Randy's genealogy day - 31 July 2011

July is done...31 days of relative coolness here in Chula Vista, with high temps here in the 75 to 80F range all month, and relatively low humidity.

*  Read email and blogs, and finished off the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 24-30 July 2011 post.

*  got cleaned up and off to church at 9:30 a.m.  Home by 11:30 a.m. to join in on Scanfest.  Decided to scan some photos from the Norway 1999 album.  Got about 35 photos done then had lunch.  Came back to it, but heart wasn't in it.

*  We left at 1:45 p.m. for church for the Ice Cream Social and Choir Sing.  Had a good time, but almost fell asleep in the first part.  The ice cream was good too.

*  Home by 4 p.m. to see very end of Padres game (Pads won 8-3, now 47-62 on season).  Traded Mike Adams (a mistake, I think) and Ryan Ludwick (no big deal).  Online to answer email and read.

*  Went in for dinner at 5:45 p.m., and back online by 6:30 p.m.

*  Worked in FTM doing [unmentionable tasks] and [maybe more later].  Subscribed to the FTM-TECH mailing list.

*  Started the next Best Of post, and posted SNGF "Genealogy OCD" Compendium.

My genealogy day - 30 July 2011

Happy 92nd birthday to my mother, Betty Virginia (Carringer) Seaver (1919-2002).

*  Up early, read email but not blogs.  Off for 7 a.m. breakfast for Linda's swim club.  Got to parking garage by 8:30 a.m. and waited for CVGS research group carpoolers.  We left at 9 a.m. and had 10 go in three cars.

*  To Carlsbad Library by 9:45 a.m., and group met with Mary Van Orsdol on the second floor for briefing and demonstration of Book Scanner.  That was cool.  I'll blog about it later.  Found several family history books I hadn't seen, and copied pages on the book scanner.  Also copied pages from periodicals on my to-do list.  Checked the to-do list for books I want to peruse, but they had none on my list.

*  Checked online and noted that Surname Saturday - PEIRCE (England > Massachusetts) and Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Signs You Have GOCD posted.

*  We left at 2 p.m. ,and I was home by 3.  Read everything, and then downloaded the 1278 scanned pages onto my computer files.  Went in at 4 p.m. to get ready for the Padres game.  We left at 4:10, got the 4:30 trolley, and there by 5 p.m. Had a Filippi's pizza slice for dinner, then my swirl soft ice cream cone.  Padres lost 10-6 to Rockies after leading 4-3 after 5 innings.

*  Home by 9:45 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Google Plus and Facebook, and write this post.

My genealogy day - 29 July 2011

Friday was pretty much an all-genealogy day for me...

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Follow Friday - This Weekend's Genealogy Fun

*  Researched and wrote Ancestry.com: "You don't even have to know what you're looking for..." - Post 2.  Talked to my daughter, and had lunch.

*  Looked through the FGS FORUM magazine and NEHGR journal for books to look for at Carlsbad. Updated my books/journals to review list.  Went through my research notebook and reorganized it a bit.  Added resources used to my surname list.

*  Answered some email, looked through Google Plus posts, checked Facebook.  Wrote The Joseph Payson Problem - Post 3.  Posted Program Summary - John Kracha on "Central European Genealogy."

*  Went in for dinner at 5:30, and back online by 6.    Did some research on my daughter's in-laws ancestry, can't find the grandparents anywhere online.  They are well hidden.

*  Enjoyed the Geneabloggers Radio show, listening and chatting.

*  Went in at 8:30 to watch the rest of the Padres game.  They lost to the Rockies 3-2.

*  Online at 10 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, write the SNGF post, and write this post.

My genealogy day - 28 July 2011

The genealogy was split asunder by the Padres game today.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 75: Harry Seaver's Death Certificate.  Got cleaned up.

*  Researched and wrote Ancestry.com: "You don't even have to know what you're looking for..." - Post 1.

*  We left at 11:25 a.m. for the trolley to go to the Padres game.  Pads beat the Snakes 4-3 (now 46-60 on the year).  Stopped at Rubio's for dinner.

*  Home by 5:30 p.m. to read, then write post for CVGS blog - but it didn't publish for some reason.  Blogger acted strange.  Hope it's still there.

*  Wrote a post for Saturday, which is going to be busy!  Wrote email to CVGS research trip goers.  Checked Google Plus.  Added to the Best Of post.  Checked the Unclaimed Persons forum for updates.  That group is doing wonderful work.  Reviewed three cases and love the resources.  Need to investigate more.  Wish I could participate too.

*  Checked in on Facebook, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 27 July 2011

Wednesday was another full genealogy day, including the CVGS program meeting and lots of blogging.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 163: Lyle and Emily Wedding Photo.  Researched and wrote  California Voter Registers, 1866-1898 on Ancestry.com and set it for later in the morning.

*  got cleaned up, checked Google Plus, got a phone call from Ben asking about Nevada birth certificates and how to get his.  Finally sent him to VitalChek.  Had lunch.

*  Packed up my stuff and off to the library at 11:30 a.m.  CVGS meeting started at 12 noon, and ended at 2 p.m.  John Kracha did a nice job with Central European Genealogy.  Tough subject and research.

*  Home by 2:30 p.m. to read, then researched and wrote The Joseph Payson Problem - Part 2.  More genealogy fun there!  Answered some emails, checked Facebook.

*  Went in at 5:15 to watch TV, eat dinner, watch more TV, take out the trash, water the front plants, then back online at 6 to add sources and notes to the database, finishing off the TGM v6 sketches I copied last week.

*  Watched the Padres game, lost again 4-3 to Snakes.  15 under .500 for first time this season (45-60). Drat.  Trades coming soon!

*  Online again at 9:45 p.m. to read, update the Best Of post, then write this post.

Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My genealogy day - 26 July 2011

The sands of July time are almost gone...and this was the first day in two weeks that I was able to stay home and do genealogy all day.

*  Read my email and blogs, then wrote Tuesday's Tip - Check Leland's FamilySearch Collections Lists Often.  Answered some emails and sent one out for the CVGS Research Trip on Saturday, and got cleaned up.

*  Worked through the FHC film ordering and wrote Online Family History Library Microfilm Ordering is Coming.  Read the July 2011 NEHGR issue in PDF format and saved it.

*  Worked a bit on the Joseph Payson problem from email, and had lunch.  Myra called about her research problem, and we talked through it.  She needs a Detroit obituary and death certificate.

*  Back to work on the Payson problem.  found lots of good stuff in the NEHGS site, and finally entered family data into the database, on the theory that someone else may benefit from it even though it's not my line.  Wrote The Joseph Payson Problem - Part 1.

*  Dinner time, then mowed the front lawn, and read for 30 minutes before the Padres game at 7.

*  Watched the game, read the paper, watered the back yard, finished my Michael Palmer book, and read another bit in the NGSQ that came the other day.  Padres lost 6-1 to the Snakes and it wasn't that close.

*  Online to read, then update the Best Of post, check Facebook and google Plus, and write this post.

Genealogy today was 10.5 hours today.

My Genealogy Day - 25 July 2011

This was a fairly full genealogy day - the first one in about 9 days!  Padres won too, 5-4 over Phillies (now 45-58).

*  Read email and blogs, and posted The "Where I'm From" Poem (for SNGF) Compendium and then "Raking the Ashes" Book on Pre-1906 San Francisco Records Published.

*  Got cleaned up, gathered the laptop, flash drive and handouts, and off at 9:15 a.m. to teach my OASIS class.

*  All set up by 10 a.m., class over at 12:30 p.m.  Lots of questions today, they're getting it, but are easily confused by online databases.   Ancestry.com is very complex and FamilySearch is confusing.  I understand why Ancestry has a fairly simple Basic search form!  Lots of confusion over what's free and what isn't on Ancestry.

*  Stopped at McDonalds for lunch, home by 1:15 p.m. Answered some email.  Read Google Plus and blogs.  Wrote Amanuensis Monday - Widow's Pension Allowed in Joseph Oatley's Revolutionary War Pension File.

*  Wrote Dear Ancestry: Please Fix Family Tree Maker Source Issues.  Dinner time - did some chores, watched TV news, read the paper, more chores.

*  Online after 6:45 p.m. to read, then worked in the database adding info from four sketches in The Great Migration.  Edited a few existing sketches too, and added sources.

*  Updated the Best Of post, then went through Indiana Marriages from FamilySearch and added some to database for Seaver families, with sources.  Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was  10.5 hours.

My family history day - 24 July 2011

Today marked the end of the grandgirls 8-day stay at Grandma and Grandpa Camp.  They loved it, we loved it, we're tired out.

*  Got the girls fed and dressed and entertained, but had no computer time before church.

*  Back from church at 11:30 a.m. to read email and blogs, finish off the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 17 to 23 July 2011 post, and eat lunch and get the girls down for naps.

*  Watched some of the Padres game (a 5-3 loss to the Phillies), then watched TV news, read the paper and took a nap.  Answered some emails and read blogs.

*  Packed up the car, and we left at 5 p.m. for El Pollo Loco for dinner, then to the airport to pick up Tami and James.  Their plane was 45 minutes late.  The girls were excited to see them, and vice versa.  They left for home from the airport.

*  We were home by 7:45.  Read email and blogs, started the next Best Of post, wrote a post for Monday morning, then the CVGS Program on Wednesday 27 July - John Kracha on "Central European Genealogy" post.

*  Ran through the OASIS Class 3 presentation again, copied files to flash drive and Google Docs, and ready for Monday class.  Added new blogs to my Google Reader.

*  Checked Google Plus, Twitter, Facebook, and wrote this post.

*  Went in to watch TV news and take a nap too.  Printed off my handouts for the last two OASIS classes and took them to UPS Store for copies.

*  Girls up to watch TV and play outside, then off to Oggi's for dinner.  Home by 7 p.m. to watch end of Padres game, listened to Geneabloggers Radio show, then put girls in bath and down to bed.

My genealogy days - 20 and 21 July 2011

Two days here, since I was late getting home last night from the OC.  We still have the grandgirls so I've done little else but read and blog a little this week.

1)  Wednesday, 20 July:

*  Got the girls fed and dressed ready for their swimming lesson with Linda, and off they went at 8:45 a.m.  Read my email and blogs, posted "Searching Ancestry.com Effectively" Presentation at GSNOCC Tonight!  Wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 162: Betty and Nana and set it for late morning.

*  Got cleaned up, gathered my laptop, my flash drives, my research notebook, made my maps, and left at 10:30 a.m. for Orange county.

*  Got to Orange by noon, ate lunch at McDonalds and got gas, then went to the Orange FHC.  Found some useful books and copied some pages from them.  Wrote Iowa State Picnic for Southern California on August 6, 2011 while there.

*  Left at 4 p.m. to go to Keno's Restaurant to meet the GSNOCC folks for dinner.  We had 9, and great conversation.  Left there at 6:10 p.m. to go to the Yorba Linda Community Center for the GSNOCC meeting.

*  Got there easily, and got set up.  It was in a different room than usual, so the logistics were messed up.  Had to get almost everyone on one side of the room because the cable length from computer to projector was short.  After the business meeting, I spent 70 minutes on "Searching Ancestry.com Effectively."

*  Had a snack, answered questions, and left at 9:30 p.m. for home.  Got home at 11 and was in bed by 11:10 p.m. - pooped.  No Journal!

Genealogy today was 6.5 hours.

2)  Thursday, 21 July 2011:

*  Girls slept in until 7:30 a.m., and got them fed and dressed for swimming and out the door by 8:45 with Linda.

*  Read my email and blogs. Wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 74: James Richmond's Death Certificate before the girls came home at 10:30 a.m.

*  Went in to watch the Padres game (they won 5-3 over Marlins), read the paper, and take a nap.  The girls were up by 3:30 and we left at 4 p.m. to go to In 'n Out for dinner, then to Reuben Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park.  The girls had great fun in the Kids Zone.

*  Home by 7:30 for dessert, then baths, and bedtime, and they're still up at 10:20 p.m.  Checked Facebook and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 4.5 hours.

My family history day - 18 July 2011

Not much of a genealogy day, but I sure had lots of fun.

*  Got the grandgirls fed and dressed and entertained, and managed to read email and blogs before I had to leave.  Noted that 1940 Census Enumeration District Maps Online at NARA Website.

*  Linda took the girls to a friend's pool to swim, and I left at 9:15 for the OASIS class in Mission Valley.  Everyone showed up and were pretty enthusiastic, although not everyone did their homework.  Got through demo of RootsMagic data entry and the LearnWebSkills.com site demonstrations and practice.  Talk too much, and they had too many questions.

*  Stopped off at McDonalds for lunch on the way home and home by 1:30 p.m. to find Audrey down for her nap and Lolo watching TV.  Quickly read everything, and posted FamilySearch Collection Navigation Hints.

*  Audrey up while I was trying to nap, and we all went outside at 4:30 to work (me) or play (the girls) in the front yard.  I trimmed rose bushes and weeded the beds, they ran around burning energy.

*  Dinner at 5:30 at home, then back outside for more work and play.  Finally in at 7 for dessert and TV, and then bath and bed.  Lolo went easily, Audrey is still chattering away at 10 p.m.

*  Online finally to read, add to the Best Of post, write a post for Tuesday, and write this post.

Genealogy today was maybe 4.0 hours at most.

Tomorrow is Sea World...

*  Wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your "Heritage Pie" Chart and made my Heritage Pie chart, and set the post for noon time.  Had a great response!

*  Had lunch, and went off to the bank at 12:15, then to Bonita Library for the CVGS Workshop on the Carlsbad Library Resources with Mary Van Orsdol.  Disappointing attendance, and had to help set up the projector.  Posted several items on Google+ during the talk, and took notes on the laptop.

*  Home at 3 p.m. to find the grand-girls taking naps.  After they got up, we played a bit, then I took a nap!  I weeded out front while waiting for the dinner call, and Tami and James treated us to dinner at Cheesecake Factory.

*  Watched the Women's World Cup game, then the Padres game.  Bad day for both teams.

*  Girls up by 3:30 p.m., set up the water slide on the front lawn and they had a blast sliding into a very shallow pond.  They loved it!  Dinner at 5 p.m., then played a bit with them, baths at 7 p.m. and bed at 8 p.m.

*  Read, worked on a post for Monday, checked Google+ and Facebook, and wrote this post.

Genealogy on Sunday was maybe 3.5 hours at most!

*  Revised my Searching Ancestry.com presentation and syllabus for next week at GSNOCC.

*  Wrote Dear Randy: Are There Ethical Standards for Genealogical Research?

*  Did some JMSeaver family research - found some articles about JMS escapades that I hadn't seen before.  Transcribed them into his notes.  That will be another Seaver series, I think!

*  Called for dinner at 5:30 p.m. and watched TV news after, then on line at 6:30 to read, and joined Geneabloggers Radio at 7 p.m.  It went until 9 p.m.

My genealogy day - 13 July 2011

This was a very full genealogy day, and I got quite a bit accomplished...my to-do list is almost all crossed off and maybe I can do some research and database work soon!

*  Up early again, read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 161: Emily Auble at age 17 and then CGSSD Meeting on Saturday, 16 July on "Photo Dating" and set it for late morning.

*  Wrote the Graveyard Rabbit Journal article and sent it off to Robin.  Cross that off!  A day late, but ...

*  Did quite a bit on Google Plus, installed my webcam - it worked flawlessly (check off!), and had a Hangout with Pam and Lee and Lorine.  Too much fun, had to leave it to get lunch, gather my stuff, and off to the library for the CVGS Research Group meeting.

*  Got there by 11:50, some already there.  got my laptop set up, and Gary came with the projector just in time.  We had 15 attendees, and showed the Google for Genealogists webinar video on CDROM.  (Check off!). The group likes the webinar idea, especially that we can stop and discuss it occasionally. Stayed after to work with Myrna on PowerPoint slides for her family reunion, and work with Sam on what research steps he should pursue.  Geneablogger Yvette was at the meeting - nice to meet her!

*  Home by 2:45 p.m. Read everything, checked in on G+, looked at several possible blog-worthy sites, finally wrote FGS 2011 Conference Social Media Policy. (Check off)

*  Linda called for dinner, so we ate, then I put out the trash and mowed and trimmed the back yard using the new weed-eater.  Almost broke it...gotta avoid thick weed stalks and hard objects like flower pots. (Check off)

*  Finally back online at 7:30 p.m. to read, posted What do they say about Geneology on Twitter?, wrote the SDGS 7/9 program summary (check off), and wrote four posts for the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog, including CVGS Saturday Workshop on 16 July - "Genealogy Researching at the Carlsbad Library." *  Talk started at 10:20, done by 11:20, some good questions, and off to lunch with Pauline, Jack and Bobbie for burgers and chips.  Headed for home at 1 p.m., home by 1:45 p.m.

*  got to Macy's and the OASIS class by 9:30 a.m., got set up, had to download Adobe Reader to the new OASIS laptop, and greeted my students as they came in after 10 a.m.  An interesting mix of heritages!

*  Left at 12:15 p.m., ate lunch at McDonalds, then to the UPS Store to make the 40 copies of the CVGS Newsletter, and mail 27 of them.

*  Home by 1:30 p.m. to read, and noted that Amanuensis Monday - Marriage Deposition in Joseph Oatley's Revolutionary War Pension File posted on schedule.

*  Online at 3:30 to read, then sent CVGS Newsletter to members, printed off pages to copy, made the mailing labels, and I'm all set.  More Google+.

My genealogy day - 9 July 2011

Blogged a little, did some research, went to the SDGS meeting, watched the Padres game, took my wife to Lolita's for dinner, and finished up my monthly CVGS newsletter.

*  Read email and blogs, finished up the Surname Saturday - ROLFE (England > MA > NJ > NY) post and wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Elevator Speech and set it for after noon.

*  got cleaned up and left at 9:10 a.m. for the  SDGS meeting in La Mesa, even served up the ice cream since I'm a social network type of guy.  Had only two scoops and two toppings - blew my diet again.

*  Home by 12:30 p.m. to read, put a bunch of folks in my Google+ Circles, then went in to watch the Padres game.  They lost 1-0 in bottom of the ninth to the dodgers, and blew the no-hitter with two out in the ninth too.  Aaarrrrgggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

*  Worked on finding the George W. Seaver families in the census records and added some to my database with source citations.

*  Took Linda to Lolita's for dinner, then home to work on the CVGS Newsletter.  Got it almost done - have had some late info tonight.

My genealogy day - 8 July 2011

Not much of a genealogy day - punctured by necessary chores, going out to dinner, and the Padres game.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Genea-Blogging Works - more help from my readers.  Got cleaned up, and wrote This Weekend's Genealogy Internet Radio Shows and set it for after noon.

*  Linda called that Barbara needed help, so went off to try to remove a stuck light fixture.  Failed, but had a nice snack.  Then to the bank and the UPS Store to print my first two OASIS syllabi.  Then to Home Depot to get a track light, a weedeater, an extension cord and wall paint to cover the graffiti.  Didn't get the latter!

*  Home by 12 noon to have lunch, and read, work in google+, and answer some email.  The mail came and we need a smog check, so took the car down.

*  Back by 2 p.m. to read some more, added another Seaver line to the database, and at 5 p.m. we left for dinner at Oggi's, followed by a Wal-Mart shopping spree.

*  Home at 7 p.m. to tune in to Geneabloggers Radio and chatted through the show.  good interviews.  Then in to watch the Padres game (lost to Dodgers 1-0).  Drat.

*  Online at 9:45 to read, add to the Best Of post, and write this post.

Another stay-at-home day, and another Padres game.  Sigh.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote What's on My Bookshelf? and then got cleaned up.  Wrote Using the Relationship Finder on WikiTree and set it noon time.

*  Had lunch, then worked a bit more on the presentations.  Answered some email, wondered about another blog post.  Read Amy's post and posted Amy Coffin Rocks the Geneablogger World to get the word out.

*  Worked in Google Plus, then Facebook and Twitter.  Remembered that I needed to do the CVGS Newsletter this weekend, so got started on it and got to the point where I'm waiting for content from the Board members.  Corrected some place names in RootsMagic database.

*  Went in at 5:30 to eat dinner, watered the front plants, and came back at 6:30 to read, then see how Blogger has changed.  Yikes! Pretty different - but manageable I think.  Lots of folks will complain!

*  Went in at 7:15 to watch the Padres game.  Watered the back yard in between innings.  Padres lost 2-1 to Giants, so now 40-49 and 10 games out of first.  goodbye Heath Bell, Ryan Ludwick, and maybe others.

My genealogy day - 2 July 2011

It was a pretty full genealogy day with lots of variety - and my Padres won too.

*  Read email before going to the Mem's Bible Study breakfast at 8 a.m.   Home by 9:30 a.m. and noted that Surname Saturday - KINNAN (NJ) posted while I was gone, then fixed the typos.

*  Wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Genea-Bucket List and set it for later.

*  Tuned into the MySociety Radio show and chatted until 12 noon.  Then watched the Google for genealogists webinar on the Legacy CD.  Noted that SNGF posted, and tweeted it.  Had lunch, then proofed my FGS FORUM column.

*  I heard Find-a-Grave beckoning me again, so I gleefully found Auble and Carringer data and entered them into my database.  Answered some email, worked on Remley data in the database, and looked at Brad's pictures.  Worked on MJN's Dale Evans problem - think I found her, is it the right family?

*  Recalled that I had to update the Ancestry.com presentation for 20 July...so started in on that.  I have to cut out about half of the slides I had from the previous pitch because of time constraints.

*  Called for dinner at 5 p.m., then read the paper, watched the news and filled the bird feeder.  Back online at 6 p.m. to work on the Ancestry.com presentation.

*  Went in at 7:10 p.m. to watch the Padres game, finish the paper, water the back yard and finish my Vince Flynn book.  A good one!  Padres won 1-0 over Mariners (no now 38-46, 8-2 in last 10).
