My genealogy day - 31 January 2013

This was a stay at home, do genealogy type of day, and I actually got some real research done!

*  After reading email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1850 U.S. Census Record for Daniel Spangler Family.  

*  Worked in New York Deeds for Erie County the rest of the morning - found more deeds for Amos Underhill and some for Samuel Vaux.  Captured the images, renamed them, sourced the events, and added to the research logs.  

*  Answered some email, then wrote Watch Out for Dates in Mocavo Trees after cousin Bonnie told me of the problem.  This was fixed pretty quickly by Mocavo and I added to my post.

*  More email came in so I wrote RootsTech 2013 Keynote Speakers Will Be... and   Huntington Beach Genealogy BASH is 2 March 2013 and set it for later.

*  Did some online searching and added events and sources to the database for awhile.

*  Went in for dinner after 5 p.m. to read the paper, eat dinner, watch TV news and wash the dishes.

*  Online again at 6:45 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, and write CVGS Research Group meeting had its picture taken...  Checked Facebook too.

*  Worked in the database adding content and sources - solved several mysteries using AmericanAncestors and Massachusetts VR books online.  Then used the Find A Grave record matches to confirm 16 more matches, adding content and sources.

*  Genealogy today was 11.0 hours.

My genealogy day - 30 January 2013

What, the end of January approaches?  That means ... I need to get out my talks for 2 March and work on them, plus my OASIS talks for March Mondays.  Sometime I need to work on my New England talk and start thinking about the Ancestry Trees talk in July.

*  After reading email and blogs, I posted (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 241: Randy, Stan and Dad in 1948.  It's becoming difficult to find new family pictures to post!  Wrote Watching Find My Past Television episodes and set it for later in the morning.

*  Checked for new databases, and printed off some CVGS surveys.  Computer got slow, so I rebooted it.

*  Left at 11:10 a.m. for McDonalds for lunch, then to the library for the CVGS meeting.  Ate more, talked to Butch and Jean Hibben, listened to Butch's presentation, ate some more, got a book out, and was home by 2:30 p.m.

*  Read everything, got sleepy, almost took a nap, but found some things in GenealogyBank and wrote A Cure for Genea-boredom -- GenealogyBank! instead.  Checked more folks in GenealogyBank!  Answered some email.  Suffered another BSOD...got a computer problem, I fear.

*  Went in at 5:20 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper, put out the trash, get Ruth's mail, eat dinner, wash the dishes and update my iPhone.

*  Online at 7:15 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, then worked in AmericanAncestors and Ancestry adding content and source citations.  Then spent some time with Find A Grave record matches on MyHeritage - down to 725 pending (out of 1341).  Added more content and sources.

*  Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 29 January 2013

Two more days in January - wow!  I see Conference season rushing toward me!

*  After reading emails and blogs, wrote Tuesday's Tip - Attend RootsTech 2013 Conference (Live or Virtually) and then researched and wrote Mining Ancestry.com Records for Persons in Your Ancestry Member Tree.

*  After lunch, worked on the CVGS member survey some more - about 50% finished compiling the results.  

*  Checked out Janet's book bits, and wrote Janet Hovorka's "Zap the Grandma Gap" Book Released.

*  Did random searches for persons in the database, adding content and sources from Ancestry, american Ancestors and FindMyPast.  Checked Facebook.

*  After dinner, watched the Titanic episode of the FindMyPast TV show - great episode.  You have to be a registered and subscriber of FindMyPast to watch Season 1 episodes.

*  Worked in Find A Grave using the MyHeritage Record Matches, did quite a bit.  Found a big set of Collver data in Ontario.

*  Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook,and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 28 January 2013

I've become pretty predictable, haven't I?  I've used the same words and phrases to describe my daily activities almost every day for the past several years.  Does everybody understand what I mean when I say "...going in to eat dinner" or similar?  It's no more than leaving the "Genealogy Cave" (actually a back bedroom) and walking down the hall and turning left into the family room.

*  After reading email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - Martin Carringer's Revolutionary War Pension File: Post 8: 1849 Declaration of Molly Carringer.

*  Tuned into DearMYRTLE's Mondays with Myrt webinar to her Pat, Russ and now Tessa talk about many things which I cannot recall now!  Suffered another Blue Screen of Death episode while listening and websurfing...rebooted.

*  Researched and wrote The Interactive Viewer on Ancestry.com is Great!  I really like it - wonder which databases it's currently used on?

*  After lunch, worked in the database for several hours finding online info to add content and sources to families in the database.  Worked a lot on two Seaver families in Massachusetts, finding death dates and obituaries, and in some cases marriage dates, place and birth dates and places for family members.  Transcribed several obituaries from GenealogyBank too.  

*  Answered some email, and sent the CVGS program announcement to the e-mailing list.  Checked Facebook and Google Plus too.

*  After dinner, went online to write Genealogy Software Versions 10 Years Ago... and then started the CVGS Member Survey tabulation.  Worked in Find A Grave using MyHeritage Record Matches to add content and sources to the database.  It's amazing how many colonial folks are in FAG, and how many recent burials there are too.  

*  Added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 27 January 2013

I didn't do much genealogy today, but did attend Scanfest and did do some data entry/source citing tonight.

*  Read email and blogs, then off to church at 9:30 a.m.  Stayed for the annual meeting, had a good chicken pot pie lunch.

*  Home at 12:30 p.m. to jump into Scanfest on Miriam's blog.  noted that Best of the Genea-Blogs - 20 to 26 January 2013 posted.  Got about 10 loose pictures scanned, plus some documents.  

*  Went in at 2 p.m. to watch the golf tournament, read the paper, and take a short nap.  Back online at 3:30 p.m. to write two CVGS blog posts, then back to watch golf and football Pro Bowl.  Read the paper, we ate dinner too.

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, post "Creating Your Life's Story" at CVGS Meeting on 30 January, and then did some random searching for folks in my database.  Didn't find much for the names I tried.  Went on MyHeritage and did another 20 Find A Grave matches, plus many more that linked to those 20.  Added content and sources.  

*  Started the next Best Of post, and I'm done.  It was a light genealogy day - only 6.0 hours.

My genealogy day - 26 January 2013

It was a rainy and foggy day again, although the rain stopped in the morning.  I stayed home again, as did Linda.  I do feel better than earlier in the week.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - HARTSHORN (England > Medfield, Mass.) posted and wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - The "Other You" and set it for early afternoon.

*  Given the choice of doing random pinball genealogy or working on the check book, or the taxes, or the CVGS survey, what do you think I chose to do?

*  You guessed it - I worked on adding content and sources to my database for the rest of the day (pretty much).  Found lots of info for the 3 Edwin Pliny Seaver guys and their families, and tonight worked out a problem with two Earl Seavers born in 1892 who I had put together as one guy.  Finally figured that out, with the help of census records and WWI and WWII draft registration cards.  Whew!  Used the Vermont BRs a lot also sorting out vital stats.

*  Answered some email, checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post and watched some TV (SDSU beat UNM, golf tournament was delayed due to fog, news) during the day.

My genealogy day - 25 January 2013

This was a rainy day all day, a steady drip.  Went out in it because I had to!  Still feel only fair with sniffles.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Follow-Up Friday - Helpful Reader Comments.

*  Researched and then wrote Using RecordSeek to Add Sources to the FamilySearch Family Tree.  That works pretty well!

*  Answered email, checked Facebook, printed off several queries and left for the bank and library at 1:15 p.m.  The microfilm machine was fixed, so found two of the 3 obituaries I was looking for. The printer wasn't working, so used my iPhone.  

*  Home by 2:30 p.m. to copy photos to the computer, send off one query response, read, then write Review: Legacy QuickGuide on Pennsylvania Genealogy.

*  Worked in the database for awhile, adding content and sources for random persons.

*  Went in at 4:45 p.m. to watch TV news, read the paper, eat dinner, and wash the dishes.  

*  Online again at 7 p.m. to read, answer email, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and check Google+.  Wrote the Surname Saturday post.

*  Worked on finding several Richman families in English census records - some success.  Worked  in the Find A Grave matches on MyHeritage, adding content and sources.  

*  Wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 10.0 hours.

My genealogy day - 24 January 2013

I've finally figured out that I have a cold or a touch of the flu despite the flu shot taken 2 months ago.    My drainage and sniffles are noticeable now.  It was another stay-at-home day doing genealogy for me.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1850 U.S. Census Record for William Knapp Family and then Check Out the Census Dotmap - Can You Find Your House?

*  Tuned into Crista's Ancestry webinar on Facebook about reliable sources, didn't get much out of it.  Added sources and event data for about two inches of "to be filed" paper.  I had entered most of it before.  Lots more to do!  I need to do more of this.

*  Checked out the TreeConnect feature for sources in FS Family Tree.  That works pretty well!

*  Watched Marina Pierre-Louis webinar from last week about On-Site Research.  Pretty good advice.  Checked Facebook.  Answered some email.

*  Wrote Win a FREE Registration to RootsTech (21-23 March 2013).  I must have done something useful, but can't recall what!  Oh - I checked out LibreOffice on the laptop - it reads my OpenOffice presentation files just fine!  Wrote Legacy Family Tree Webinars for 2013 All Set.

*  Went in at 4:45 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV news, eat dinner and wash the dishes.  Took the laptop in to read blogs while Linda was on the desktop.

*  Online at 6:45 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook and do more online searches for Catherine names without a surname.  Found quite a few of them in Ancestry Trees.  Then worked in FindMyPast.com looking for the Richman daughters in the English census records.  

*  Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 23 January 2013

I felt better today after last night's tummy and headache problem...but didn't sleep well due to the meds I took (I think).  Stayed at home all day doing genealogy.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote (Not so) Wordless Wednesday - Post 240: Evelyn and Aunt Emily in 1921 and then worked on and posted Finding the Best Way to Attach Sources to Persons in FamilySearch Family Tree.

*  Kept working with the new laptop, got the second Genealogy folder and the Pictures folder transferred using flash drives.  Almost done.  Not sure if I want to transfer the music or not.  

*  Answered several emails, did some online searching to support several CVGS queries, and wrote "Principles of Pinball Approach to Genealogical Research" Defined and Discussed.

*  Went in at 4:45 p.m. to watch TV news, take a nap, read the paper, eat dinner, put out the trash, and wash the dishes.

*  Online at 7 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and work in the database finding data and sources.  Wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 22 January 2013

It was a stay-at-home day - and finally got into my new laptop computer.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote New Genealogy Show: On-Site Research New England and then researched and wrote on Pinball Genealogy - Enriching My Genealogy Database for two hours.

*  Decided I'd better get the new Dell laptop started up - got it out of the box, plugged in, turned on, Windows 7 up, wifi connected, IE9 opened, Dropbox and Google Drive downloaded, RootsMagic, FTM 2012 and Legacy 7.5 loaded, LibreOffice downloaded, and started copying files on the desktop to USB drives to laptop for the rest of the day, off and on.

*  Worked on the CVGS survey tabulating responses for awhile.

*  Worked in the database off and on...can't recall what I did though!

*  Went in for dinner at 5:30 p.m., read the paper, ate, and back online by 6:30 p.m.

*  Worked in the database adding content randomly, while also working with the laptop.  Got my RootsMagic database loaded, and the media found in the files.  Wrote Source Citation for New Brunswick Land Deed Record, checked Ancestry DNA, checked Facebook, answered some email, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

*  Felt sick to my stomach and headache at 8 p.m., fighting it ever since with cold compresses.  A bug, or food poisoning?  I hate when this happens...

My genealogy day - 21 January 2013

It was a fairly full genealogy day - January is 2/3's over, and I still haven't got the new laptop out yet.  Maybe tomorrow!

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Amanuensis Monday - Martin Carringer's Revolutionary War Pension File: Post 7: Allen Morrison's Declaration.

*  Listened to DearMYRTLE's webinar, didn't get much out of it this week.  It did stimulate me to write Pinball Genealogy - My Ancestry.com Hints Practices.

*  Answered some email, checked for new databases, checked Facebook, and added to the Best Of post. 

*  Left at 1:45 p.m. for John's house for the CVGS Bylaws Review meeting.  Home by 4:45 p.m. to watch news, then ate dinner, read the paper, and did the dishes.

*  Online at 6 p.m. to read, post Denise Levenick's Blog Book Tour Rocks! and do some online research.  First in the CAR surnames using Ancestry, FS and AA, then in Find A Grave using the MyHeritage Record Search list.  Confirmed 24 more, 822 to go!  Added data and osurces to the database.

*  Wrote this post.

My non-genealogy days - 17 to 20 January 2013

Well, I missed journaling for a few days here - I decided to give my readers a break.  Honestly, I was too busy with the grandgirls those days and was only able to do minimal email responses, blog/social reading, and blog postings between grandgirl sessions.  In essence, I did the "usual" blog posts for the daily themes, and that was about it.   I did no actual research or online searching in this time period.

We went and picked them up in Orange County on Tuesday (their mom had surgery on Wednesday) and they left tonight after dinner to go home with their father.  We love having them, but 5 nights is about two too long.  Linda is worn out every night.  They often entertain themselves - singing, dancing, drawing, writing, jumping on the bed, etc.  We went to the zoo on Saturday.  They got music CDs from their mom this week, and played them on my laptop while going to sleep or during play periods.  They got Strawberry Shortcake DVDs also, and played one of them on my computer today.  We helped Lolo with her homework - she had an ancestor report due, so we talked about the country she wanted to do (England), selected Rachel Morley as the target.  I printed out a line of descent from Rachel to Lolo (her mtDNA descent!), we looked stuff up online about English customs, flag, culture, etc., and Lolo wrote her report.

I did watch the 49ers/Falcons game today, and some of the Patriots/Ravens.  James came at 5 p.m. and we went to Lolita's for dinner, then got back just in time to see the end of the Patriots/Ravens game.  I'm happy that it's going to be a Jim vs. John Harbaugh game.  We like the 49ers because of Linda's SF connection.

I was finally able to do something genealogical tonight - I decided on pinball genealogy - find names, dates, places for persons with blank spots in my database.  I enjoy doing this, I can stop when I want to, and I get the feeling of accomplishing something - adding names, dates, places, relationships, sources, notes, etc.

My iPhone camera wouldn't open on Saturday at the Zoo, and I Googled a bit and didn't see an obvious fix.  I posted about it on Facebook, and Lucie said to turn the phone completely off to close all of the apps.  When I turned it back on, I opened the camera and it worked!  Took a few pix this afternoon of the girls.

That's my story and i'm sticking to it, and also going to bed early...loving little girls is hard work!

My genealogy day - 16 January 2013

Another non-genealogy day, with the exception of blogging and the CVGS Computer Group.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 239 - Emily and Dorothy Taylor in 1920 and then CGSSD Meeting on Saturday, 19 January Features Donna Bradley.

*  Had the girls in the morning - we had a tour of the blog on their scooters, and played hide and seek.  Linda took them at 11 a.m. to find fabric for Lolo's Ancestor project, and I went off to lunch at McDonalds, then the bank, the post office (to mail my 23andme sample), and the library.

*  Talked to John and Joanna for awhile, then went to CVGS Computer Group meeting.  Helped Susi with her webinar issues, I think, and her iPad.  Shirley used Rootsweb to show new folks some sites to use.

*  Home by 2 p.m. to read, then took a short nap, and Audrey got up with me, we watched Fox News for an hour while trying to rest.  Linda took the girls to the Y to swim.

*  That gave me some time to research and write Using New Brunswick County Deed Registry Books.

*  They came home after 4 and I played with the girls, we had dinner, watched TV, they had dessert, got into their makeup and had fun being glamorous, then worked on paper airplanes and headbands, and got glitter all over the dining room tablecloth!  Oops.  I watched the SDSU/UNLV game, Aztecs lost.  Finally got them down for bed at 9:30 p.m.

My genealogy day - 15 January 2013

This was not much of a genealogy day because we went and picked up the grandgirls in Huntington Beach for the week.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that "What Do You Do With a Document for a Potential Ancestor?" posted.  Wrote Collaboration at Local Genealogical Society Meetings and set it for later.

*  We left at 10:30 a.m. for Huntington Beach, ate lunch at In 'n' Out, picked up the girls and their stuff and were on the road again by 1:30 p.m.  Tami gave us the three large photos for the entry wall of the grandkids - great images!  

*  Home by 3 p.m. with our precious cargo - 210 miles round trip.  Glad we aren't driving much more this week!  Helped Lolo with her homework - she has an Ancestor Report due next week!  We used Google and Wikipedia to find info about England culture and more.

*  Online off and on until 8:30 p.m. when the girls went to bed.  Answered email, checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, looked at California probates on FamilySearch, and wrote this post.

My genealogy days - 13 and 14 January 2013

We took off for Palm Springs on Sunday morning, and returned home on Monday afternoon.

1)  Sunday, 13 January:

*  Read email and blogs, finished up the Best Of post.  We left at 9 a.m. for Palm Springs and my talk on Monday to the Sun City Palm Springs Genealogy Club.

*  Got to the Palm Springs tram station before 11:45, and took the tram up to the Mountain station.  Had lunch there, then I wandered around outside for awhile in the cold and snow.  Took some pictures.  Found Linda in the Gift Shop.  We were off the mountain and in our motel room by 3 p.m.

*  Checked my email, posted Best of the Genea-Blogs - 6 to 12 January 2013 (it was in Draft, not ready to be published, so late!).  Had a nap, went to dinner, edited my presentation a bit on the laptop.  

2)  Monday, 14 January:

*  Up before 6:30 a.m., checked out, had breakfast, checked email during breakfast, and headed for Palm Desert.  Got to the Del Webb clubhouse before 9 a.m., met Sondra and Gary, and got set up for the talk.  Launched right after 9:30 a.m., and went until after 11:30 a.m.  I gave them more detail than usual.  It was a group of about 30.  

*  We went to lunch at Subway, got gas, and headed home up I-10 to US 60 to State 215 to I-15 to I-805 to home.  Stopped in Menifee for a milk shake at Carl's Jr.  

*  Home by 3:45 p.m., read email and blogs, added to the Best Of post, noted that Amanuensis Monday - Martin Carringer's Revolutionary War Pension File: Post 6: son George's 1851 Declaration posed, and wrote Genealogist Beware - Checking Out Genealogy.us.org.

*  Went in for dinner at 6, watched TV, did the dishes, and back online by 6:45 p.m.  Wrote CVGS Newsletter for January 2013 is Available and CVGS Research Group Summary - 9 January 2013 Meeting.

*  Answered several emails then Updated the Genealogy.us.org post.  Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 12 January 2013

This was a pretty full genealogy day, but I got nothing accomplished in my database... High today 59F, low 41F, but no wind and clear skies - the mountains were out to the east!

*  Up early, read email and blogs, then out at 8 a.m. to go to the SDGS seminar on Mission Bay.

*  Got to the SDGS seminar by 8:30 AM, talked to folks, sat through two David Rencher talks.  Really liked how he engaged the audience in his second talk.  Tweeted a bit during the first talk about FamilySearch.  10 from CVGS were there, 170 total.

*  Lunch was sitting next to David, and lots of folks came by to tell him their Irish problems.

*  The two afternoon talks were good, but I was sleepy...tried to take notes, no tweets.  I didn't win a door prize or the 7-days in SLC, my CVGS colleague and friend PJ won that!

*  Home by 4 p.m. to watch the end of the Broncos/Ravens game.  Noted that Surname Saturday - DRAPER (England > Medfield, Mass.) and Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Semi-Random Research posted.

*  We had dinner watching the 49ers/Packers game.  Came in to finish up the Best Of post for Sunday and the Amanuensis post for Monday while we're off to Palm Springs.

*  Went back to watch the 4th quarter of the 49ers game, then did the dishes, came online to read, check Facebook and write this post.

My genealogy Friday - 11 January 2013

Today was clear and cool, high of 58F, low of 43F.  I stayed home and did genealogy stuff...

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Follow-Up Friday - Helpful Reader Comments.  Then posted WikiTree Announces Free GEDCOM Comparisons and The Family History Writing Challenge Motivates Members to Write Their Stories.  Worked in WikiTree for awhile trying to find the GEDMatch and figured out it wasn't there for persons already in the tree.

*  Wrote Randy will be at Sun City Palm Desert Genealogy Club on Monday, 14 January and How Fast Could You Travel Across the USA in the 1800s? and set it for later.

*  Answered some email, then did the Spit into the 23andMe tube and packaged it up to send off to get my results.  Easy.  Spent quite a while answering questions on 23andMe for the Health survey.  

*  Wrote the Surname Saturday post, and then added content and sources for the Draper family from Dedham, Roxbury and Medfield VR books.

*  Went in for dinner at 5:30 p.m., watched TV news, read the paper and did the dishes.

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to do more Draper and Mason work in VRs, then worked on the SNGF post.  Wrote Whose Hand Is This?

*  Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 10 January 2013

It was a cold, rainy and windy day here outside the Genea-Cave.  We went out for dinner anyway.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1860 U.S. Census Record for David Auble Family.

*  Listened to and chatted during Marian's Fieldstone Common radio show with David Lambert.  A good one.  Worked in the database a bit finding Auble folks on Find A Grave.

*  Checked out Archives.com collections, and wrote Archives.com ($$) Adds More Vital Records.

*  Answered some email, checked Facebook, looked for, found and wrote My Purported Line Back to Adam and Eve -- 140 Generations from Adam to Randy!  Messed around in the Medieval database I have and didn't find that line back more than 3 generations.  

*  We left at 4:30 p.m. to pick up Diane B. at her hotel, drove to Coronado for dinner at the Brigantine, then drove through Balboa Park, Harbor Island, Point Loma, the Waterfront and back to Diane's hotel at 8:30 for a quick picture.  Then home.

*  Home by 9 p.m., read, posted fuzzy picture to Facebook, added to the Best Of post, worked a bit in Find A Grave on the MyHeritage Record Search list, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 9 January 2013

This was a good genealogy day - some blogging, some data entry and the CVGS Research Group.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that (Not So) Wordless Wednesday- Post 238: My Father in the Greenhouse posted, and wrote Getting Family Tree Maker 2012 Help and set it for later.

*  Packed up the laptop ,and we left at 10:10 a.m. for Linda's doctor's appointment.  I left at 11:20 a.m. and got to the library by 11:45 a.m.  

*  Setup the laptop, and Gary brought the projector a bit later, and the Research Group had 15 attendees, including a guest, Lavinia from Oakland.  

*  Home by 2:45 p.m. to read, then wrote Dear Randy - How Do I Cite an Online Family Tree?  Answered some email.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch news on TV, read the paper, take a short nap, eat dinner, put out the trash  and wash the dishes.

*  Online again at 7 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and work on adding California Marriages for Seaver from FamilySearch to the database.  Got through about 40 of them - maybe 2/3 were already in my database without a date or source.  Used census records and American Ancestors and California Death Index to find some dates and names.

*  Wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 8 January 2013

This was a stay-at-home and play genealogy day for me - I had great fun!

*  Read email and blogs, and noted that Genealogy Searching Then and Now - Part 2: Now (2013) posted.

*  Started in on the Brocke research with the USGenWeb site, then used the Earthpoint site and Google Earth to zero in on the Wiseman memorial.  Wrote Finding Family Information about the Brocke Family.

*  Worked on the Konig family records in my database - sorted out the papers and hopefully got the families right, and added sources.

*  Went in at 5:30 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV news, eat dinner and wash the dishes.  

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, check Facebook, then looked at Historic Map works maps of Cedar County, and checked Fold3 for Homestead records (nope!).

*  Went on to MyHeritage Record Matches and did some CA Births and Deaths, then several obits from NewspaperARCHIVE, and finally some Find A Grave entries (plus more collaterals within Find A Grave).  

*  Answered some email, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy Monday - 7 January 2013

Another genealogy Monday - I can usually get a lot done on Mondays!  No meetings, usually!

*  Read email and blogs, and wrote Amanuensis Monday - Martin Carringer's Revolutionary War Pension File: Post 5: Molly's 1839 Deposition and Family Record.

*  Listened to and participated in the Mondays with Myrt webinar - we searched for records of a family to help one of the listeners.

*  Researched and wrote Chasing Down Original Sources for My Spengler Families - I Love Digital Microfilm!  Got the sources fixed, too.

*  After lunch, worked some more in Spengler sources then took the CVGS Newsletter down to the UPS Store and published it.  Returned home at 2:30 p.m., wrote Review: Legacy QuickGuide on Canadian Genealogy.  Also sent email to CVGS membership with newsletter attached.

*  Added several Spengler and Konig families to the FamilySearch Family Tree using RootsMagic.

*  Went in at 5:30 p.m. for dinner, watched the first half of the BCS game, read the paper, and washed the dishes.

*  Online at 7 p.m. to read, check Facebook, add to the Best Of post, answer some emails, and did some Find A Grave entries.  Wrote this post.

My genealogy Sunday - 6 January 2013

Just another typical Sunday here at the Genea-Cave - but I did make some genealogy progress today!

*  Read email and blogs, then finished up the Best Of post.

*  Went off to church at 9:30 a.m., talked to John before service about genealogy, then enjoyed the post-service goodies.  Home by 11:45 a.m.

*  Watched football for awhile, and noted that Best of the Genea-Blogs - 30 December 2012 to 5 January 2013 posted.

*  Found many Spengler births, baptisms and marriages in the Pennsylvania Church Records on Ancestry.com - great collection!  Added sources to the data.

&  Watched more football, then back online to check Facebook, read, answer email, and wrote Genea-Musings is #80 on the GenealogyInTime Hit Parade.

*  Went in for dinner at 5:30 p.m., and back online by 6:30 p.m.

*  Finished up, and did a final edit, the CVGS Newsletter, printed off the master copy.  

*  Added source citations for information in the Kings of York County typescript.  Need to go back into the Pennsylvania Church records for the King/Koenig folks.  

*  Did some Find A Grave entries from the MyHeritage Record Search list.  Knocked off only 7 from the list, but probably did 50 people.  Did lots of Griesers in Latah County, Idaho.  Need to look for Brockes there too!

*  Added to the Best Of post, then wrote this post.

My genealogy Saturday - 5 January 2013

I had some genealogy fun today and got some data entered into the database.

*  Packed up the laptop and read email and blogs in a hurry before leaving at 7:45 a.m. for the Men's Bible Study breakfast at 8 a.m.

*  Left the breakfast at 9:15 and got to Bonita library at 9:20 a.m. and had to wait for it to open at 9:30 a.m.  Got set up for my FTM 2012 workshop and started at about 9:50 a.m.  We had 10 there - disappointing turnout but probably because it was short notice.  It ended at 12 noon, and I talked to Pam and Sam for awhile about their research problems.

*  Got to our church at 12:40 p.m. just in time for the reception after Walt's memorial service.

*  Home by 1:45 p.m. to watch football after noting that Surname Saturday - WIGHT (England > Medfield, Mass.) and Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Where Were They 100 Years ago? posted.  Read the paper and got a nap too!

*  Read a bit from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., checked Facebook, when we got ready to go to dinner at Black Angus.  Got there at 5:40 and seated immediately.  Finally ordered at 6, got drinks at 6:10, bread at 6:15, salad at 6:25 and meal at 6:30.  Linda sent hers back as too cold...the next filet was no hotter so she brought it home after 4 bites.  

*  Home to watch football, then online at around 8 p.m. to answer email, search the bookcase for the Spangler notebook, and happily entered about 100 source citations for several Spangler families in York PA from the Spangler book.  I need to check the Ancestry collection of PA church records for these families.

My genealogy day - 4 January 2013

Genealogy days are here again, the path ahead is clear again, I'll sing a song of cheer again, Genealogy days are here again...at last!

*  Was able to read email and blogs this morning after getting the grandgirls fed and entertained.  also wrote Genealogy Searching Then and Now - Part 1: Then (pre-1999).

*  Got them packed up, and we went off to Mission Valley at 11:15 a.m. for lunch at In 'n Out and meet Tami to transfer the girls and their stuff to their mom.  Hugs and kisses goodbye, and we were home by 1:30 p.m.

*  Read, then wrote Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - January 2013 and Family Tree Maker 2012 Workshop on Saturday, 5 January on the CVGS blog.  Then added Family Tree Maker 2012 Workshop on Saturday, 5 January in Bonita CA to Genea-Musings too.

*  Worked a bit more in FTM 2012 for the Saturday workshop, and printed off 15 copies of the handout.  Got the laptop set up too with the small GEDCOM program.  

*  Checked Facebook and Google + and wrote the Surname Saturday post.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the news, read the paper, and eat dinner.  Washed the dishes wile Linda did her email.

*  Online again at 6:30 p.m. to work on the CVGS Newsletter.  Got it 90% complete.  

*  Answered email, wrote the SNGF post, and then added Notes to some Events in RootsMagic.  Also found some ancestral families without any source citations - gotta fix that!  

*  Added to the Best Of post and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 3 January 2013

It wasn't much of a genealogy day, let alone a genealogy two weeks or so.

We left on Monday, 24 December for two days in Huntington Beach with Tami and the grandgirls (we stayed in a motel), then two days in Santa Cruz with Lori and the grandboys (we stayed in a motel there too), two days at Linda's brother's home in Monte Rio (we stayed with Paul), and two days traveling home (we stayed overnight in Buellton in a motel).  We picked up the grandgirls in Huntington Beach on Monday and got home about 3 p.m.  The girls are still with us - they may go home on Friday.  Or not...

The only real genealogy done on the trip was the day at Paul's where he got out the family papers and photos and we went through them.  I didn't copy any of them, though - I already have most of them, I think.  We did look at the Cedar County, Nebraska USGenWeb site and found some Brocke and Greiser information trying to figure out where the Brocke farm was located.  I managed to go through cousin Bonnie's 500+ photos that she sent on DVD to the family.  I did a little blogging but mainly had the posts pre-written and scheduled.

Since we've been home, I've managed to squeeze in several hours every day reading and blogging, but no real research or database work.  I have answered my emails from the trip, and went to the CVGS Board meeting on Wednesday and started the CVGS Newsletter for January.

Today, in addition to writing Treasure Chest Thursday - 1870 U.S. Census Record for David Auble Family and Ancestry's Wild Card Search is Still Broken For Me - Please Fix It!, I managed to put together the handout for the FTM 2012 workshop I'm giving on Saturday (arranged at the last minute...like 12/28) and practiced doing some of the FTM 2012 tasks I want to discuss.  

Dealing with two darling little girls aged 4 and 7 is hard work even though they play pretty well by themselves and together.  Then there's food and shower time and bedtime.  

I hope to get back on track on Friday...
