My Genealogy Sunday - 30 June 2013

Six months of 2013 are now gone.  I wonder how much progress I've made?

*  Read email and blogs, finished Best of the Genea-Blogs - 23 to 29 June 2013 and set it for after noon.  Went off to church at 9:30 a.m., home by 11:30 a.m., but watched the Padres lose 6-2 to Marlins on a walkoff grand slam in the 9th.  A winnable game...

*  Took Mark to the airport at 4 p.m., home by 5 p.m. for dinner and watched TV news.

*  Online at 5:20 p.m. to watch the MGP Hangout on air with DearMYRTLE.

*  Checked Facebook, answered some emails, wrote the Amanuensis Monday post, and then worked on the database - first with the Collins and then the Cr's.

*  Genealogy today was 8.0 hours.

My Genealogy Saturday - 29 June 2013

I spent just about all day on the computer - my neck, back and shoulders are sore. What I didn't work on was the presentations...gotta do it on Sunday and next week.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Surname Saturday - COLLINS (England to colonial Massachusetts).  Then wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun (SNGF) - Create a Gravestone and set it for later.

*  Worked in Geni.com for awhile - copied relationships to several royals...not the same as the Weis or Roberts books!  I wonder why?  Added several ancestors, and resolved some merges on Geni also.

*  Posted CVGS Annual Picnic Highlights on the CVGC blog.  Wrote another post too.

*  Signed up for Lisa Cooke's Premium podcasts/videos - downloaded several to the computer.

*  Added quite a few photos to Pinterest - NGS 2013 and several others.

*  Worked in the database on loose Richman families in the 1800s, trying to search census records on FindMyPast to help define them.

*  We left at 5:20 p.m. to take food to Nellie, and then to Lolita's for dinner.  Home by 7 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, and work in the database adding content and sources.  Added several more families in the Lincoln line using Mass VR books.

*  Worked in the Cr* list in the database, got through Crittenden adding data and sources.

*  Wrote this post, and checked in on Facebook.

Genealogy today was 12.0 hours.

*  Researched and wrote Comparing "Old Search" and "New Search" Results on Ancestry.com.

*  Went in at 4 p.m. to watch the Padres game, we won 9-2 over the Marlins.  now 40-40.

*  Worked in the database for over an hour, adding content and sources.  Downloaded my Google Reader file.  Wrote this post.

My Genealogy Thursday - 27 June 2013

Three more days until the end of June - 2013 is almost half spent...

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1830 U.S. Census for Jonathan Oatley Household and then Ancestry.com to Retire "Old Search" Capability and set it for 11 a.m.

*  Worked on the Ancestry Member Tree presentation for several hours, taking a break for lunch.  Got it probably 75% completed.

*  Found a quirk in Ancestry Trees - notes didn't transfer in GEDCOM for some folks.  Wrote Ancestry.com Quirk - RootsMagic 6 Person Notes Don't Always Upload to a New Ancestry Member Tree.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. for dinner, read the paper, and watch TV news.

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, add Event notes for vital certificates in RootsMagic, and eventually got going adding content and sources for persons in my RootsMagic database.   Kind of jumped around, but got 80+ sources added today.

*  Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 11.0 hours.  No Padres game tonight...a good genealogy day!

My Genealogy Wednesday - 26 June 2013

This was a very typical summer Wednesday - some blogging, a CVGS meeting, some research, and a Padres game.  Got very little done today, and did not work on them ost important task at all.

*  Read email and blogs, found some photos hiding in a file, and wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 262: My Four-Generation Picture.  Answered some email, and wrote Does MyHeritage Show Living Persons in Their Family Trees?

*  We left at 10:45 a.m. for the CVGS picnic at the Brocks.  Had a great time talking to friends, hearing about attendees ancestral origins, and playing a genea-trivia game.  Plus the horse...

*  Home by 2:30 p.m. to read, then wrote I've Switched to Feedly for My Blog Reading before watching the last half of the RootsMagic 6 webinar, and working a bit in the FSFT using RM6.

*  Went in for dinner, did some chores, and online at 6:30 p.m. to work some more in the FSFT and add to the Best Of post.

*  Went in to watch the Padres game at 7:30 p.m., read the paper, finished my Patterson book,  updated my iPhone apps, checked more into the Legacy Tex app, and Pads lost 7-5 to the Phillies in 13 innings.  Drat (now 39-40, 3 games out).

*  Quickly read blogs, checked Facebook, wrote this post and off to bed.

Genealogy today was 9.0 hours.

My Genealogy Tuesday - 25 June 2013

My Genea-Musings and Geneaholic stats went haywire today - I wonder why?  Perhaps folks changing to Feedly from Google Reader?  I received about 400 feeds from one blog today that posts one a week.  Will be interesting to see if that continues.  The Google Stats don't show a specific blog post.  My other metrics on Sitemeter don't show a big jump...and the Stats for Referring sites on Google show a big jump.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Tuesday's Tip - Use FamilySearch Research Wiki to Find Online Record Collections and finished Eclectica Tuesday Genealogy Findings and set it for later.

*  Got started again on my AMT presentation, and then went off to lunch with Ruth H.  She's had some interesting genealogy experiences this last year!

*  Home at 1:30 p.m. to find the pest company coming soon to spray the outside foundation, remove spider webs and wasp nests, set mouse traps, and spray inside baseboards.

*  Did some more work on the presentation, but the pest company came at 3 p.m. and we left at 3:30 p.m. to visit Ruthie at her new place.  We stayed for dinner, and saw Nina too.  Home by 6:30 p.m.

*  Read a bit, then went in and watched the Padres game, read the paper, and read my Patterson book.  Pads lost 6-2 to the Phillies, back to .500 at 39-39.

*  Online at 10:15 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, and write this post.

Genealogy today was 5.0 hours.

My Genealogy Monday - 24 June 2013

No database or online research today - too many irons in the fire, plus a Padres game.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that Amanuensis Monday - Probate Records of Michael Bowden (1673-1741) posted, and participated in the Mondays with Myrt Hangout on Air.

*  Worked a bit on my Ancestry Member Tree presentation for SDGS in 3 weeks.  Bagged the two caught mice in the kitchen, and noticed another one caught behind the TV.  The sticky traps work great!  That's 8 caught with 6 traps so far in the past month.

*  Researched and wrote Beginners, Professionals, Sources, Citations, EE, and More.

*  Worked in RootsMagic adding facts and sources to FamilySearch Family Tree for several of my ancestral families.  Found several Events were missing, so found the images and added images and sources to the database, then to the FSFT.

*  Added to the Best Of post and the Eclectica post.  Where did the time go?  Wrote Free Access to Irish Records on FindMyPast.com - June 27th to 30th.

*  We left at 5 p.m. for the trolley, ate at the Tin Fish, into Petco Park by 6:30 p.m., read the paper, watched the game - boring until the 9th inning.  Behind 3-0, Pads rallied to tie in the 9th and won it in the 10th.  Home by 11 p.m. (just made the 10:30 trolley).

*  Checked email and blogs, wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 8.0 hours.

My genealogy Sunday - 23 June 2013

I tried to catch up a bit today after the week away, watch the Padres game, and even do a little searching online.

*  Read email and blogs, got Best of the Genea-Blogs - 16 to 22 June 2013 ready to post.  Off to church at 9:30, and home by 11:30 a.m.

*  Watched most of the MGP Chapter 1 HOA on YouTube.

*  Went in at 1 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper and take a nap.  Pads lost 3-1 to the Dodgers (so now 38-38 on the season).

*  Worked online for an hour answering email, and checked Facebook. Went in for dinner at 4:45 p.m. and back online just after 5 p.m.

*  Watched the MGP Chapter 2 HOA on YouTube - excellent discussion of the definitions and examples of sources, information and evidence.

*  Went out and did some chores while Linda did her email.

*  Online at 8 p.m. to read, write CVGS Annual Picnic - Wednesday, 26 June, 11 a.m. at the Brock's House and the Amanuensis Monday post.

My Genealogy Saturday - 22 June 2013

It was a pretty good genealogy day.  I'm back from Santa Cruz.  Even did some blog posting while there, and edited my presentation too, but did not have the usual 8 to 10 hours a day - only 2-5 hours a day, mostly reading and adding to curated posts.

*  Had 30 minutes of hassle getting the computer to work - finally rebooted and it was fine after that.  Read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - WAGET (England? > colonial Massachusetts) posted.  Got a helpful comment too!

*  Reviewed the presentation one more time, found some errors, added some content, saved it to Dropbox, opened laptop, copied it to the laptop file.  Collected my laptop, the projector and extension cord and we were off at 11 a.m.

*  Dropped Linda at Carlsbad outlet mall for lunch with her friend, then down to Encinitas at noon to Borrelli's for the POINTers group meeting.  About 23 in attendance.  Had a great lunch (spaghetti, meatballs, bread) and set up by 1:30 p.m. to give my FamilySearch talk.  Went pretty well, about 75 minutes, and left at 3 p.m. to pick Linda up.  We were home by 4:15 p.m.

*  Watched the Padres game, read the paper and FTMagazine, ate dinner - we lost 6-1 to the Dodgers.  Now 38-37.  Read email and blogs, noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Genealogy Database Statistics posted.

*  Online at 7:30 p.m. to add to the Best Of post, answer some emails, check Facebook, and work in the database.  Added content from Vermont VR databases, added sources, and then found some Find A Grave records that Record Matches missed.

*  Wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 7.0 hours.

My Genealogy Saturday - 15 June 2013

June is half over, and my Padres made it to .500 (after starting off 5-15, they're now 34-34).  This was not a big genealogy day for me.

*  Read email and blogs, then off to the Men's breakfast Bible Study at Marie Callender's.  Good food, good discussion.  We talked a bit about legacies.

*  Home by 10 a.m. to read, note that Surname Saturday - COLBURN (England > colonial Massachusetts) posted.

*  Got into MitoSearch, signed up for the FTDNA Haplogroup K Project, and checked my mtDNA matches.  I have one!

*  Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Three Things About Your Father posted, and added a picture and some edits.

*  Worked in the database.  An email correspondent thought I had Thomas Boylston's parents wrong, and it's clear that I did.  I found a parish register on Internet Archive that permitted me to fill out his birth family, including source citations.  Worked happily on that for several hours.

*  Went in at 4 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV golf, and we left at 4:45 p.m. for Barbara's, then to El Pollo Loco for dinner, and the trolley to Petco Park for the Padres game.  Pads won 6-4 over the D-backs, now only 3 games out of first place.  There's hope in Sand-ville.

*  Home on the trolley b y 10:230 p.m.  Printed out my boarding pass to San Jose, then read , added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 6.0 hours.

I'll be in Santa Cruz with my daughter and family until Friday night, so this blog will be dark until Saturday next.

My Genealogy Friday - 14 June 2013

Two more days until I go off to Santa Cruz again - I have almost all of my scheduled posts done.  I think...

*  Read email and blog posts, then wrote Follow-Up Friday - Interesting and Helpful Reader Comments.

*  Worked on the syllabus material, and edited the presentation some more, for next Saturday's talk, got it done, PDFed, and put on Dropbox for safekeeping.  I need to edit them at least one more time.

*  Wrote two blog posts for the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog - one for the Newsletter and one for the Research Group summary.

*  Wrote a Surname Saturday post and a SNGF post.  Answered some email.  Then worked on Received my Mitochondrial DNA Test Results from Family Tree DNA.

*  Worked in the database for awhile - added some content and source citations for some Dill and other related families, from American Ancestors, Ancestry, and Find A Grave.

*  Went in at 5:20 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper, eat dinner, water the front plants.  Online at 6:20 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of and Eclectica posts, then worked in the database for 45 minutes.

*  Went in at 7:15 p.m. to watch the Padres game, and read my book.  Pads won 2-1 over D-backs, now 33-34, only 4 games out of first place.  We go on Saturday night.

*  Online at 9:30 p.m. to read, check Facebook, and write this post.

Genealogy today was 9.0 hours.  Blog posts written = 6.

My Genealogy Thursday - 13 June 2013

The days just seem to fly by - we're almost to the middle of June, for crying out loud (one of my father's favorite sayings!).

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1850 U.S. Census Record for Jonathan Oatley Family, and another one for next week.

*  Went off at 9:45 a.m. for my doctor visit - he was happy with 9 lb weight loss, but not too-high blood sugar.  Drat.  Told him my toes were numb, too.

*  Home by 10:45 a.m. to read, then finished up the first draft of my FamilySearch presentation (given on 22 June).

*  Had lunch, then worked in RootsMagic 6 and FS Family Tree some more, adding content to both, and finding sources for my database.  Wrote Adding Data to RootsMagic 6 While Enriching Data on FamilySearch Family Tree.  Continued working in RM6/FSFT on my Dill line.

*  Went in at 5:15 p.m. to watch TV news, eat dinner, then trimmed and mowed the back yard, and watered it too.

*  Online at 7:15 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, write two reviews for next week, and another blog post.  Then back to RM6/FSFT, and then tried to find sources for the events I added to the database.  Wrote this post.

*  Home by 3:30 p.m. to read, answer email, write Using RootsMagic 6 to Add a New Person to the FamilySearch Family Tree.  Worked in the FS Family Tree for awhile also.

*  Online at 6:15 p.m. and spent over 3 hours adding info, making corrections, etc. for the Nathan Gates family (including all 15 children and their spouses) in FamilySearch Family Tree using RootsMagic 6.  Added a few items from FamilySearch also, and found some of the dates/places on Ancestry and AmericanAncestors records.

*  Updated the Best Of post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Tuesday's Tip - Ancestry Anne's Presentation about Fold3.

*  Finished up the CVGS Newsletter and printed it off.  Had three inches to fill, and found that I had left out two news items submitted by members.  Glad I checked the file!

My genealogy days - Sunday and Monday, 2-3 June 2013

I got lazy last night and didn't journal...watched the Padres game until 11 p.m.

1)  Sunday, 2 June 2013:

*  Read email and blogs, and finished up the Best Of post.  Went off to church at 9:15 a.m.

*  Home at 11:30 a.m. and read, then watched TV, and noted that Best of the Genea-Blogs - 25 May to 1 June 2013 posted.

*  Worked on the CVGS Newsletter for two hours - about 50% done.  Need more content.

*  Wrote several posts for the time we're at Jamboree.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. for dinner, watched TV news, read the paper, and came back to the computer for awhile to do some random research.  Then the Padres game at 7:10, and watched until 11 p.m. Pads lost 7-4 to Toronto in 11 innings.  Rats.  Finished my book.  Used the phone to read email, blogs, FB.

Genealogy on Sunday was 5.0 hours.

2)  Monday, 3 June 2013:

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - Probate Records of Adam Mott (1596-1661) of Portsmouth, R.I.

*  Tuned in to Mondays with Myrt and was on the panel.  didn't contribute much, was able to talk about the FamilySearch land and probate collections.

*  Online again at 10:30 a.m., but didn't write anything.  Checked Ancestry, FamilySearch for new databases but not much of interest.  Did a little more in the FS Family Tree using RootsMagic.  Found that MyHeritage had found Record Matches for my second tree, so put some slides together for a blog post.

*  Tuned into the Ancestry telecon at 12:45 and it went until 2:30 p.m.  Some interesting features are coming, and some excellent ideas shared by the group with Ancestry.  Wait for it...

*  Finished my post on Finally Received Record Matches on MyHeritage.  Then wrote Do You Have Issues/Suggestions/Questions for Ancestry.com?

*  Did some random research in Ancestry and AmericanAncestors - added some content and sources.  Not many, though...took some time to find several bits of data to flesh out a couple.

*  Went in at 5:30 p.m. to have dinner, read the paper, and watch the news.  Online at 6:30 p.m. to add more to the CVGS Newsletter - now 75% done.

*  Padres game started at 7:10, so read a genealogy book, and then read Facebook, email, blogs on the phone and worked in Ancestry.  Had to log off and on (a challenge finding that).  Checked the MyHeritage app too and it doesn't show record matches yet.  Pads lost 2-1 to Dodgers, so now 26-31.

*  Online at 9:30 p.m.  to read, add to the Best Of post, and write this post.

Genealogy today was 10.0 hours.

Up early after a late night...Padres won 4-3 in 17 innings at 12:15 a.m. last night - I watched through the 15th.

*  Read email and blogs, and left at 7:45 a.m. for Marie Callenders for men's group Bible study breakfast.  Then out to Bonita library for the CVGS workshop.  Got there at 9:30 a.m., got my table set up, others arrived by 10 a.m.

*  Workshop was fun in the morning - got to work with a beginner with Mexican heritage, and we talked about the basics of genealogy research methodology, charts, home sources, online sources, and repository sources.  Saved some census records for her, and got into Ancestry trees and found her brother's son-in-law's tree with more info than she had.  Also got into FamilySearch for Sonora church records.

*  Went to McDonalds for lunch, splurged on a quarter pounder, drink and dipped cone.  I really miss ice cream!

*  Back to talk to others in the afternoon at the workshop, but got sleepy so left after 2 and dozed in my recliner for over an hour.

*  Finally read emails and blogs, and noted that Surname Saturday -- FOSTER (England > Colonial Massachusetts)SCGS Genealogy Jamboree - My Sunday Sessions and Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Create an Ancestral Name Acrostic posted.

*  Worked in FamilySearch Family Tree on the Norman Seaver family - merged his children, cleaned up place names and alternate names, etc.  This took almost two hours to do.

*  We had dinner after Linda dumped the casserole in the hot oven...spooned it up and ate it, then cleaned the oven a bit afterwards.  Also filled the bird feeders, and watered the front plants.

*  Watched the Padres game - beat Toronto again 4-3 in 9 innings this time.  Now 26-29.

*  Online at 10 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, answer email, make Amtrak reservations and San Jose reservations, check Facebook, and write this post.
