM file and uploaded to Legacy and to RootsMagic, plus the native FTM 16 file to RootsMagic and captured statistics. Had lunch...
* Tami came at 12:45 with the kids - I babysat Audrey until 5:30 when they came back from the Knotts Soak city water park. Played with Audrey until she took a two hour nap at 3, so I read everything before the Padres game at 4 started.
* Audrey up at 5 p.m., then Tami came home and we all went out to dinner at Lolita's for Mexican food. Tami took girls to friends house for the night.
* Home just before 7 p.m. and got online for my TGSG chat about the NGSQ article.
* At 8:10 p.m., came back and read everything, then rearranged my genealogy database files a bit. Deleted redundant FTM files, got all databases into appropriate folders in the Genealogy Software folder, and reorganized the education files a bit.
* Deleted June genealogy files from flash drive and copied today's genealogy files to flash drive as the "in-my-pocket-all-the-time" backup. Will backup everything at end of the month.
* Checked Twitter, GenWise and Facebook and wrote this post. Done for the night!

Genealogy Journal - 22 July 2009
Stayed home all day, the stove repair guy came at 11 a.m., diagnosed the problem, ordered a part, will come back next week and install it, and took a check for the service call. Nice work if you can get it! Spent most of the day online.
* Read email, blogs, Twitter, and GenWise before creating JPG photos from some Scanfest TIFs. Posted Family Photographs - Post 65: Betty's Trike. Wrote Starting your Family Tree - Three Views after hearing from Bob on Twitter.
* Worked on Estate Papers of Isaac Lanfear - died 1851 in Jefferson County NY and transcribed 3-page letter into Blogger, and scheduled it for early PM. Then the repair guy came.
* Worked on some email - captured some census images for a distant Grieser cousin, and added info to my database. Checked for immigration records and vital records for others in that line with no results. Heard from a Ben Kaber relative, so wrote him too.
* Updated my "Books I Want to Read" list in preparation for Carlsbad on Saturday. Went through the last year of NEHGR and NGSQ journals to capture interesting book titles. Printed it all out.
* Got some emails about the FHC microfilm scanning machine, so I wrote Microfilm Scanning at the FHL and FHC to explain them.
* Dinner time - we ate in the back patio and then I watched cousin Obama's presser. Washed the dishes, took out the trash, watered the front plants, swatted flies, etc.
* Back online, read my TGSG assignment for Thursday night, then answered some emails. Checked ancestry new databases - hardly anything useful to me for awhile.
* Imported the big FTM 16 database into FTM 2009 as a native file - took over 24 minutes to import it. Tried to make large wall chart and ahnentafel report but brought FTM 2009 to its knees several times - had to Cancel the task.
* Read everything, then wrote this post, will check GenWise and Facebook, then check my stats and call it a night.

Genealogy today was 10.5 hours - 1.5 hours reading email, blogs and Twitter, 0.5 hour on GW and FB, 3.0 hours researching and writing blog posts, 2.0 hours in FTM 2009, 1.0 hour on Books, 1.0 hour researching for cousin, 1.0 hour writing email, 0.5 hour on TGSG homework.

Genealogy Journal - 21 July 2009
I finally managed to have a research day away from the Genea-Cave. Cool. Linda was gone all day caring for an elderly friend...nice and quiet at home.
* Was on computer by 8 a.m., read email, blogs and Twitter, then posted My Favorite FREE Genealogy Resources. Only one comment here, but several on Facebook where it's cross-posted.
* Got cleaned up, gathered my bookbag and flash drives, and left at 9:45 a.m. for the Family History Center. Worked for two hours straight on Jefferson County Estate Papers, then ordered the Will Index. Was home by 1 p.m. Forgot to stop off at the cemeteries for pictures. Drat... too sunny anyway, I guess.
* Read everything, plus Facebook and GenWise, then posted Using GenealogyBank - Post 4: More Databases.
* Copied all of the captured Estate Paper images from five files onto the hard drive, and renamed all of them, then read them to see if my Devier Lanphear was mentioned. Nope! Drat again. Some good stuff on these families, though! Wrote Finally! A Research Day a bit later to describe the research trip.
* Worked hard on my growing email list. Pared it down quite a bit, and got the Sent list into the file folders too. Posted comments on two of my blog posts hoping that people will see them and respond.
* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV and eat dinner. Back on the computer at 5:45 p.m. to read everything, answer more email, and do a little research to help correspondents. Received five queries this past week about family lines - wonder why all the activity when the info has been on the Internet for years.
* At 7 p.m., went in to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and then my Deaver book. Linda came home really tired, and decided that caregiver work is not for her. Hmm, forgot to read my TGSG article.
* Padres lost 3-2 to Fish, and I took my walk around the block, then came in to read everything and write this post.
Genealogy today was 9.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading email, blogs, Genwise, Facebook and Twitter, 2.0 hours writing blog posts, 4.0 hours working on Lamphear research at FHC and home, 1.5 hours researching and answering emails,

Genealogy Journal - 20 July 2009
Hmmm, 40 years ago tonight we were in our living room at 2119 30th Street watching Armstrong and Aldrin walk on them oon. Shaking our heads with wonder at the tremendous scientific and engineering feat performed to make this happen.
* Was up early and ready for the GE appliance repair guy to come, and he didn't, and he didn't, and the minute I left for the library at 11:15, he did and we missed out. Drat...now Wednesday.
* Read my email, blogs, and Twitter before posting Favorite Free (or Low Cost) Genealogy Resources. Funny -nobody commented on it. Guess I'll write a followup about mine on the morrow.
* Got cleaned up, ready for the repair guy, then wrote We're Related passes 50 Million Milestone, but ... because I needed to get it down in electrons.
* Left at 11:15 for the library for Table Talk and work on two queries. Talked and researched queries - not much luck. Was home by 1:15 p.m.
* Read everything, then wrote Susi Chats about Blogs, and more, which generated all of one comment. Looks like my readers don't really care about these things! Better find something to excite them!
* Made reservations for air travel, car rental and Little Rock hotel room for vacation, including FGS conference. Damn airfare was higher than last week...and damn car rentals add about 40% in fees to basic rental cost.
* Went to the CV Genealogy Cafe blog and wrote CVGS Road Trip - Carlsbad Library on 25 July then emailed it to the society mailing list. Checked on Ancestry new databases, answered several emails, and got sleepy, so went in at 4 for my nap.
* We went to dinner at 5 p.m. at Oggi's - the stove is broken... back home by 6:30 and I spent 40 minutes reading and thinking and checked some Ben Kaber things again. Nothing new, but did receive mail from Iowa today that said he wasn't mentioned in the county history book as a World War II KIA or in the newspaper either. Disappointed, but not surprised.
* Went in at 7:10 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and work through my Deaver novel. Pads lost 3-2 to Florida in a good game.
* Back online at 10:20, read everything, wrote this post and I'm done for the day.
Genealogy today was 7.5 hours - 2.0 hours reading email, blogs, Twitter and Facebook, 3.0 hours writing blog posts, 1.5 hours doing CVGS queries, 0.5 hour on research, 0.5 hour on social networks, 0.5 hour on email.

Not a big genealogy activity day , but not a complete day of rest either. I worked around Real Life.
* Up early, read email before going off to church at 8:15 a.m. Was home by 10 a.m.
* Read email, blogs, Twitter and GenWise, then wrote Best of the Genea-Blogs post. Tweeted it at 12 noon, had lunch.
* Settled in to watch the Padres game at 1 p.m., read the paper, had a one hour nap, Pads lost 6-1. Argghh.
* Back on computer at 3:45, answered several emails. We left for dinner at Panera Bread at 5 p.m., stopped at ColdStone for ice cream, and were home by 6:30.
* Read everything, wrote "FamilySearch - The Old, The New, The Future" with Ann Montgomery about CGSSD meeting on Saturday. Checked out Ancestry Magazine articles online, then read Miriam's Forum post on GenWise about Free genealogy sites -wrote a blog post for Monday morning publication.
* Took my walk around the block, then wrote this post. Gonna go read my new Jeffery Deaver novel...
Genealogy today was 6.0 hours - 2.0 hours reading email, blogs, Facebook, Twitter and GenWise, 3.0 hours writing blog posts, and 1.0 hour answering email. Not much useful, eh? Except for blogging, of course!

Genealogy Journal - 18 July 2009
It was a busy day that ended with a rare event - the Padres won a game...
* Up early, and on computer by 7:15 reading email, blogs and Twitter. Got cleaned up, and posted Not-So-Top-Secret FamilySearch Project. The stove repair guy called at 8:10 saying he'd be here in 30 minutes - we wanted him in the afternoon. Oh well - cancelled for today.
* Left at 8:15 a.m. with the laptop for the CGSSD meeting in La Jolla. Got there with 5 minutes to spare, unpacked laptop, connected to Internet and projector and did the RootsMagic class with about 15 there. Mainly Q&A - lots of good questions, some I couldn't answer - told them to email Bruce.
* At 10, packed up, and handed out the speaker notes to folks coming in the room. At 10:30, Ann Montgomery gave a good talk on "FamilySearch - Old, New and Future." I will post about it Sunday.
* Program was over at noon, so was home by 12:45 p.m. Got lunch, then read everything and pondered what to do for SNGF. Wandered through RM4 looking for fun software things - I really should plan these things better. Thought about Google Maps too - the Street View thing. Maybe later.
* Finally decided on Saturday Day Night Genealogy Fun (?) - Google Yourself. Maybe it will work, maybe not! Forgot to tweet about it until later.
* Worked on several email responses, then did some database source work, but got sleepy and went in at 4:30 for my nap. We went to Rubio's at 5:15 for dinner, and were home by 6. Had a minor kitchen emergency with rotting potatoes in a cabinet... just lovely! The source of the flies?
* Read everything before 7, did some homework for Linda, and then watched Padres game until 10 p.m.
* At 10, read everything, and wrote this post.
Genealogy today was 8.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading, 1.5 hour writing blog posts, 1.0 hour doing email, 1.0 hour in FTM 16, and 3.0 hours at CGSSD meeting.

Genealogy Journal - 17 July 2009
A pretty good genealogy day...no research breakthroughs, but got my FTM database cleaned up a bit, and found more Seaver stories on genealogyBank. Wish I could find Devier Smith, Thomas J. Newton and William Knapp stories!
* On computer by 7:30, read email, blogs, Twitter and Genealogywise, then wandered around GenealogyBank for awhile trying to find more articles about Thomas O. Seaver. Finally posted This wasn't in my database... but it is now!
* Got cleaned up, and posted Gernealogy Wise apology to Terry Thornton. Went off for my walk on the bayfront with George - he's back from his vacation in Crete so we had lots to talk about. Stopped by bank and gas station. Home by 1 p.m.
* Posted correction to GW post, then worked in my database for awhile. Found out how to combine sources in FTM 16, and converted many "in-place-field" sources to source citations. Still many more to do!
* Captured more screens and wrote Using GenealogyBank - Post 3: More Navigation Options as I work through GenealogyBank. I'm not sure if anybody else has gone through it this way before. It may be fodder for a presentation sometime.
* At 5 p.m., went in to watch TV, read paper, take nap, have dinner, swat flies, water front flowers, and watch the Padres game. Got the laptop out and reviewed some RootsMagic things and some new FamilySearch things in prep for the CGSSD meeting. The Rockies beat my Pads 5-3 - drat!
* Back online at 10 p.m. to read everything and write this post.
Genealogy today was 8.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading everything, 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 1.0 hour in GenealogyBank, 3.0 hours working in my database.

Genealogy Journal - 16 July 2009
It was not a very good genealogy day...too much "real life" interference... and the Genealogy Wise chronicles.
* Actually slept in until 7:15, but was online by 8 a.m. and read email, blogs and Twitter. Tried Genealogy wise and it was really slow and/or non-responsive. Found out later that there was a DNS problem. Posted CGSSD Meeting on Saturday - Ann Montgomery on "FamilySearch" before getting cleaned up and ready for the day.
* Put Using GenealogyBank - Post 2: Seeing Search Results and scheduled it for later in the morning. Did some more GenealogyBank searching and then went off to lunch with my engineers retiree group at 11 a.m.
* Home by 12:45 p.m., and found the storm over censorship at Genealogy Wise. Too late to participate in it, could only commiserate. Read everything I could, and posted on GW About the modified contest, and they later took it all the way down - the right thing to do.
* Linda came home from Tami's house, and I helped unload shopping stuff and with the wash. Took a nap at 3:30 p.m. while she did her email.
* At 4:15 p.m., came in and watched the Genealogy Gems video with Thomas MacEntee. A great job by Thomas explaining his blogging prowess and Lisa in interviewing. Posted Thomas MacEntee's 15 minutes of fame.
* We left at 5 p.m. for the Padres game - ate dinner at The Tin Fish downtown listening to Joe Rathburn's music. Had fun singing along with "Put Me in Coach" and "Take me out to the Ballgame." Then to the game with great hopes - crushed by the Rockies 10-1. We left after 6 innings and were home by 9:50.
* Watched the end of the game, swatted flies, and came online to read everything and write this post.
Genealogy today was 7.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading email and blogs, 0.5 hour on Genealogy Wise, 1.0 hour on Twitter and Facebook, 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 1.0 hour on Genealogy Bank, and 0.5 hour watching GG video.

Genealogy Journal - 15 July 2009
Just another day here in the Genea-Cave, although I did venture out to the library for the CVGS Computer Group meeting today.
* On computer before 8 a.m., read email, blogs and Twitter, checked GenealogyWise too, and read some of the new NEHG Register. Posted Goodbye FamilyHistoryLink.com and Family Photographs - Post 64: Betty and her dog before getting cleaned up. Wrote Using GenealogyBank - Post 1: Getting Started (and scheduled it for the afternoon) before having lunch, and getting ready to go to the library.
* Left for the library at 11:40 a.m., attended Computer Group meeting, and found some interesting data in the FamilySearch Record Search database for Mass deaths. Checked another Deaver book out for pleasure reading, and was home by 2 p.m.
* Read everything, then worked in the NEHGS site for 1911-1915 Seaver births and 1911 Seaver marriages - put info into the database. Decided against going through the info on the FSRS site for now. Did some database cleanup work too.
* Went in at 5:15 to watch TV, eat dinner, swat flies and was back online by 6:30. Worked for awhile in We're Related - it still sucks, and doesn't even offer a GEDCOM upload now after all these months. Checked Facebook too.
* Wrote Putting it all together - finally! about the big database, then wrote Computer Group Summary - 15 July 2009 before writing this post. So that's six genealogy blog posts today - not close to a record!
Genealogy today was 11.0 hours - 2.0 hours reading, 3.0 hours writing blog posts, 0.5 hour reading new NEHGR, 2.5 hours working in database, 1.0 hour on Facebook/We're Related, and 2.0 hours at CVGS meeting.

Genealogy Journal - 14 July 2009
Hard to believe that July is almost half over! It seems like just yesterday we got back from Jamboree, and now we're only 6 weeks away from leaving on vacation. We can hardly wait, but have Grandpa Camp for Lucas to survive first!
* On computer by 7:45, checked email, blogs and Twitter. Got cleaned up, swatted some flies, and wrote Lazy, Crazy, Hazy Days of Summer ... Our 1950's Vacations then Book Review: Crash Course in Family History by Paul Larsen, which I finished yesterday. I think that mine is the first review published.
* Had lunch (veggie beef soup, apple, choc pudding, cookies) and swatted flies...then decided to combine my Seaver, Buck, Vaux and Dill genealogy databases into my Master database so I can access all of it at once. Spent a lot of time merging spouses and removing duplicate Facts and Notes after it was done. Where did the time go?
* Went in at 5:15 to watch All-Star Game, ate dinner (Dinty Moore Stew and ice cream bar), and came into Genea-Cave at 7:15 to check email and GenealogyWise. Found someone had copied 80% of my book review post on GW on his own blog without any attribution. Complained and he fixed it, but I wrote a GW blog post anyway - Please avoid copyright and fair use abuses.
* Watched the end of the All-Star Game - then back online and wrote Genealogy Wise - One Week Later. Checked in on Facebook and then wrote this post.
Genealogy today was 10.5 hours - 2.0 hours reading everything, 2.5 hours writing blog posts, 5.0 hours working in FTM 16 merging 5 databases, and 1.0 hour on GenealogyWise.

Genealogy Journal - 13 July 2009
It was a say-at-home day - but with Linda's social group in the morning and the Home Run Derby in the evening it was semi-eventful.
* Up early to help Linda get the house organized for her group - vacuumed the floors, got umbrella up in back, set up tables and chairs, then they came at 9:30 and left at 12 noon. Linda drove off to Tami's for the week at 12:30, leaving me alone and quite happy to have four days to myself, and the fruit flies, which I've been ordered to eradicate.
* Read email, blogs and Twitter, then posted GenSeekers Announced and GenSeek.com Delayed - funny that no one else has picked up on this but Eastman and DearMYRT. Also funny that no one else has blogged about FTM 2010 features, not even Ancestry.com.
* Edited Edward Alonzo Seaver database information, created a genealogy report and posted Mystery Monday: Edward Alonzo Seaver (1845-1920). Had lunch from leftovers...
* Worked in FTM 2009 adding media items, then uploaded a new tree to Ancestry Member Trees, and wrote about it in Uploading a FTM 2009 Database with Attached Media to Ancestry.com. Also edited the earlier post Family Tree Maker 2010 software - what? when? to get the synchronization details between Ancestry.com and FTM 2010 right.
* Explored Ancestry trees some more to try to understand the owner/editor/contributor/guest issues. Got sleepy - went in for a nap at 4:30 p.m.
* Had dinner (leftover pizza), watched Home Run Derby, and read the genealogy book I've been wanting to finish. Did it, and will review it soon.
* Back online at 9 p.m., read everything, answered some email, and wrote GeneaBloggers Members Google Search Tool and tweeted about it too. Then this post, and I'm done for the night.
Genealogy today was 8.0 hours - 2.0 hours reading everything, 3.0 hours researching and writing blog posts, 1.0 hour working on email, 2.0 hours working in Ancestry/FTM 2009 trees.

Genealogy Journal - 12 July 2009
It wasn't supposed to be a major genealogy day, but that's not how it turned out. Funny how things happen!
* On computer by 7:30 a.m. to read everything, then got cleaned up and went to 8:30 church service. Home by 10 a.m.
* Read everything again, and posted CVGS Surname List and Ahnentafel Collection, then worked on Best of the Genea-Blogs post. Finally finished it at 1 p.m.
* Had lunch at home, then watched Padres game, had a nap, read the paper, swatted some flies, and dozed some more.
* Back online at 4 p.m. reading and tweeting, then attacked some email, and posted several items to Randy's Busy Life from my email.
* Dinner out on the patio in the shade, pulled weeds, swept patio, mowed front lawn, watered front lawn and plants, swiftered the kitchen, and swatted more flies.
* Back online at 7:15, found article on GenealogyBank and posted "A Much Married Man in Trouble..." Checked GB for more articles about Edward A. Seaver and didn't find any. Not on Ancestry either. Checked 100 articles on GB and found some data to put in Seaver database.
* Looked at hotel, airline and car rental options for our trip to KS/MO/AR/TN/MS in late August/early September. Found $89 each way SD ==> KC for each person. Decided on Doubletree Hotel instead of Peabody in Little Rock for FGS conference. Checking on availability of friends in four places...
* Read everything, checked Facebook, took a walk in the cool, and wrote this post. I'm done.
Genealogy today was 7.5 hours - 1.5 hours reading everything, 3.0 hours writing blog posts, 1.5 hours on GenBank, and 1.5 hours planning genealogy vacation.

Genealogy Journal - 11 July 2009
It was a decent genealogy day...but the Padres lost again.
* Up early, on the computer by 7:15 reading email, blogs and Twitter, then posted Is there a Smooth Talking Gene? after finding article in a Google Alert. I love well done humor and satire - it was almost believable to a non-genie.
* Got cleaned up, and came back to schedule Historical Record Source Citations imported from Ancestry.com for later in the morning (written last night). Then wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun piece and scheduled it for the early afternoon.
* Left at 9:30 a.m. for the SDGS meeting with my laptop. Pam asked me to lead the RootsMagic group but Phyllis did it. There was no projector, so we just talked about RM4 and showed a few screens to the persons near us. This group needs a projector! There were about 10 in attendance.
* At 11:30 a.m., I went down to the main room and checked out the book auction offerings. I bought 4 things from the "set price" tables before the luncheon. Ate lunch with Pam and Gene, Dona, Jayne and Chris (the latter two are in Pam's beginners class). Had great table conversation - Jayne picked everyone's brains about many subjects.
* The book auction was pretty boring. Peter Steelquist tried hard to encourage bidding, but the books offered were not especially attractive. Not enough general interest books, and too many really specialized books. Too bad. I left at 1:30 p.m. and was home by 2 p.m.
* Read everything, tweeted about SNGF, and went in to take a nap. Back online at 4 p.m., read more, typed up some stuff for Linda, and decided to write Family Tree Maker 2010 software - what? when?
* Went in to help clear off the patio table for dinner - first time out there this summer. Ate dinner, came in to watch the Padres-Giants game, read my James Patterson novel. Good game, 2-1, but we lost again (7 straight, digging deeper into last place).
* Back to the computer at 9 p.m., read everything, then wrote CVGS Research Group Summary - 8 July 2009 and CVGS Member Ahnentafels on the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog. Then wrote this post, and I'll go read Facebook and GenWise before I head off to bed.
Genealogy today was 9.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading, 3.0 hours writing 7 blog posts, 3.5 hours at SDGS meeting, and 1.0 hour in FTM.

Genealogy Journal - 9-10 July 2009
The granddaughters went home this morning, but that didn't keep me from doing al ittle blogging yesterday and some useful research today.
On Thursday, 9 July:
* Spent most of the morning taking care of Audrey and Lauren, but managed to sneak in reading email, blogs and Twitter in between breakfast, changes and playing. The CVGS Research Group Summary - 8 July 2009 post published this morning even though I wrote it Wednesday night.
* We all went off to El Pollo Loco for lunch and took itto the bayside park to eat in the shade and then the girls played on the playground. We were home by 12:15, and the girls took naps.
* I had some time to put together Exporting a Tree from Ancestry.com and then tried to take a nap too! Succeeded!
* Checked in on email, Twitter, blogs, Facebook and GenealogyWise during the afternoon, but did nothing useful besides play with the girls. We went out to Chick-Fil-A for dinner and the girlsp layed in the play area. We were home by 6:45, and I got them into the bath and in PJs, and Audrey went down at 7:15. Watched the Padres game...a wipeout by Giants, 9-3.
* At 8 p.m., participated in the monthly ProGen chat, which lasted over an hor. Lauren was still awake until 10 p.m.
Genealogy today was 4.0 hours - 2.0 hours reading everything, 1.0 hour writing blog posts, 1.0 hour on ProGen chat.
On Friday, 10 July:
* Linda off early for hair appointment, swimming and lunch, so I got breakfast and packing duty for the girls. Did it efficiently and with happiness all around. Michelle came at 9 a.m. to take them to meet Tami, and I settled in for a long day of genealogy.
* Read everything, and pondered what to write for the Smile carnival about "They Worked Hard for their Money." Decided on Isaac Seaver the blacksmith but couldn't find a good freely available picture that I liked and ended up not doing the post. Finally wrote Working in RootsMagic 4 - Post 26: Importing a GEDCOM File because of comments from a previous post. Worked in RM4 for awhile trying to sort everything out.
* Got cleaned up, had lunch, went to bank, and home by 1 p.m. Read email, blogs, Twitter, Facebook and GenWise, then wrote Exporting Family Trees.
* Signed up for free 7 day trial on GenealogyBank, and worked in it searching for elusive ancestors and others too. Some quirks in the search process - I'll write about it later.
* We went to Oggi's for dinner at 4:45, and were home by 6:15, but Linda used the computer until 7. The Padres-Giants game started at 7:15, and the Padres were no-hit by Jonathan Sanchez. I watched most of it - got the laptop updated, updated RootsMagic 4 on it, and saved some screens for the SDGS RM4 class on Saturday morning.
* On the desktop by 9:30, read everything then wrote this post. Will write a post for Saturday morning and try to think of an SNGF topic for Saturday afternoon.
Genealogy today was 8.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading everything, 2.0 hours researching and writing blog posts, 2.5 hours on GenealogyBank, 1.0 hour in RootsMagic, and 1.0 hour working on the laptop.

Genealogy Journal - 8 July 2009
A pretty good genealogy day, then SURPRISE - we need to be grandparents for two days!
* Online at 7:45, read email, blogs and Twitter, and checked on GenWise. Posted SDGS Meeting on 11 July - Annual Book Auction and Potluck Luncheon and then Family Photographs - Post 63: Betty and the Balloon (not a Squash) (I changed the title after everyone pointed out the tie on the balloon).
* Checked in on Ancestry.com new databases, then my Member Tree. I wanted to see how the source citations of historical records came across from Ancestry in a GEDCOM file, so I added several census records then exported the GEDCOM, and imported it into FTM 2009, RootsMagic 4 and Legacy 7. The end result looks pretty much the same - really poor citations!
* Got cleaned up and left at 11:20 for lunch at McDonalds then to the library for the CVGS Research Group. Group was done by 2, and I was home by 2:30.
* Tami called this morning to see if we would watch the girls for one day...by the time I got home it was for two days, and here they were. I kept Audrey busy while Linda took Lolo off to swim at our friends pool. I dozed in the chair and entertained Audrey (and vice versa) until they came home at 5:15.
* We went out to Rubio's for dinner and were back by 6:45. Gave both girls a bath, a snack, a kiss and off to bed. Easy tonight!
* Back online at 8 p.m., I read everything, spent awhile on GenWise, then wrote GenealogyWise Update. Then this post and I'm going to turn in early I think. Or play on Genwise for awhile.
Genealogy today was 7.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading everything, 1.0 hour on GenWise, 1.5 hours writing blog posts, 1.0 hour on Ancestry export/software imports, and 2.0 hours on CVGS Research Group.

Genealogy Journal - 7 July 2009
Just another day in genea-blog-land...reading, blogging, testing,...oh, the dentist too.
* On computer by 8 a.m., read email, Twitter and blog posts on Bloglines, then wondered what to blog about. Saw message on the TGF list so wrote Study Program for Genealogists. Researched and answered question from Rhonda about FTM 16's locality lists.
* Off to the dentist at 9:40 a.m. for routine cleaning. I hate this but it has to be done. My teeth and gums are plaque machines. Home by 11:30.
* Read everything, had lunch, and watched the RootsTV videos and listened to the GenGuys and Lisa Cooke's podcasts. Wrote More SCGS Genealogy Jamboree Audio/Video.
* Checked out Source Lists on FTM16 to see if I can easily find the Facts for which I have a Source but not a Page Number in the Source. Umm, not readily apparent. Drat. FTM 2009 can do it easily, though. But I'm still working in FTM16 on my source citations.
* Went in at 3 p.m. for TV, read the paper, and a nap, and was back online at 4:15. Saw that FamilyLink had emailed about GenealogyWise so I signed up, captured some screens and wrote Genealogywise = Facebook for Genealogists. Tweeted about it, and lotsa folks signed up - some are my Friends!
* Went in at 5:30 to swat flies and watch TV, then dinner, and Padres game came on at 6:40. Snakes won 4-3...drat! Finished Deaver novel, started Paul Larsen's Genealogy book.
* Back online at 9:45, read everything, checked Facebook, wrote this post, done for the night.
Genealogy today was 6.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading, 1.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 1.5 hours doing video and audio, 1.0 hour in FTM software, and 0.5 hour in GenealogyWise.

Genealogy Journal - 6 July 2009
Some blogging, some database sourcing, some library work, some video watching...not a bad genealogy day! It's nice not to have a deadline to work under this week.
* On computer by 8 a.m., read everything, and saw the Ancestry.com aannouncement, so posted TGN ==> Ancestry.com: Ho hum before everybody else did. Caught some folks by surprise, but not me - I mentioned it at the SCGS Jamboree!
* Checked Lisa's Genealogy Gems TV site and the video was there, but she still hasn't released the podcast announcement so I'll wait patiently... frankly, me and patience are not a good mix! Wrote a blog post for it in anticipation of Lisa's posting.
* Worked in my database for awhile - first searching for more dates/places to source, then improving the source citations for about 20 Mass VR books. I wonder how many more I have to do? Need to source many more facts too, and find page numbers for many of the VR citations.
* Had lunch, got cleaned up, then off to library at 11:45 a.m. for table talk with John and Dearl, then did two obituary lookups. Was home by 1:15 p.m. ready for my nap!
* Lisa posted on Facebook on Saturday night about the video (how did I miss that? I was checking all weekend). Hmm, so I went ahead and posted My Interview with Lisa Louise Cooke at Jamboree. And tweeted about it. Edited it once after Lisa helped me with the embedding of the video. Hope everyone liked it...
* Wrote New Look for Ancestry.com Family Trees - Post 2 and scheduled it for later in the afternoon. Are Ancestry Member Trees ready for the Genealogy Cloud? I'll answer that soon!
* Worked a bit in the Live Roots Project Management area - pretty good system there. Will blog about it soon.
* Dozed off at my keyboard reading blog posts, so figured it was time to take my nap, watch TV, read the paper, and we had dinner. Watered front plants and back yard, then Padres came was on. Finished Lisa's Genealogy Gems book during the game, which we lost 6-5 in the 9th inning.
* To the computer, read everything, wrote this post, and I'm done for the night!
Genealogy today was 8.5 hours - 1.5 hours reading everything, 2.5 hours writing blog posts, 1.5 hours at CVGS and library, 0.5 hour watching videos, 1.0 hour in Live Roots, and 1.5 hours in database.

Genealogy Journal - 4-5 July 2009
Was too tired last night to post my Journal...and not too much genealogy work yesterday or today.
Saturday, 4 July:
* Read everything posted Happy Fourth of July and My Revolutionary Roots, then wrote the Saturday Night Genealogy Fun post to publish in the afternoon.
* Finished the CVGS newsletter - added the meeting minutes and two small articles. Proofed it, looks good!
* We left at 11 a.m. for the Padres-Dodgers game. Took the trolley, and were going to meet Tami and family outside the gate. Waited until 1:15 p.m. when they said they couldn't find a parking place and were going to our house to rest. Padres won 7-4, but we didn't get home until 5:15.
* Got home and they were there, ready to go to church for the picnic and fireworks watching. Had a good time, home by 9:15 p.m. Spent the rest of evening reading and talking. Girls went to bed easily!
Genealogy today was 3.0 hours - 1.0 hours reading everything, 1.0 hours writing blog posts, and 1.0 hour on CVGS newsletter.
Sunday - 5 July:
* Read everything, made black-and-white copy of CVGS newsletter, made a PDF of color version, made labels for mailing newsletter.
* Off to church at 9:40, home by 11:40 a.m. Gathered stuff and went to UPS Store for newsletter publishing - done in 15 minutes! Home by 12:20.
* Had lunch, started on Best of the Genea-Blogs post. Finished by 2 p.m., so went in to watch Padres-Dodgers game, had a short nap, boring game until the 9th inning. With Pads down 6-1, they tied the game at 6-6, but lost 7-6 in the 13th inning.
* Dinner time, watched 60 Minutes, then came in to read everything and write some CVGS blog posts - Must-Read Blog Posts from June 2009, CVGS bloggers and New and Updated Genealogy Databases - July 2009 . Plus several more to publish in coming days. A blogging fool!
Genealogy today was 5.0 hours - 1.5 hours reading everything, 2.5 hours writing blog posts, 1.0 hour on CVGS newsletter.

Genealogy Journal - 3 July 2009
Another stay-at-home until dinner day...library was closed for the holiday, FHC too, so I worked a bit and played a bit.
* Read email, blogs and Twitter then posted Facebook/Twitter Meetup at SCGS Jamboree and wondered what else I could blog about. something will come up!
* Added the Presidents report to the CVGS newsletter, did more editing and fact checking - now all I need is the meeting minutes and I can wrap that puppy up.
* Downloaded some RevWar Pension Files for a friend, then checked Footnote, WVR and Rootsweb for info on Ben Kaber. Nada!
* Ate lunch at home. Decided to look for published information for my Plimpton ancestor line in Medfield MA - found a book online and copy/pasted text into my notes. Had to edit everything too, but got good info on four generations. Cited it too. Now I need to go find the deeds and probate records in the County records.
* Read the A.com blog about the New Look for Family Trees and went into my AMT to get screen shots and wrote the post New Look for Ancestry.com Family Trees - Post 1.
* Dinner time - we went to Daphne's and Linda found out that the sauce had soy in it, had a reaction. so we skipped the Cold Stone treat and stopped at the store and were home by 6:45. I watered the front plants and back yard.
* Padres game was terrible - Dodgers got 5 in the first inning and won 6-3. I read my book and checked email/blogs twice during the game, and watched one of Lisa's videos.
* After the game, read everything and wrote this post. Can't think of a daily 3 to post either - gotta get with that again.
Genealogy today was 10.5 hours - 2.0 hours reading everything, 2.0 hours writing blog posts, 2.0 hours on Footnote and WVR, 1.0 hour on Ancestry, 1.0 hour on CVGS newsletter, 2.0 hours in database working on Plimptons, and 0.5 hour watching videos.

Genealogy Journal - 2 July 2009
This was the day I had set aside to work on the July CVGS newsletter and I got quite a bit done. I also blogged, of course, and even explored some online family tree programs.
* On computer before 8 a.m., read email, blogs and Twitter before posting Checking out the SCGS Jamboree Exhibits - Post 2 and Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - July 2009.
* Decided to add thumbnail and some family photos to FTM 16 database and to the same FTM 2009 database just to see how easy it is. Both were easy...although the FTM16 images were stored within the database itself, while the FTM2009 images were put in a separate file folder. Then created a GEDCOM of FTM 2009 database and uploaded to Ancestry.com Member Trees. The images did not come into the Ancestry Member Tree as I hoped they would. Messed around in my Member Tree.
* Got cleaned up, had lunch, and posted What really happened at Jamboree? Elizabeth tells all! Great work by Elizabeth! Updated California Assembly Bill AB130 - IAJGS Letter post.
* Started on CVGS newsletter. Found the master format, but it needs modification. Got upcoming program, past program, research group, computer news, local programs, and several articles into the 10 pages. Needs Presidents report and minutes of the meetings and it's pretty much done as long as it all fits!
* At 5:30, went in to watch TV, and Linda came home from Padres game and we went to Lolita's for dinner. Home by 6:30.
* Came in to prepare for ProGen chat at 7, but found out it was at 8. Researched and wrote Online Family Trees - Post 1: What I Want before 8 p.m. chat.
* Chat started with four of us, but not Sheri and Jeff. Decided to postpone so that they could participate next week or another week. What to do? Read everything, plus Facebook, and explored Family Pursuit where I had uploaded my Seaver file two years ago.
* Wrote this post and will go to bed early tonight, I think. Tami and the family may come tomorrow - gotta get my grandpa face ready!
Genealogy today was 11.0 hours - 2.0 hours reading everything, 2.5 hours writing blog posts, 1.0 hour in FTM databases, 1.0 hour in Ancestry, 0.5 hour in Family Pursuit, 3.5 hours working on CVGS newsletter, and 0.5 hour in ProGen chat.

Genealogy Journal - 1 July 2009
The first day of the rest of 2009...and what did I do? Well, blog of course. Some other genealogy things too, let's see if I can remember everything:
* On computer by 7:45 a.m., read email, blogs and Twitter, the posted Family Photographs - Post 62: Betty and the Chickens and Checking out the SCGS Jamboree Exhibits - Post 1.
* Edited my column down from 1750 words to 1500 words, blessed it, and sent it off to my editor. Will I ever be succinct in my writing? Probably not - still too much of an engineer.
* Looked at new Footnote.com pages and posted Check out the HistoryBeat pages from Footnote.com. Looked at the newspapers too - didn't find my Knapps in Poughkeepsie paper but I tried!
* Got cleaned up, and went to lunch at McDonald's and then to library for CVGS Board meeting. Was home before 2 p.m.
* After reading everything, worked on my ProGen homework - reviewing, proofreading and editing my colleagues' research reports. Then posted Isaac Buck - Revolutionary War Soldier for the 75th Carnival of Genealogy.
* At 5 p.m., went in to read paper, take a nap, and have dinner. Took out the trash and got 20 minutes reading everything before the Padres game.
* Padres lost 7-1 to Astros, and I read my Jeffery Deaver novel during the game. Over before 10, and came in to read everything and write this post.
Genealogy today was 9.5 hours - 2.0 hours reading, 2.0 hours writing blog posts, 2.0 hours doing ProGen homework, 1.0 hour on column, 0.5 hour on Footnote, and 2.0 hours on CVGS things.
