My Genealogy Wednesday - 31 July 2013

It was a pretty busy genealogy day - let's see if I can remember everything I did!

*  Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 267: My Mother and Grandmother in 1930 and then SDGS Seminar on Saturday, 21 September 2013.

*  Answered the Find A Grave message about Henry Carringer's gravestone, then had lunch and went off to the library for the CVGS program.

*  Had some snacks at the CVGS meeting, talked to the scholarship recipient, then the business meeting and Karen gave her talk on "Women Heroes of the Revolution."  Good job!

*  Got a book, and home to watch the end of the Padres game.  Pads lost 4-1 to Reds (won 6 of 8, now 50-59).

*  Online at 3:40 p.m. to read, then wrote Nice Surprise - A Find A Grave Photo Request Fulfilled.  Added the images to my database, added more fact notes.

*  Watched the first part of the Applegate WDYTYA? episode, then went in for dinner, and back after dinner and chores to watch the rest.  Lots of unanswered questions!

*  Added more Fact Notes to the database, even found some old papers that need scanning, and then worked in the database adding sources and facts.  Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My Genealogy Tuesday - 30 July 2013

It was my mother's 94th birthday today - I thought about her a lot today.  The love, the goodness, the wisdom.  I was so lucky!  Oh, her ancestry.  got a present today in email too - a Find A Grave photo of her great-great grandfather's gravestone.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote This Week's Genealogical Eclectica - 30 July 2013 and then Checking Out the FamilySearch "Export Search Results" Feature - Fail! and set it for noon time.

*  Worked on the BLM Tract Books - found that David Smith also had land claims - and wrote Finding More Information About Land Grants in U.S. BLM Tract Books on FamilySearch and set it for later.  Added the land patents and source to the database for what was missing.

*  Talked on the phone to Matt - interesting call and product.

*  Worked in the database, adding sources and content.  Solved several mysteries too.  Deleted some extraneous unconnected persons also.

*  Went in at 5:20 p.m. to watch TV news, eat dinner, water the front plants, get Ruthie's mail, and looked for the mouse.  We still have at least one!  Hid the gluepads in different places.

*  Online at 6:20 p.m. to read, then worked in the database some more.

*  Went in at 7:20 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and then my book.  forgot all about WDYTYA?  I'll have to watch it online soon.  Pads won 4-2 over the Reds (now 50-58, won 5 out of 6, 8 out of 11, 3 straight).

My Genealogy Monday - 29 July 2013

This was a very typical Monday when I have an OASIS class to teach.  The Padres won, also!

*  Read email and blogs, noted that Amanuensis Monday - Probate Records of Bridget (--?--) (Verry) Giles (1600-1680) of Salem, Massachusetts posted.  Then wrote My Top Ten Most Useful Online Genealogy Databases to Research My Family Tree and set it for later in the morning.

*  Packed up the flash drive and handouts for my final OASIS class in this series, and off to my 10:15 a.m. class in Mission Valley.  Was there 45 minutes early, set up the flash drive presentation and the different websites, checked in at the office, and chatted as the students came in.  This was a good class of 12 - some had genealogy experience, many didn't.  Good questions and they seemed to do their homework.  Over at 12:30 and headed home.

*  Home by 1 p.m. to eat lunch, read, then watched the Mondays With Myrt.  Answered some email, modified an article for a newsletter, and checked Facebook and Google+.  Post #7000 on Genea-Musings posted also.

*  Spent an hour doing online research, adding sources and content to the database.  Went in at 5 p.m. to eat dinner, supervise the kids working in the garden, and back online for more research and citing.

*  Went in at 7:10 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper then my Michael Palmer book, and wash the dishes.  Pads won 2-1 over the Reds on a walk-off homer by Denorfia in the bottom of the 9th.  Kelly got splashed again with the gatorade.  Pads now 49-58, won 7 of 11.

*  Online at 10 p.m. to read, check Facebook, add to the Best Of post, and write this post.

*  Read email and blogs, and finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 21 to 27 July 2013 post and set it for after noon.

*  We went off to church at 9:20 a.m., and were home by 11:30 p.m.  Talked a bit to John F. about his study group and to John C. about genealogy.

*  Had lunch, answered some email, and went in at 1 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, take a short nap, do some chores.  Padres won, 1-0, now 6 of 10, and 48-58.  Noted that CVGS Program Meeting - Wednesday, 31 July on "Women Heroes of the American Revolution" posted.

My Genealogy Saturday - 27 July 2013

This was a pretty good genealogy day - did something new, and made some progress on my database, plus the Padres won.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - CUTLER (England to colonial Massachusetts) posted.  Did some online work and found some Find A Grave entries - added content and sources.

*  I left at 9:10 a.m. for the SDGS Library on Kearny Mesa.  Got the projector and laptop set up with Miriam's help, and had 10 folks for the RootsMagic user's group.  I sat in for Chris who is in Nebraska.  The two hours went really fast!  Only two had seen RootsMagic interact with FamilySearch Family Tree.  Only one or two were using the To-Do List and the Research Log, and one the Correspondence List.  Talked to Miriam a bit afterwards.

*  Home by 1 p.m. to eat lunch, then note that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- a 100 Word Genealogy Challenge posted.  Decided to work in the files - moved some Mass. Town Records from "To be Filed" to Surname/Couple folders, and then sourced them.  Went through the Fuller Mayflower book (I copied pages at SDGS Library three weeks ago) and added content and sources to the database for my line. Did more online research and added content and sources to the database until 5 p.m.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, eat dinner, read NGSQ, and start my new Michael Palmer book.  Also worked on the iPhone a bit.  Pads won 12-3 over D-backs - a much better game than last night!  Now won 5 of 8 and are 47-58.

My Genealogy FriDay - 26 July 2013

Another all-genealogy day, but not the night - shoulda done genealogy instead of watching the Padres game.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Follow-Up Friday - Interesting and Helpful Reader Comments for 26 July 2013 and then researched and wrote More Land Patents in Cheyenne County, Kansas for Devier Smith and Della Smith and set it for noon time.

*  Got the laptop set up, downloaded copy.com and synced my Ancestor Files to the laptop from Copy.  However, forgot to put the land patents into Copy, so did that and waited several hours before they showed up.  Also sent the latest RootsMagic file to Dropbox and into the laptop.  Fired up RM, and found all of the media links.  Now I'm ready for Saturday at the SDGS Library.

*  Worked in the database for several hours, adding content and sources.  Wrote the SNGF post.

*  We left at 5 p.m. for dinner at El Pollo Loco.  Home by 6:15 p.m. to do chores - feed the birds, water the front plants, and check email and blogs.  Went in at 6:40 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and read my Counts book.  Pads lost 10-0 to the D-backs, and it wasn't that close!  Drat (won 4 of 7, now 46-58).

*  Online at 9:15 to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and do more online sleuthing to add content and sources to the database.  Wrote this post.

*  Left at 9:45 a.m. for the doctor's office - appointment was at 10:30 and not 10.  Got the glucose level down to acceptable and weight was down 8 pounds, so doctor happy.  Stopped at pharmacy on way back.

*  Online at 11:15 a.m. to read, ponder what to write about.  Got more land patents - one for Devier and one for Della, thanks to a reader comment.  Added events and sources for them too. Went in at 12 noon to have lunch, and remembered the Padres game was on.  Watched until 1, Pads up 6-0 after 3.5 innings.  Pads eventually won 10-8 over Brewers in a 4 hour game (now 46-57, won 4 of 6).

*  Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 266: My Mother's 1942 Picture and then worked in RootsMagic merging and editing place names.  That took awhile - over 6,500 of them!  I'm sure I missed some, but I caught a lot of duplicates and outright errors.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, eat dinner, read my Stephen Coonts book, put out the trash, water the front plants and wash the dishes.  Pads lost 3-1 to the Brewers, so now 45-57 (won 3 of 5).

My genealogy weekend - 11 July to 14 July 2013

It was a busy weekend, with the grandgirls here to visit and enjoy Grandpa and Grandma Camp.

1)  Thursday - we met Tami in Carlsbad to pick up the girls, had lunch at Ruby's and were home by 1 p.m.  We went to the Padres-Giants game on Thursday night, we lost 4-2 (drat).  Had a trolley malfunction on the way home - had to get off and wait for the next one, so home after 11.

The only genealogy on Thursday was reading email, blogs, and editing the presentations.

2)  Friday  - was able to write some blog posts today, plus did a final edit on the two presentations.  The girls went swimming with Linda in the afternoon, and we went to Chik Fil A for dinner.  Did some blog writing in the evening.

3)  Saturday - I left at 9 a.m. for the SDGS program meeting, gave my two presentations, and was to church at 1 p.m. to grab some lunch at the memorial service for Dick.  Home soon after!

Home to take a nap, wokr with the girls, read a bit, and we left at 5 p.m. for In N Out for dinner and then the trolley to Petco Park for the Padres-Giants game.  Lincecum threw a no-hitter (my 3rd, I think) and the Pads lost 9-0.  No trolley problems!

4)  Sunday, 14 July -- got the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 7 to 13 July 2013 post ready to go, and we went off to church aft 9:30 a.m.  Home by 11:45 a.m. to have lunch.

Did a little research before I went in at 1 p.m. to watch the Padres game.  Payback, Pads won 10-1 (so now 42-54, lost 17 of 21).

*  Tami came, so we packed the girls up, and we went to Lolita's for dinner, and they went home.

*  Online at 5 p.m. to watch the Mastering Genealogy Proof HOA on YouTube, while reading and doing some research work also.

*  Wrote two blog posts for Monday morning, and did some random online research to fill holes in the database, adding content and sources. Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

My Genealogy Tuesday - 9 July 2013

I was home all day today on the computer until dinner time, and then watched the Padres game.  A WIN finally.

*  Read email and blogs, then researched and wrote This Week's Genealogical Eclectica - 9 July 2013.  I need to add to that during the week rather than do it all on Tuesday morning.

*  Watched most of the Mondays With Myrt HOA - skipped through it.  Worked in GenealogyBank for the rest of the morning adding Seaver obituaries and source citations to the database.  Probably added 20 to 30 obits and associated data, including spouses and children to some families.

*  Researched and wrote Creating a Source Citation for an Online Newspaper Collection based on the morning's work.

*  Did some more in GenealogyBank until about 3 p.m.  Checked Facebook, answered some email, edited my cruise syllabus and sent it off.

*  We left at 4:45 p.m. to take Ruthie to dinner for her birthday at the Barbecue Pit in NC.   Then home by 7 p.m. to watch the Padres game.  got the paper read, and my book finished just as the Padres won, 2-1 over the Rockies (won 1 in a row, 2 out of 11, now 41-50, still last place in the NLWest, a big hole to climb out of).

*  Online at 10 p.m. to read, then wrote this post.

My Genealogy Monday - 8 July 2013

It was a busy genealogy day and I got very little new accomplished, other than 30 minutes of useful research at the SDGS Library.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that Amanuensis Monday - Probate Records of Ann (--?--) Collins (605-1691) of Lynn, Mass. posted.

*  Gathered up the handouts, the flash drive, the laptop and my phone and off to Mission Valley at 9:10 a.m. to teach my first OASIS class of the current tertile.

*  Got there and was set up by 9:40 a.m., checked in at the office, had 12 folks show up to learn about "Beginning Computer Genealogy" and was done before 12:30 p.m.  Whew, nonstop presenting!

*  Off to lunch at McDonalds, then to the SDGS Library, and found info in several books that I wanted to copy.  Used the iPhone - made 45 images.  Then Del came, and we talked about blogging for about 45 minutes.  I was home by 3 p.m.

*  Noted that Ancestry.com Help I Don't Need posted and found that I'm not the only one!  Worked in RootsMagic 6 and FSFT to get sources right, then wrote Checking How Sources From RootsMagic 6 Transfer to FamilySearch Family Tree.

*  Went in to eat dinner and watch TV news, then back on the computer to download the 45 images from the iPhone to the computer and rename the files so I know where they came from.

*  Went in at 7:20 p.m. to watch the Padres game, finish the paper, and read my book.  Pads lost 4-2 to Rockies (10 straight losses, now 40-50 and fading fast in the NL West).

*  Online at 10:15 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and write this post.

My Genealogy Sunday - 7 July 2013

It was a really bad day for the computer and the Padres, I hope that doesn't continue.  It really sapped my production here in the Genealogy Cave.

*  Read email and blogs, and finished up Best of the Genea-Blogs - 30 June to 6 July 2013.  We went off to church at 9:30 a.m. and were home by 11:30 a.m.

*  I watched the Padres game, ate lunch and read the paper.  Linda used the computer and had all sorts of problems - it was very unresponsive.  She finally finished, and I tried to reboot it manually (since going to Start > Restart didn't work).  When it started back up, a screen for "Startup Repair" showed and I clicked it to do its thing, and it took 30 minutes, but started up normally.  By this time the Padres had lost to the Nats 11-7 (9 straight losses, now 40-49), and I was really, um, "concerned."  Fuming too.

*  It seemed to be working OK, so I decided to make sure that I had my email saved on the external drive, so I figured out how to do that, and think I've done it right.  I also backed up some of the recently used file folders.

*  Finally, I was ready to do some useful work, so I got into the "To Be Filed" folder and transcribed a will into RootsMagic.  We left for dinner at 5 p.m. and ate at Lolita's (my one beef taco and a soda), and were home before 6.

*  Back online to finish up the transcription, then wrote a source citation for it, and checked the FHL Catalog for others.  Found a number of wills were abstracted or transcribed in The Mayflower Descendant, and some of the issues are online at FamilySearch.  Big files, 25 mb or more, and they didn't want to load quickly.  That started the slowdown on the computer again.  Drat.

*  Decided I'd better get my Ancestry handouts and presentations revised one more time, so did that and saved them as PDFs.  Put them on Dropbox to transfer to the laptop.

*  Answered some email (very slow computer) and wrote two blog posts for Monday since i'll be away from 9 to 3 or later.  Wrote this post.

My Genealogy Saturday - 6 July 2013

It was a very full genealogy day, and I finished two projects.  One more to finish...the SDGS talk handouts.  Then they start over again, it seems.

*  Read email and blogs in a hurry, then off to the Bible Study breakfast at Marie Callenders.  Only 5 guys there.

*  Home by 9:45 a.m. to note that Surname Saturday - COLLINS (England to Colonial Massachusetts) posted and wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your "Genealogy Pie".

*  Printed off the four OASIS syllabi after one more edit round.  Then printed off the CVGS Newsletter after one more editing round.

*  Went in at 1 p.m. to watch the Padres game...took a nap, read the paper.  Gathered the copy material up at 2:15 p.m. and went to the UPS Store to publish the Newsletter and get my 12 copies for the OASIS classes.  Had to take the Newsletters to the Post Office.

*  Home at 3 p.m. to watch the Padres lose, 5-4 to the Nats (8 straight losses, now 40-48, woe is us!).  We ate dinner.

*  Online at 5 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, answer some email ,check Facebook and Google+.

* Added source citations for transcribed probate records for the Hildreth part of the Seaver ancestry.  Then worked in the database until 9:45 p.m. adding content and sources from Ancestry, FamilySearch, AmericanAncestors databases, plus some FindAGrave!  Whew.  Most I've done in awhile.  Wrote this post.

My Genealogy Friday - 5 July 2013

Today seemed  like a Sunday because we had Thursday off, so now we have a whole weekend to go!  Cool.  Got several projects almost finished today...feels good, relieves deadline pressure.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Follow-Up Friday - Helpful and Useful Reader Comments, mainly about Ancestry old and new search.

*  Got started on the OASIS handouts and presentations.  Got the first two done in the morning.  Had to change the FamilySearch screens.  Added more links to the handout to reflect those changes.

*  Research and wrote Comparing "Old Search" and "New Search" Results on Ancestry.com - Exact Matches.

*  Back into the presentations, got the other two done.  They all need one more editor pass.  Need to print them up on Saturday.

*  Worked on the CVGS Newsletter, and got it 80% finished.  Waited for one missing piece.

*  Went in at 4 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, take a nap, eat dinner, water the front plants, and wash the dishes.  Pads lost to the Nats 8-5, and it wasn't that close (AAARRRGGGHHHH - 7 straight, now 40-47, woe, woe, woe.  What's a Padres fan to do?).

*  Online at 7:30 p.m., Worked more on the CVGS Newsletter, and the missing piece arrive at about 8:30 p.m.  Included it, and now it's about 98% done.  Have some white space to fill.  Need to print and mail this on Saturday also.

*  Wrote the Surname Saturday post, then did more online research several Mass. families that needed dates, place and sources.

*  Checked Facebook, wrote this post.  Done.

My Genealogy Thursday - 4 July 2013

This was a pretty typical 4th of July for us - we stayed home, watched baseball, went to the fireworks after dark.

*  Read email and blogs, and noted that Independence Day - My Revolutionary War Soldiers posted.

*  Revised the Member Tree presentation, and the handout too.  Then went in to watch the Padres game with Boston - lost again, 8-2 (6 straight losses, now 40-46, we need our players back!).

*  Noted that Treasure Chest Thursday - 1820 U.S. Census Record for Jonathan Oatley Household posted. Revised the Search presentation and the handout - almost every screen due to Ancestry revisions.  Now i'm behind schedule!

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to eat dinner, then mowed the front lawn, put out the trash, and washed the dishes.

*  Worked a bit in RM adding info to FSFT...but we left at 7 p.m. to go to ColdStone for ice cream, and home.  I did more RM to FSFT work, and we went off at 8:30 p.m. to watch fireworks over the country club at our church parking lot.  Some friends were there.  Good show - started early at 8:45 p.m.  Home by 9:30 p.m.

*  Worked awhile in RM to FSFT again - actually found useful info in FSFT for some spouses of collateral Carringers.  Wrote this post.

*  Went in at 4:15 p.m. to watch the Padres game, had dinner, read the paper, filled the bird feeder,  and the Pads lost 2-1 to Red Sox on a walkoff homer.  Drat - now 40-45, lost 5 straight.

*  Checked Facebook, wrote the 4th of July post, and wrote this post.
