My Non-Geneaholic Sunday - 31 August 2014

It was not a good (or bad) genealogy day...just a typical summer Sunday in the genea-cave.  And the last day of August.  2014 is now two thirds gone, monthwise!  I need to start planning for 2015 trips, presentations, conferences, etc.

*  Read email and blogs, finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 24 to 30 August 2014 post.

*  We went off to church at 9:30 a.m., and home by 11:30 a.m.  Watched TV news while Linda did her thing on the computer.  Online briefly at 12:30 to read and add to the FGS post.

*  Went in at 1:10 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, take a nap.  Padres lost 7-1 to the Dodgers.  Drat.  Bullpen failed.

*  Online at 4:15 p.m. to read, then started the Amanuensis Monday post.

*  Went in for dinner at 5 p.m., watched TV news, watered the front year, and washed dishes.

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, then work in the FamilySearch Family Tree - ran into all kinds of roadblocks due to being unable to merge people.  Answered some email.  Checked Facebook.

*  Searched for something to write for Monday...finally did it.  Wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 5.0 hours.

My Non-Geneaholic Friday and Saturday - 29-30 August 2014

Between the grandgirls and the Padres games, I didn't get a whole lot done these two days.  Really, just blogging.

1)  Friday, 29 August 2014:

*  Read email and blogs on my phone, then noted that 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 35: #42 John Rich (1791-1868) posted. Not sure what I did the rest of the morning, besides take care of and play with the girls.

*  Researched and wrote Dear Randy: How Do I Cite an Online City Directory? and we took off at 1 p.m. to go to the financial advisor.  The girls went with us.  We were home by 3:15 p.m.

*  Answered email, and wrote Ancestry.com Mobile App Has New Features.  Wrote the Surname Saturday post.

*  We left at 5:15 p.m. for El Pollo Loco for dinner, and home by 7 p.m. in time for the Padres game.  Added to the Best Of and FGS posts.

*  Watched Padres game, went 12 innings - we won 3-2 over Dodgers, but it was 11:30 by the time it ended.  Didn't journal.  Genealogy today was about 5.0 hours.

2)  Saturday, 30 August 2014:

*  Got up late, and got the girls squared away, read email and blogs on my phone, then added to the Best Of and FGS posts.  Wrote the SNGF post.  noted that Surname Saturday - HILL (England to colonial Massachusetts) posted.

*  Got the girls packed up, and we left at 11:30 a.m. to meet Tami in Carlsbad to pass them back to her at In n Out.  We were home by 2 p.m.  Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - How Many Sarah LNU's Are in Your Genealogy Database? posted.

*  Went in and watched football, then news, and took a short nap.  We left at 3:45 p.m. for the trolley, and then to Petco Park for the Padres game.  We won 2-1 in 10 innings over the Dodgers, so now 64-70 on the season.

*  Home by 10 p.m. to read, check Facebook, and I'm tired!  Genealogy today was maybe 3.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Thursday - 28 August 2014

Only three more days left in August, where did this month go?  With the girls here this week, I don't have time to do any research, but I have some fun with them.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 229: Quaker Church Marriage Record for Thomas Gach and Elizabeth Bloodgood in 1721.

*  Took the girls to the library for reading books, then to Plaza Bonita for lunch, and the store to get the lemonade for Audrey's stand.  We got back about 1:30, and they went off with Linda to swim at 2:30 p.m.

*  Researched and wrote Use Descendancy View to See Record Hints, Research Suggestions and Data Problems on FamilySearch Family Tree.

*  Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of and FGS compendium posts, and worked a bit in the Hilperton records adding sources to the database.

*  At 5 p.m., Audrey and I went out and set up her lemonade stand.  I took a picture and put it on Facebook.  Several neighbors came by and bought lemonade, but she and Lauren drank some of the stock.  We left for dinner at 6 p.m., stopped at Lolita's for Linda, then Chik Fil A for the rest of us.  Home by 7:30 p.m.

*  Researched and wrote the 52 Ancestors post.  Got the girls into bed but not asleep yet.  Added to the Best Of and FGS posts, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 7.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Wednesday - 27 August 2014

This was a busy day with the grandgirls here and the CVGS program meeting.  I got some things accomplished, though!

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Ed and Janet and Fred and Betty - Post 322 for (Not So) Wordless Wednesday and FGS President D. Joshua Taylor Named Honorary Mayor of La Villita and "Hispanic Research Day in San Diego County" at San Diego Central Library on 6 September 2014 and set the last two for later in the day.  I also played a bit with the girls.

*  Packed up the laptop and the projector and off at 11 a.m. for McDonalds for lunch, and then to the library for the CVGS program meeting.  Helped Hal get set up, and he had a full 90 minutes for his British Research talk.  Excellent information and examples.

*  Home by 3 p.m. to read, then made the chart and wrote My Descent From William I "the Conqueror," King of England.  Added to the Best Of and FGS compendium posts too.

*  Went in to watch TV news, took a short nap, and we left at 6:15 p.m. for Subway and McDonalds for dinner.

*  Home by 7:30 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and put the trash out.  Switched over to WDYTYA? at 9 p.m., the Minnie Driver episode, and it was boring, so watched more of the Padres.  They won 3-2 in 10 innings over Brewers, so now 62-70.  Second half of WDYTYA? Minnie Driver episode was more interesting.

*  Online at 10 p.m. to read, add to the compendium and Best Of posts, check Facebook, and write this post.  Genealogy today was 7.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Tuesday - 26 August 2014

I'm back from Santa Cruz and the visit with my daughter and grandsons.  I got back on Monday afternoon, and we went to the Padres game Monday night, so I did nothing genealogy wise since Thursday except read email and blogs and edit some blog posts.

*  This morning, I read email and blogs, then wrote Tuesday's Tip - Check Out the WikiPedia List of Online Newspaper Archives and FamilySearch Obituary Collection is Expanding and set it for early afternoon.  Also started the FGS blog compendium post.

*  We left at 11:30 a.m. for Carlsbad to meet Tami and the grandgirls at In n Out for lunch.  We brought the girls home with use, and were home by 2 p.m.  I read, then went in and took a nap, while they went swimming with Linda.

*  We went to dinner at 5:15 p.m. to El Pollo Loco, and home by 6:30 p.m. Caught up on the Best Of and FGS posts.  Then in to watch the Padres game.  The girls finally went to bed about the time it was over at 10 p.m.  Pads won 4-1 over Brewers, so now 61-70 and still mired in third place in the West. We'll be lucky to win 76 games, I think.  Noted that FGS 2014 Conference Blog Compendium posted.

*  Online at 10 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of and FGS posts, and write this post.  Genealogy today was 4.5 hours.

Thursday, August 21, 2014

My Geneaholic Thursday - 21 August 2014

It was a stay-at-home day again, but the rest of the week won't be!  I'll be back on Monday...grandchildren are calling!

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 228: Quaker Church Birth Record for Martha Gach and research and wrote Family Trees on FindMyPast.com - Post 3: Source Citations and set it for later.  Major FAIL IMHO on that, but probably easy to fix.

*  Wrote a post for Friday, then wrote Best Way to Match Parents in FamilySearch Family Tree Using RootsMagic - Part 2 and set it for the afternoon.  Wrote a post for Saturday and one for Monday too.

*  Watched Russ's webinar on Find A Grave, answered email and read blogs, added to the Best Of blog, and then worked in the Quaker records some more - captured more images for ancestors, and added a bunch of source citations.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to eat dinner and watch TV news.  Back online at 5:30 p.m. to read, do more Quaker record source citations.  Went in at 7 p.m. to watch the Padres game.  Fast game, over by 9:30, Dodgers hit a 2-run homer in the 8th to win it 2-1.  Drat.  So now 59-67.

*  Online at 9:30 to read, check Facebook, and write this post,  Genealogy today was 10.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Wednesday - 20 August 2014

It seems like August just started, and now it's almost over.  Strange how time flies when you're having fun, isn't it?

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Uncle Ed and Aunt Janet Visit San Diego -- Post 321 for (Not So) Wordless Wednesday and Cyndi Ingle Featured at San Diego Genealogical Society Seminar on 27 September and set it for later.  Researched and wrote Family Trees on FindMyPast.com - Post 2: Navigation Aids and Profile Tabs and set it for mid-afternoon.

*  Left at 11 a.m. for McDonalds for lunch, then to the bank and the library - stopped to see John for awhile, then got the Computer Lab opened and set up the projector for the CVGS Computer Group.  We had only 8 in attendance, but I think they learned something.

*  Home by 2 p.m. to read, took a short nap at the desk, then helped Linda a bit with food for the pastor.  Wrote two Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe posts, and tried to work in AmericanAncestors but it was really slow.

*  Went in for dinner at 4:45 p.m., watched TV news.  Put out the trash too.  Online at 5:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, worked in Ancestry adding source citations for Seaver census records, and then worked in AmericanAncestors until 7:15 p.m. downloading images of vital record books for the Seaver line.

*  Went in at 7:20 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, then the AmericanAncestors magazine, and watched WDYTYA Kelsey Grammer episode.  Interesting trail he took - seemed mundane, but that's pretty much how all of mine is!  Watched the end of the Pdres game, we won 4-1 over Dodgers, so now 59-66.

*  Online at 10:15 p.m. to read, write this post, check Facebook, and done.  Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My Geneaholic Saturday - 16 August 2014

Didn't sleep well last night for some reason, so was tired today.  I need my 7 hours and can then go all day until about 11 p.m.

*  Read email and blogs quickly, then packed up and went off to the CGSSD meeting at UCSD in La Jolla.  Moderated the RootsMagic SIG meeting, then presented "Crafting Great Source Citations" to the assembled folks.  Not sure if this was a winner - lots of droopy eyes.  It was probably too detailed in the software section...oh well.

*  Home by 12:30, had lunch, read email and blogs, then noted that Surname Saturday - MAVERICK (England to colonial Massachusetts) and Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Genea-Bucket List posted.

*  Went in at 1:15 p.m. to watch TV and take a nap.  Back online at 2:45 p.m. to read, then downloaded several Middlesex County MA probate files for ancestors from AmericanAncestors.org.  Put them in the surname file folders.  Lots more of these to do!

*  Padres game started at 4:15, so read the paper, ate dinner, and Pads had just gone ahead 8-5 in the 7th inning when it rained.  A two hour delay, they won 9-5 over the Cards.  Now 58-64.

*  Online during the rain delay to add to the Best Of post, then added the Thomas Dudley line back to the royals.  Cool - now have three lines done.  I really need some scrolls made...

*  Checked Facebook, wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 8.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Wednesday - 13 August 2014

This was my CVGS Research Group day, so there was little time for research, especially with the Padres game and WDYTYA? tonight.
\
*  Read email and blogs, and wrote Visiting Jim and Gerry -- Post 320 for (Not So) Wordless Wednesday.  Discovered the Middlesex County, Mass. probates on AmericanAncestors.org, so wrote Middlesex County, Massachusetts Probate Records, 1648-1871, Now Available on AmericanAncestors.org and set it for later.  Wrote CGSSD Meeting on Saturday, 16 August: "Crafting Great Source Citations" and set it for early afternoon.  Blogging done for the day!

*  Packed up the laptop tablet, and off to McDonalds for lunch and then the library.  Stopped to see John for awhile, then got set up in the conference room for the Research Group meeting.  Laptop worked, tablet cell service worked, everything good.  Had 17 in attendance.  Laptop decided to update Windows at about 12:15 p.m. (second time this has happened...need to prevent that!) and I hemmed and hawed until it came back.  Showed them the Google Earth trick to find federal land plots.  Second hour was better with show and tell and research problems.

*  Home by 2:30 p.m. and sleepy, read, dozed off for about 10 minutes, then went in at 3:50 p.m. to watch the Padres game.  Read the paper, took a nap, ate dinner, put out the trash and washed dishes.  Pads won 5-3, so now 57-62, won 5 in a row, won 10 of 12.

*  Online at 7 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and do a little work in the Ha surnames on Ancestry adding content and sources.  Extended James' line one more generation with Hard surname.

*  Went in at 9 p.m. to watch Who Do You Think You Are?  Pretty pedestrian, I thought.  Came in at 10 p.m. to see if i'm related to Edward I...well, sure.  Even descended from if Gary Boyd Roberts is to be believed.  I do...

*  Wrote this post.  genealogy today was 8.0 hours.

*  Read email and blogs, then noticed that 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 32: #39 Sophia (Buck) (Brigham) (Newton) Stone (1797-1882) posted and wrote  Looking for United Empire Loyalist Ancestors and set it for later.

*  Got a comment from Ken on the latter post, and went looking for the land petitions at LAC and found the Abraham Dafoe one easily (because Ken gave me the link).  Looked for others and found all but two.  Will write about this next week.  Added some of the UELAC stuff to Notes.

*  Wrote Did You Miss These Genealogy Education Events This Week? and set it for later.

*  Did some research in Ancestry - found some useful content and added some sources.

*  Went in at 4 p.m. to watch the Padres game and read the paper.  Had dinner, washed dishes, and read my book.  Pads lost 2-1 to the Pirates.  Now 52-62 I think!

*  Online at 7 p.m. to read, then worked on the CVGS Newsletter - about 80% done now.  Have some half pages to fill.  Wrote the Surname Saturday post (and didn't date it correctly, so it posted) and the SNGF post.  I enjoyed that!

*  Checked in on Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 10.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Thursday - 7 August 2014

This was another all-genealogy day at home, except for the evening when I watched most of the Chargers-Cowboys game on TV.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 226: 1861 Marriage Record of "David Smith" and "Abigal Vanse."  Researched and wrote Answering Russ's Question: How Do I Enter Census Information in my Genealogy Management Program? and set it for later in the morning.

*  Answered several emails, and did some online work to find answers.  In the process, fixed one relationship and added some sources.  Found that I had not added several obituaries to my database (parents and grandparents, duh...) so I did that and sourced them.  That led to writing Dear Randy: How Do You Cite an Obituary on GenealogyBank?

*  Made a new Page for the 52 Ancestors posts, and updated my Presentations and Schedule pages too.

*  Worked on Sophia Buck's events and notes, and wrote the 52 Ancestors post for Friday.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV news, then eat dinner, and water the front yard.  Online at 6:15 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, and work on the CVGS Newsletter.  Got it framed and several articles in, but only about 25% done.

*  Went in at 7 p.m. to watch the Chargers-Cowboys game, read the paper, and then read my book.  Checked email and blogs at halftime, and went back to it in the 3rd period, and back online when it was no longer in doubt.

*  Online to read, check Facebook, and write this post.  Genealogy today was.  10.5 hours.

My Geneaholic Wednesday - 6 August 2014

This was an almost all genealogy day, but I did absolutely no research.

*  Read email and blogs, and wrote Climb Aboard the Swayback Randy Express -- Post 319 for (Not So) Wordless Wednesday and then SDGS Meeting on Saturday, 9 August Features Linda Serna and set it for later.

*  Printed off the Board stuff, and left at 11 a.m. for McDonald's for lunch, the bank for money, and then to the library.  Sat in John's group for awhile, then went to the Bored meeting before noon.  It was!

*  Home by 2:45 p.m. to read, then wrote Reader Comments on my GEDMatch Autosomal DNA Analysis Post.  Checked Facebook, answered some email.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV news, read the paper, eat dinner, put out the trash and wash the dishes.

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, then wrote two Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe posts.  Watched a bit of Wacky Wednesday too.

*  Went in at 8 p.m. to watch the Cynthia Nixon episode of WDYTYA? and then the McAdams episode.  Started to watch the Paltrow episode, but remembered I saw it before.

*  Online at 10:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post and write this post.  Genealogy today was 9.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Tuesday - 5 August 2014

It's still warm here in Chula Vista, high in the upper 80s, but some of the humidity is gone.  The fans work...

*  Read email and blogs, then researched and wrote Tuesday's Tip - Kentucky Resources on Family Search.

*  Worked in the database a bit, then watched Thomas MacEntee's webinar on Illinois Research, and edited my Sources presentation and handout again.  Noted that Finding a Family for Vernon R. Seaver (1923-1945) posted.  The Terminix guy came to spray the foundation.

*  Added more ancestors to Geni.com and connected them to the World Tree.  Captured some famous person relationship charts, and eventually wrote Is Every Famous Person My Relative?

*  Worked in the database adding about 20 Massachusetts vital record book media items and sources to the database.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the Padres game, eat dinner, read the paper, water the front yard, and finish my C J Box book.  Padres lost 3-1 on one bad pitch to the Twins.

*  Online at 8:30 p.m. to read, then work in the Gr surnames in Ancestry finding content and sources.  Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My Genealogy Sunday and Monday - 3 and 4 August 2014

The weather stayed warm - 85-90F and humid...fans, hair shirts, shorts are the dress code today.

1) Sunday, 3 August 2014

*  Read email and blogs, finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 27 July to 2 August 2014 post.

*  Off to church at 9:30 a.m., and home by 11:30 a.m.  Mouse wasn't working well, so went to Best Buy and got a wireless mouse.  Read email and blogs quickly!

*  Went in at 1:15 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and read my book.  We ate dinner in the 10th inning, Pads won 4-3 over Braves.  Now 51-60 on the year.

*  Went out and weeded the front planters - big job.  Still have to trim the roses.  We got some rain this day which made the soil damp.

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, then did the Amanuensis Monday transcription and post.  Finished up in Facebook, adding data for Gl-Go surnames using Ancestry.

*  Genealogy this day was 4.5 hours.

2)  Monday, 4 August 2014:

*  Read email and blogs, added to the Best Of blog, and noted that Amanuensis Monday - Post 229: 1869 Deed of Land in Taylor County, Iowa from Ranslow Smith to Harley U. Greenlee posted.

*  Joined the Mondays With Myrt HOA and shared a bit about the FS Family Tree Watch List, plus comments on other topics.

*  Checked Facebook, Ancestry, FamilySearch, but couldn't think of a blog topic.  Finally got into GEDMatch again and eventually wrote My First Look at GEDMatch Autosomal DNA Analysis.

*  Worked on American Ancestors finding and downloading and renaming vital record pages for ancestors in the Whitney ancestry.  Got about 40.  Now need to add them to the media file.

*  Went in for dinner at 5 p.m., read the paper, watched TV, did the dishes.  Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, and write a post for Tuesday.

*  Spent two hours or so searching for ancestors of loose Seavers - found two, but not one more.  Added some new Seaver families with some sources.

*  Checked Facebook, then wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 11.5 hours.

My Geneaholic Saturday - 2 August 2014

Had  a choice to make today - glad I chose the Tom Jones webinar over the CVGS workshop on Research Trips.  Stayed in because it lightly rained all afternoon, but dried out.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Surname Saturday - GOODRICH (England > colonial Connecticut) and then Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Survey of Genealogy Activities.

*  Registered for the webinar, then added media and source citations for some of the Mass vital records data I've downloaded over the past week.

*  Watched and listened to the Tom Jones webinar, but got dozy in the middle of it.  Interesting examples. Printed off the syllabus.

*  Worked for over an hour in FamilySearch Family Tree watching more persons.

*  Worked in the database adding media and source citations, and then went hunting for more on Ancestry and American Ancestors.

*  Went in at 5:40 p.m. to watch the Padres game, eat dinner, read the paper, and read my CJ Box book.  Read email, blogs and Facebook around 9 p.m.  Game went 12 innings with Padres winning 3-2 over the Braves, ending at 10:20 p.m.  Venable got the Gatorade shower.

*  Online to check email and blogs, added to the Best of post, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My Geneaholic Friday - 1 August 2014

This was an eventful day, and I did some genealogy research, but then spent the evening at the ballpark.

*  Read email and blogs, and wrote and posted 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 31: #38 Thomas J. Newton (ca 1800 - ????).  That took awhile!

*  Researched and wrote Checking My Watch List on FamilySearch Family Tree and set it for early afternoon.  Done with blogging for the day!

*  Captured some Massachusetts tan book records from Ancestry for the Nathan Gates line.  Also listed Nathan Gates land deeds in Worcester County, Mass.  Only 19 of them.

*  Captured more Canadian census records for Frederick Sovereign and added facts, media and sources to the database.  Looked for a death record but didn't find one for Frederick.

*  We left at 4:15 p.m. for the Padres game, stopped to get Linda dinner at El Pollo Loco, and were in Petco by 5:40 p.m.  We were invited by our financial advisor to their party in Kona Cove, so we had free hot dogs, chips, popcorn, peanuts and soft drinks as part of the deal.  The game turned out well, Pads beat the Braves 10-1, so now 49-60 on the year.

*  We left in the 7th inning, got the 10 p.m. trolley, and were home by 10:40 p.m.  Checked email and blogs, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 8.0 hours.
