Randy's Genealogy Day - 31 January 2010

It was a decent genealogy Sunday - did more than usual because there was no Chargers game or Padres game on TV.

* Read email, blogs and Twitter before getting cleaned up. Chronicling Jeremiah and Rosalie - Part 2 (written last night) posted before we went to church. Before we went to church, searched the treasure box for photos that need to be scanned, and took a three-inch stack out of the box.

* Home from church at 11:20 a.m., and joined the Scanfest in progress. Could never get the CoverItLive producer thing to work, so used Miriam's blog to enter my chat comments. Worked the scanner while chatting and finding YouTube videos of 50s-60s rock music, had a great time. Got about 100 photos scanned in 65 TIFF files (440 mb total) - need to separate them and crop them and name them appropriately. Scanfest was over at 2 p.m., but I scanned until 2:30.

* While in Scanfest chat, Best of the Genea-Blogs - January 24-30, 2010 posted (written last night, edited this morning).

* Edited my OASIS "Beginning Computer Genealogy" handout and presentation, and printed sufficient copies for the class which starts on Monday. Checked in on Facebook.

* Tami came, and we left at 4:45 p.m. to go to dinner at Rubio's. Michelle and Randy have had the grandgirls for two days, so they met us and we had an hour with Lolo and Audrey. They ate well, and were happy to see us. Tami took the girls home and we were home by 6:30 p.m. Watched some of the Pro Bowl game while Linda was on computer.

* Back online at 7:30 p.m., read everything, transferred data to two flash drives for the OASIS class. Wrote two posts for Monday, since I have to leave by 9 a.m. to the car dealer and then OASIS classroom. Wrote this post, and just realized I missed Desperate Housewives again. Drat.

Genealogy today was 7.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.0 hours writing blog posts, 2.5 hours on Scanfest, and 1.0 hour working on OASIS class stuff.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 30 January 2010

Stayed home today and got some genealogy tasks, and some family tasks, completed. Then blogged the night away!

* We left at 6:50 a.m. for breakfast with Linda's swim club at Carrows - we were home by 8:30 a.m.

* Read email, blogs and Twitter, and noted that Surname Saturday - KNAPP had posted.

* Decided to work on planning my next research tasks for the Devier Smith and Samuel Vaux problems. Made a to-do list for both families, and collected FHLC entries for the counties they lived in.

* Ate lunch at home, then balanced the checkbook and got the 2009 financial stuff in file folders and sorted out in MS Money. While I did this, Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Make a Calendar! posted.

* Back to genealogy work at 2:30 p.m. - wrote El Cajon Cemetery Listings Online and then worked in database checking names, dates, places and sources from the Marston Watson book on Thomas Dudley descendants. Checked in on Facebook, and then transcribed will of John Kenyon (died 1831 in Sterling CT) into database - not quite finished.

* Went in at 5:15 p.m. to watch news, read paper, eat dinner, wash dishes, etc. Back online at 7:15 p.m. to read everything.

* Wrote SNGF - Creating Ancestral Birthday Calendars, then Best of Genea-blogs post set for Sunday noon, then the next Chronicling post set for Sunday morning, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 9.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blog posts, 0.5 hour reading Twitter/Facebook, 2.5 hours planning research, 2.5 hours working in database, and 2.5 hours writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 29 January 2010

Some blogging, some walking, some database entry, some researching, a minor emergency, dinner out, and rest and relaxatiuon made for a decent genealogy day here at the Genealogy Cave.

* Read email, blogs and Twitter, then wrote Follow Friday - ThinkGenealogy and Scott Brown a distant cousin of Barack Obama too! Did some research to see if I'm related to Scott Brown - of ocurse I am, we're New England distant cousins several times over. Did some online research on the Staten Island French families - found some transcribed wills and other data.

* Got cleaned up, and left for lunch at Costco and a walk with George on the bayfront - nice day - about 65 F with no wind, and we watched a loud cigar boat on the bay go about 30 knots. Was home by 1 p.m.

* Read everything, then wrote Using the Library of Congress "Chronicling America" Site and did some research in newspapers, census records and city directories to see if I could find more info about Jeremiah and Rosalie McKnew. I did.

* Linda came home, turned on the washing machine and we had water all over the garage floor. Checked the hoses and they were OK, and water came from under the machine. Called repair shop, they came within one hour and had it fixed in 20 minutes - a broken pump. Pretty efficient, but costly.

* Worked in database to try to sort out the blended family of John and Elizabeth Pers of Watertown. When I combined databases, the children of Thomas and Elizabeth Pierce of Woburn got put into John Pierce's family because they both had a child named Robert Pierce married to a Mary Knight, and with the same death date. That wasn't right, and I needed to separate them. Got out my Pierce papers and figured out who belonged where, detached some folks, attached others, deleted some, and finally got them right - at least that Robert Pierce doesn't have two sets of parents now!

* Went out to Rubios for dinner. Saw the girls 6th grade teacher and showed her their wedding and kids pictures. Need to update my wallet pix!!!

* Back home at 6:30 p.m., and finished up the Pierce problem, read everything, then wrote Chronicling Rosalie and Jeremiah - Part 1. Wrote two blog posts for Saturday, then wrote thisp ost, and will check Facebook posthaste.

Genealogy today was 9.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.5 hours doing online research, 0.5 hour doing software things, 2.0 hours working in the database, and 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 28 January 2010

A pretty good genealogy day - blogged a bit, worked in the database a lot, reduced my "to enter" file by about a half inch, and found some interesting items in newspapers.

* Read everything, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Kemp Bible typescript 1 and got cleaned up. Researched and wrote Genealogy Presentations on Slideshare.net then had lunch at home. Thought about going for a walk...

* Worked in the database all afternoon, burning down by "to be entered" file by about 0.5 inch, plus adding source citations, getting sources out of locality fields and eliminating duplicate people. Added some of the LaTourette/Poillon/Crocheron people from early NYC to the database using a WorldConnect sourced database. Need to find the sources, of course! Pretty soon it was 5 p.m.

* Watched TV, read the paper, ate dinner. Back online at 6:30 p.m.

* Read everything, browsed Chronicling America and found a Devier J. Smith delinquent tax notice so blogged about it in My Smiths owed tax money! Browsed some more for McKnew in Washington DC and found three articles about death of Rosalie McKnew, 3rd wife of Jeremiah McKnew. She had 4 kids by Jeremiah, which was news to me. Found 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1900 census entries for these folks (no 1880, wonder where they are?) and entered them into the database.

* Checked in on Facebook, Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 11.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 2.0 hours doing online research, and 5.0 hours working in the database.

My right upper arm hurts again - not bad, but a warning that I'm mousing too much. Probably ap inched nerve in shoulder. That's what it was last time. Need to exercise more and mouse/key less.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 27 January 2010

Not a great genealogy day - some blogging, no research, no database, CVGS program, some reading, that's it in a nutshell.

* Read everything and posted a cute picture in (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 88: Randy Smiling, then wrote Using the Rootsweb Surname List before getting cleaned up.

* Checked out Ancestry databases, copied Family History Fair forms, packed up my bag and left at 11 a.m. for lunch. Off to McDonalds, the post office and then the library.

* CVGS Program Meeting started at 12 noon, had 32 there, had long business meeting then Susi gave her talk. Over after 2:15, finally home at 3 p.m. Posted "Faces of America" on PBS starting 10 February and wrote another for posting later.

* Read everything, then read new Internet Genealogy magazine in PDF format, and posted Escondido Family History Fair on March 6.

* In to watch news, read paper, have dinner, then watched Obama State of the Union speech. Ho hum. oh well. More of the same - all talk, little action.

* Back to work at 7:30 p.m., read everything, checked Facebook, then wrote "Searching the Past, Looking to the Future" Program Summary, washed dishes, and then this post.

Genealogy today was 9.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.5 hours at CVGS meeting, 1.0 hour reading magazine, and 4.0 hours writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 26 January 2010

An interesting day - stayed home and played genealogy most of the day. Got a lot done in my database, but still lots more to do!

* Read email, blogs and Twitter then researched and wrote Tombstone Tuesday - John Cooke (1607?-1695) - Mayflower Passenger. Wrote FGS FORUM Magazine - Winter 2009 Issue - and a Discount Deal and set it to post at noon. Got cleaned up.

* Worked on database checking data against Sam's data for the common families, and adding sources and revising notes as I went. Lots of English baptisms and burials in the immigrant families need to be "fixed" - the baptisms don't show up in the Born spot unless you put them in, same with Burials and Died spot - so double entered with a source citation so that they show up in lists and charts. Worked right through lunch...

* Had quick lunch, continued database work. Probably added 300 sources or more today. Checked in on Facebook, saw that Ancestry might have moved historical books around, but didn't see that they had. Searched in the Books, and found The Great Migration Begins. Wow - all of the sketches. Wrote "The Great Migration Begins" is on Ancestry.com. Compacted the FTM 16 database. Did a source report too - 342 pages.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to read paper, watch TV, eat dinner, and we delivered dinner to the Trevinos tonight. Home by 7:30. Read everything. Checked online databases at Access Genealogy and Family Tree Legends. Tested family tree and social network sites - some have gone under, others have not added much since last check in mid 2009. Frustrating. There are no "wonderful" family tree sites that do everything I want, and do it quickly.

* Wrote this post and done for the night.

Genealogy today was 11.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.0 hours writing blog posts, 1.0 hour in online databases, 1.5 hours in social networks, and 5.0 hours working in the database.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 25 January 2010

Finally a decent genealogy day with few distractions. Wonder where the time went? Not sure how much time I wasted...more than I know, probably! A fun day.

* Read everything then posted Amanuensis Monday - the Will of Ruth (Hawkins) (Wade) Hopkins. Wrote Five Fascinating Interviews and set it for noon. Funny, RE posted about latter today too - coincidence?

* Checked databases in WorldVitalRecords for Seaver facts, and added some NH records and sources where I needed to.. Just scratched the surface, however. There are thousands of matches to put in the database on WVR, Footnote, Ancestry, etc. A monumental task and one that will just get larger over time if I don't start whittling the mountain of data.

* Got cleaned up, ate lunch, went off to the library for CVGS Table Talk at noon. Home by 1:45 p.m.

* Posted 27 January Program Features Susi Pentico Talk on Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog, then checked Gmail there and on Genea-Musings. Sent the program notice to email list, and posted it on Genea-Musings too. Checked Facebook. Checked OGF documents that Claire sent me.

* Dug out my pile of "to be entered into database" material and got five Great Migration sketches checked and noted into the database. Had some errors in my family data - nice to have them fixed.

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to watch TV, read paper and eat dinner. Was back online at 6:30.

* Read everything, answered some emails, went back into database to work on notes and sources some more. Have no clue how to figure out what I haven't done - with 38,000 persons them ind can't keep it all straight. I tend to randomly pick a family line then work down it, then the spousal lines, etc. But there are whole sections of my database that have the shorthand sources and sparse notes (or no notes, even for ancestral families). Need to identify those and find the supporting papers in the notebooks.

* Went in at 9 p.m. to watch 24, back online at 10:15, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 11.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 1.5 hours on CVGS, 0.5 hour looking at OGF, 1.0 hour in WVR, and 4.0 hours working in my database.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 24 January 2010

Not really a genealogy day - no blogging, no research, but lots of reading and football.

* Read email and blogs before church. Got home at 12:30 and watched Colts/Jets football game. Best of the Genea-Blogs - January 17-23, 2010 posted. Checked new issue of FORUM at halftime.

* Checked everything including Twitter at end of first game, went out and pulled weeds for awhile and cleaned up storm debris. Back in for Vikings/Saints game, but managed to nap during some of it.

* Had dinner in front of TV, glad Saints won, a good game. Back to computer at 7:30, read everything, checked Facebook, added new blogs to Bloglines, answered some emails, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 4.0 hours - 1.0 hour doing email, 1.0 hour reading/adding blogs, 0.5 hour reading FORUM, 0.5 hour writing blog posts, 1.0 hour on Twitter/Facebook.

Randy's Genealogy Days - 22-23 January 2010

Keeping two active little girls inside and entertained is a major struggle for us old folks - but the rain finally stopped after five straight days and our little darlings went home today with their mother.

Friday - 22 January:

* Managed to read email and Twitter but then had to feed and play with the grandgirls until Linda came home. Follow Friday - Elyse's Genealogy Blog posted while we were playing with blocks on the floor.

* Ventured out in the rain to get gas and go to the bank, came home for lunch and read blogs while the girls napped. Ancestry.com Financial and Subscriber Information posted. Then I napped too.

* Worked with the girls, occasionally came in to read email and blogs and Twitter, checked Facebook, etc. did nothing really useful, except print out my handout for the Saturday talk at EGS.

* Went to dinner at Chick-fil-A. The girls like the food, the indoor playground is pretty good, and we share a chocolate milk shake - making family history!

* Home by 7 p.m., got girls bathed and jammied and put to bed. Audrey went easily at 8, Lolo fought sleep until after 10:30. No wonder she's cranky some days.

* Read everything, wrote two posts for Saturday. Copied files for Saturday presentation to flash drive and laptop. Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 4.5 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 1.0 hour on presentation, and 2.0 hours writing blog posts for Saturday.

Saturday - 23 January:

* Audrey up early, Lolo slept late. Got them fed and entertained. Read email and Twitter but nothing else this morning. Surname Saturday - VAUX posted. Got them dressed, packed their suitcases, and loaded into car by 9 a.m.

* Got to Escondido by 9:45 a.m., Linda dropped me at library and went to shopping center. Tami came down and met them at lunch time and took them home.

* Met Ray before library opened, got laptop and projector set up in meeting room, and EGS meeting started at 10:20 a.m. Presented "Genealogy Blogging" talk. Ray took me down to the shopping center afterwards. Was sorry to miss the lunch with the EGS folks. Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Interests? posted.

* Grabbed a Subway sandwich, we headed for home, back by 1:15 p.m. Read email and blogs, and went in to take my well-deserved nap.

* Back online at 3 p.m., answered several emails requesting information. Added and edited sources and notes for some of my CT/RI ancestral families. That was fun.

* Took Linda out to dinner as reward for being such a good grandma...went to Black Angus for filet mignon dinner - she had a $10 coupon and a gift card - cost us only $20 cash! Home by 7:15 p.m.

* Read everything, then read several online articles, and wrote Best of Genea-blogs post for Sunday. Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 7.5 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.0 hours working on databases notes and sources, 2.0 hours at EGS meeting, 0.5 hour researching correspondent question, and 1.5 hour writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 21 January 2010

It rained pretty much all day here, with thunder/lightning tonight. Hopefully, the storm will pass without more damage in California. It was not a big genealogy day for me because the grandgirls are still here and require constant attention, and Linda and I share the load.

* Managed to read half of my email before Lolo commandeered the computer at 8 a.m. Treaaure Chest Thursday - Austin Carringer's Fireman Certificate posted.

* Got cleaned up, and left at 9:15 a.m. with laptop, projector and GPS in hand to go speak to the PEO meeting in Eastlake on "Genealogy - Be An Ancestry Detective." Was set up and ready to go at 10 a.m., with about 30 women in attendance. Finished at 10:45 a.m., and they all seemed interested.

* Left quickly and went to the Rohr Engineers Retiree luncheon at Jimmy's Restaurant in Chula Vista. Was home by 12:45 p.m. to find the girls down for naps.

* Read rest of email, then blogs, checked Facebook, and noted that Exploring FamilyLink.com Trees - Big FAIL posted. Tired, so went in and took a nap.

* Lolo woke me up at 2:30, and we watched TV and played until 5, when Linda had dinner ready. Randy and Abigail came over at 6 p.m. to play until 7:15, and Linda went off to her GNO with church group. Got girls bathed, dressed, brushed, fed and put down easily. Had to miss TGSG chat tonight because of time conflicts.

* Back on computer at 8:30 p.m., read everything, then wrote two posts for Friday. I'm trying to stay ahead while the girls are here, and really have just the evening to do it. Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 5.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.0 hours at PEO meeting and 1.5 hours writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 20 January 2010

The grandgirls are still here and require constant attention by one of us. We trade off! Their mom and dad have the flu and may face flooding in Victorville, and the other daughter has been housebound with two little boys and without power for two days in Santa Cruz.

* Read email and blogs before Audrey got up at 8 a.m. Exploring FamilyLink.com posted about then. Got Audrey fed and changed and dressed by the time Linda got home at 10 a.m. She took the girls to Plaza Bonita for shopping, play and lunch.

* Did some online checking of Ancestry, then gathered papers for the CVGS Computer Group at 12 noon. Went off to McDonald's for lunch, then to the library by 11:45 a.m. and set up the projector in the computer lab.

* CVGS Computer Group went from 12 noon to 1:30. Went to Gary's house to pick up projector for Thursday talk. Home by 2:15 p.m., and girls down for naps. Read everything and went in to take a nap. Audrey woke up then, of course. "Genealogy Blogging" talk at Escondido on Saturday, 23 January posted.

* Watched girls until dinner time, and major tantrums over food and not being able to watch TV while eating. They eventually ate, and did watch TV. We lost for the sake of harmony - not our kids, grandparents can spoil them! Got them bathed and dressed and down for bed by 8 p.m.

* Finally on computer, reviewed "Genealogy - Be An Ancestry Detective" talk for Thursday, copied to flash drive and laptop, printed out handout, all ready to go.

* Read everything, wrote two posts for Thursday since my time online will be limited until after 8 p.m. Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 6.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blog posts, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.0 hours on CVGS meeting, 1.0 hour on presentation, and 1.5 hours writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 19 January 2010

It started out slow, sped up at noon, and ground to a halt at 3 p.m., at least until 8 p.m. As I mentioned yesterday, things happen that change your priorities. My hope was that today I would be able to blog normally, finish my two presentations and the handouts, and even do some database work. Nope!

* Lolo played on the computer until 9:15 a.m., and finally got online to read everything and post Learning about Genlighten.com. Then the phone call came that changed the day a bit.

* Linda got home from swimming, and talked to Tami who thinks she is going to be sick like her hubby is with the flu. So Linda offered to drive to Temecula to pick up Audrey for the week so that Tami and James can recover. Linda and Lolo left at 11 a.m. and returned at 3 pm., and it rained up and back. A terrible day to travel. Audrey was happy to see me, trough!

* While they were gone, I updated my Genealogy Blogging presentation for Saturday, made the handout, and worked a bit on the Ancestor Detective talk for Thursday morning.

* When they got back, played with the girls and put Audrey down for a nap, then took one myself while Lolo watched TV. We went to Rubio's for dinner at 5:15, and home by 6:15. Got dessert for the girls, played a bit, got them bathed and dressed, and Audrey down at 7:30 and Lolo at 8:30.

* Able to read everything, check Facebook, and write two blog posts for Wednesday anticipating that my time online will be limited in the morning and afternoon. Will try to work a day ahead while they are here, and put everything else on the shelf.

Genealogy today was 6.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.0 hours writing blog posts, and 2.5 hours working on presentations.

Not-So-Genealogy Days - 17-18 January 2010

Sunday and Monday were not major genealogy days for different reasons - football and family. There are things that happen in a moment, or an hour, that take awhile to explain. The Chargers game is one of those. So was today's phone call...

Sunday - 17 January

* Read everything, added a few items to Best of the Genea-Blogs - January 10-16, 2010 and set it to post after 12:30 p.m. Went to church.

* Home from church and store by 12:15 p.m., took a short nap watching Vikings romp the Cowboys, then watched Chargers/Jets game. In horror and disbelief. Another bad performance in the playoffs. Too many stupid play calls, missed opportunities, penalties, etc., and the two critical mistakes - missed tackle and interception. Jets have a decent defense and good enough offense. Can't believe that they will beat Indy next week. Not sure Chargers would have either. Oh well. Had dinner after game.

* Came in to read everything at 6:30 p.m., wrote Gena Ortega's "Social Networking and Genealogy" talk at CGSSD, checked Facebook, and went in to watch 24 at 9 p.m. Went to bed afterwards.

Genealogy today was 2.5 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs,0.5 hour on Facebook/Twitter, and 1.0 hour writing blog posts.

Monday - 18 January

* Read everything, wrote and posted Amanuensis Monday - the Will of John Norman (1660?-1709?) and then wrote Genealogy Site Traffic - Rankings, US People and Visits to wrap up the traffic series, and set it for early afternoon. Got cleaned up.

* Linda called to say we need to drive to Temecula to pick up Lolo for the week - Tami's family is sick and she wants to protect Lolo if possible. When she came home she fell in the garage without me hearing her until she crawled to the front door and rapped on the glass. She's OK, bruised a bit. Left at 11:30, got there at 12:45, had lunch at In'N'Out and were back home with Lolo by 2:45 p.m.

* Took a well-deserved nap while Lolo worked with Linda, then came in and read everything before letting Lolo play on Nick Jr for awhile.

* Read paper, watched TV, had dinner, enjoyed Rocky Road ice cream with Lolo, gave her a bath, and she read with Linda before bed at 7:15. I read everything, checked Facebook and Twitter, and not much else.

* Went in at 8 p.m. to watch 24, and back on computer at 10 p.m. to write this post. Lolo finally asleep after 9.

Genealogy today was 4.5 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Facebook/Twitter, and 3.0 hours writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 16 January 2010

Really not much of a genealogy day, except for the morning and late night!

* Read everything, noted that Surname Saturday - SPANGLER posted, then got cleaned up , gathered the laptop and my toys, and took off for the CGSSD meeting at UCSD.

* Played online for the first hour at CGSSD meeting on New Web Sites - they weren't for me, but that was OK. Genealogy Site Traffic Trends - the other FamilyLink Sites posted while I was there.

* Gena Ortega talked on Genealogy and Social Networks, covering Facebook, GenealogyWise, Twitter and Second Life. Gena is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable - another good presentation with lots of questions from the audience.

* Went off to lunch with Pam, Gene and Chris at TGIFridays, got home by 1:45. Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Remember When? posted while I was at lunch.

* Football was on, but I slept for an hour in my chair after the big lunch and drive home. Watched until 3:45, came in and checked email, and we took off for a going-away party for a friend.

* Enjoyed going-away party, left for Oggi's for dinner and watched first half of Colts/Ravens game there. Home at halftime, and watched until 8:15. If Bolts beat Jets on Sunday, then they go to Colts next Sunday.

* Back online - read everything, checked Facebook, wrote "Best of" post for Sunday, then wrote this post. Done for the night!

Genealogy today was 5.5 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour read blogs, 1.0 hour writing blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, and 3.0 hours at CGSSD meeting.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 15 January 2010

January is almost half over - it's been an interesting genealogy month so far!

* Read email, blogs and Twitter and posted Follow Friday -- TransylvanianDutch and then Megan's new book - Who Do You Think You Are?

* Got cleaned up, came back and wrote Ancestry Magazine Discontinues Publication and then 1950 Census Substitutes on Ancestry.com. Whew - 4 posts this morning - things happen sometimes!

* Left at 10:45 a.m. for the post office to mail Christmas box to Santa Cruz (late delivery!), then to Costco to look at toys and book s and have lunch, and then pick up George for our walk in the sunshine on the bayfront. Was home by 1 p.m.

* Really tired, so sat in my chair, closed my eyes and napped for 30 minutes. Then back to computer!

* Noted that Ancestry.com fixed the 1950 link, so updated my post. Read everything, answered some emails, and worked on some of the sources in my database. Trying to make VR sources match sources already in notes.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to read paper, watch TV news, eat dinner, do dishes, back online at 6:30.

* Wrote Genealogy Site Traffic Trends - FamilyLink.com and WorldVitalRecords.com and then wrote three more posts for Saturday because it will be a busy day. Checked in on Twitter and Facebook, then wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 9.0 hours - 1.0 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 1.0 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 4.0 hours writing blog posts, 2.0 hours in database, and 0.5 hour on Ancestry.com.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 14 January 2010

Another stay-at-home day - saving gas and lunch money for our vacation trip in March. And our conference trips in April and June. And our grandparent trips in almost every month!

* Read email, blogs and Twitter, then posted New "Digging for Answers" Column available. Wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Lyle's Marine Muster Roll and set it for later. Went in and got cleaned up.

* Wrote Genealogy Site Traffic Trends - Footnote.com and set it for early afternoon, then went to the Genealogy Cafe and wrote January 2010 Newsletter is Online , New or Updated Genealogy Databases - January 2010 and CVGS Research Group Summary - 13 January 2010 . Tired of blogging - so had lunch.

* Checked in on online databases, answered some email, read everything, and decided to work on notes in my database. Found that cousin Cheryl had a new database online that is very well sourced and comprehensive, so compared my names, dates, places, notes and sources with hers and came up wanting. Did more sourcing, and added notes to some of our common ancestors.

* Checked email at 4 p.m. and saw WDYTYA is finally on the NBC schedule, so wrote WDYTYA may actually air! - mark March 5 on your calendar.

* Was tired, so went in at 5 p.m. to watch Haiti news - depressing... read paper, ate dinner, back to computer at 7 p.m.

* Started in on updating the Genealogy blogging presentation - got quite a bit into it - about 90% done now. Need to critically review and adjust the flow of it. Checked Twitter and Facebook.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 13 January 2010

Another pretty full genealogy day, including a trip to the library for a CVGS meeting. Still haven't ventured off to the FHC like I really want to do. But first things first.

* Read email, blogs and Twitter, and posted Footnote.com Membership Special then wrote Genealogy Site Traffic Trends - FamilySearch.org and set it for later in the morning. Got cleaned up.

* Printed off some things for the CVGS Research Group meeting. Put the Who Is Mr. Seaver? posts into a MSWord document. Left at 11 a.m. to get gas, go to the bank, have lunch at McDonaldss, and got to the library at 11:50 a.m.

* Hosted CVGS Research Group - had 9 there, good discussion, worked on a member problem, told them about my Seaver research. Was home by 2:30 p.m.

* Read everything, answered some emails, sent Lori another family history form for Lucas's school, wrote SDGS Saturday Seminar - Post 3: The Afternoon Delights, checked in on Facebook, and went in to have dinner, watch TV, read paper, put out trash, water front plants, etc.

* Back on computer at 6:30 p.m., read everything, wrote Gena's back at CGSSD Meeting on Saturday, 16 January and then modified all of the links on Genea-Musings - updated the genealogy link list, updated the genealogy blog list, etc.

* Started work on the Genealogy Blogging talk for 23 January - got previous version and edited stuff out so I can add new screen shots, plus the "why," "what," and "how to" sections. Got it maybe 40% completed before the saved web page loads brought IE to a halt. Had to X out and start it again - twice. Later.

* Wrote this post, will go check Facebook and Twitter again, then read my book.

Genealogy today was 10.0 hours - 1.0 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.5 hours writing blog posts, 3.0 hours on CVGS things, 1.5 hours on blog template, and 1.0 hours on blogging presentation.

Genealogy Journal - 12 January 2010

Nice to have a day to "play" - stayed home and did fun things.

* Read email, blogs and twitter, and SDGS Saturday Seminar - Post 2: "Back Door" Deliveries posted. Researched and wrote Genealogy Site Traffic Trends - Ancestry.com and set it for later posting.

* Dusted off my "Genealogy - Be An Ancestor Detective" talk and cut it down from 100 slides to 60 slides for the talk to the PEO group next week. I have only 30 to 40 minutes to speak. Took out all of the boring word stuff, left the pictures. Easier than I thought. Even practiced it once.

* Ate lunch, then dove into the database. Started with the paper pile to left of computer. Got through an inch of paper in about five hours. Mostly bits of research done by me, but not put in database. Also some derivative but good source material copied at libraries. After 4 hours, tried to merge two individuals and got a message saying my database was corrupted and I needed to use the Backup file to start again. Huh! Oh holy superman...did I waste 4 hours? Would hate to do all of that over! Apprehensively clicked on the open file link and the newly added data was there...gotta remember to save every once in awhile, may not be so lucky next time. FTM 16 is pretty stable.

* Went in at 5:30 to watch TV, read paper, eat dinner, do dishes. Linda was on computer until 8:15. Shoulda used the laptop on wireless, I guess.

* Read everything, wrote "Genealogy Media Day" at Ancestry.com. Checked in on Facebook and Twitter, then wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 10.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.5 hours researching and writing blog posts, 1.0 hour working on presentation, and 5.0 hours working in database. A pretty fun day!

Genealogy Journal - 11 January 2010

Finished one task, still have the two presentations to put together for next week. Yikes. Will get started on Tuesday.

* Read email, blogs and Twitter, and 10 Genealogy Things That Make Me Happy posted early. Wrote SDGS Saturday Seminar - Post 1: "Our Sainted Mother" and set it for mid-morning. Got cleaned up.

* Left at 9:20 to pick up Ruth and Kurt, got them to their home by 10 a.m. for an appointment, and came home to do more writing. Got my Graveyard Rabbit column written! Took them home at 12 noon, then went to library for an hour. Was home by 1:15 p.m.

* Checked out Ancestry's City Directory collection, so gathered some screen shots and wrote Using Ancestry.com's City Directory Collection.

* Linda wanted computer, so went in at 3:15 p.m. to read paper, take nap, and watch TV. Succeeded wonderfully. Awake at 4:30 and we ate dinner early.

* Back online at 5:30 p.m. and saw Susi's post about the Wright mystery. Did some census research gathering facts, and posted response to her blog post. The search is stuck because of the pre-1850 census problems. Need other records which may or may not be available.

* Answered some emails and looked in more databases for Wright stuff. Added some Seaver data to the database from a correspondent. Wrote post for tomorrow morning. Wrote this post. Feel like I wasted a good part of the day!

Genealogy today was 8.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 3.0 hours writing blog posts, 2.0 hour doing online research, 1.0 hour at library for CVGS Table Talk, and 1.0 hour on Graveyard Rabbit column.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 10 January 2010

Not much of a genealogy day - some writing on deadline, a little blogging, no research, a trip to the copy shop, church, a memorial service, some football and some TV.

* After I wrote last night's post, I wrote Blogger Day at Ancestry.com 2010. Hopefully, the attendees will write about what they learned.

* Up early, got email and blogs read, printed off CVGS newsletter, but had to leave for church at 7:30. Went to early service, helped Linda with memorial service setup, and left at 10 a.m. for the UPS Store. Closed until 11. Arrgghhh.

* Went home, watched bit of Ravens/Patriots game, added some items to the Best of post, and went to UPS Store at 11 a.m. Ran off the CVGS newsletter, labelled, stamped, folded and taped and then mailed in 30 minutes.

* Back to church for Memorial Service, then lunch afterwards. Home by 1 p.m., watched end of Ravens/Patriots game, and tweeted about Best of the Genea-Blogs post.

* Went in to watch Cards/Packers football game, read paper, took an ice nap, came back to computer at 3 p.m.

* Wrote draft of SDGS seminar summary. Went back to watch end of game, 51-45 Cards. Back to computer to read everything, sent CVGS newsletter to email list, went in for dinner at 5:45, then watch news.

* Back on computer at 7 p.m., edited the seminar summary and sent to editor. Wrote two posts for Monday because have early appointment to help Ruth and Kurt, former neighbors in a home now.

* Went in at 9 p.m. to watch Desperate Housewives, but daughter called to talk. We did, and watched rest of DH. Have missed about 10 episodes so lots has happened. Back to computer at 10:15, read everything, checked for details on GYR column topic, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 6.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 1.0 hour on CVGS newsletter, 1.5 hours on SDGS seminar summary, and 2.5 hours writing blog posts.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 9 January 2010

It was a full genealogy day without much blogging and without any research. Fun, too!

* Up early, read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - OATLEY posted. Got cleaned up and left at 8 a.m.

* Got to Mission Valley Crowne Plaza Hotel for the SDGS Seminar at 8:20 a.m., checked in at the SDGS desk, and found a seat in the conference room. Talked to Jean Hibben and several others for awhile. Checked out the books on sale and the candy bars too.

* Jean did four talks - two in the morning, followed by the luncheon with a short business meeting led by SDGS President Marna Clemmons, and two in the afternoon. The program ended at about 3:45 p.m. While I was away, the Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - What's Your Superpower? post was published.

* Rushed home and found Tami and the girls were here, so played with the girls until dinner time. We went to Mr. V's for spaghetti - the girls scarfed it - nice to see them eat so much. Back home for dessert and baths - they girls had to share my Dove bar for dessert, and they had their own sherbet too. Spoil them good, I always say! They left after baths.

* Watched the end of the football game while Linda was on the computer. Online at 9 p.m. to read email, blogs, Twitter and Facebook, then worked on the Best of post for Sunday. Then wrote this post.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 8 January 2010

Finished some tasks, found some new ones, installed some hardware and made it work, and had a nice walk in the sunshine on the bay. Missed out on Ancestry.com bloggers day - wanted to go, but had too many other commitments.

* Read email, blogs and twitter, and posted Follow Friday - The Slovak Yankee, then started on Who Is Mr. Seaver? - Post 3 and it took awhile because I did more searching. It was fun, though! Brought the computer to its knees - I do too much at the same time and sometimes it crawls.

* Compacted then made a GEDCOM of my FTM16 database, and made a source report in FTM16 for later comparison to other software.

* Got cleaned up, went to Costco for lunch, then picked up George for walk on the bayfront in the sunshine, then to Best Buy to get a new router.

* Home by 1:15 p.m., read everything, then installed router and set it up. It worked first time! Cool. Gave Lori some family history info for Lucas' assignment.

* Put the FTM database into RootsMagic 4, and made a source report. Did some more searches for L.B. Seaver just for drill. Where did the time go?

* Linda wanted to go to the market, then went to Lolita's for dinner, and home by 6:15 p.m.

* Worked on CVGS newsletter for awhile, got it done after Susi's final edit, and made a black/white version for printing. Worked in Legacy making a source report, and also made a problem report. Too many problems!!! Maybe I can put it side-by-side with my FTM16 database and work down the list - over 200 pages, but most are not real problems (I hope!).

* Wrote blog posts for Saturday since I will be at SDGS seminar. Checked in on Facebook, then wrote this post.

* Answered two long-delayed emails, including a genealogy report for one of them. Worked a bit in the database on sources and duplicate facts. Got cleaned up and had lunch.

* Researched and wrote Navigating the Ancestry.com Census Databases and set it for mid-afternoon. Looked for obituaries and wedding announcements in Fitchburg paper on Ancestry.com for my Shaw cousins - found several that pinned down death dates and a wedding date.

* Read the Westminster and Gardner MA vital record books for Seaver and Gates, and checked for accuracy of citations in database. Added several entries to database from 1930 census for Seaver, added sources and edited notes for one Vermont line of Seaver folks. Checked in on Facebook too.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper, watch football, and eat dinner. Was back on computer by 6:30 p.m. - read everything.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 5 January 2010

Pretty much a genealogy day, even got some database work done.

* Read email, blogs and Twitter, and How Many People are in Ancestry.com Member Trees? posted (written last night). Had comment that the numbers are in the Card Catalog now... wonder what happened?

Managed some blogging and a trip to the library, but made no real progress on databases, presentations or columns.

* Read email, blogs and Twitter before posting Genealogy Software Reviews - and Awards. Gathered up stuff to take to the library.

* Was already to go when saw Anne's tweet about Ancestry.com adds Wild Card Search Flexibility and then had lunch before leaving at 11:30 a.m. for the CV library.

* Worked on two different queries at the library - first in the San Diego Union index and then in the San Diego City Directories in the Local History Room. Was home by 1:45 p.m.

Randy's Genealogy Day - 3 January 2010

Not much of a genealogy day after church and Chargers football are factored in - but I did manage to squeeze in a blog post before the game and some database work in the evening.

* Read email and blogs before starting the Best of the Genea-Blogs post, then going off to church.

* Home by 11:45, finished Best of the Genea-Blogs post then went in to watch football. Charegers beat the Redskins 23-20 in last minute playing subs most of the game.

* Read everything after the game, checked Facebook, went in at 5:15 p.m. to watch news and eat dinner.

* Back online at 6:15 p.m., checked 2009 traffic stats for many sites, will post data in the next few days. Worked in database for awhile, correcting text sources to EE standards, and added some sources for ancestral families. Randy's Genealogy Day - 2 January 2010

Whew, a very full genealogy day fingering the keyboard...

* Got email read before went off to the Men's prayer breakfast, was back by 9:30 a.m.

* Read blogs and Twitter, made the RICH report and posted Surname Saturday - RICH and then wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - The Best 2009 Genealogy Moment and set it for early afternoon.

* Remembered that I needed to send the column off to the editor, so did that. Remembered that I needed to write the Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - January 2010 post, so did that. Checked my Gmail on the way back to Genea-Musings and answered them.

* Worked on The Best of Genea-Musings for 2009 for several hours - it's hard to pick the "best" - I settled for the ones I want to be able to find easily later on. Set it to post in late afternoon. Looked for Loren articles in SF Chronicle newspaper on Footnote - they did away with the Quick Look yellow marks...really a pain in the butt to use now.

* Worked on duplicate persons and sources in the database, especially the Cape cod folks. Probably did 300 to 500 source citations (note that I only have the book/manuscript, not the page numbers for most of them). The page numbers come later! Another big project, but at least I'll have the source in reasonable citation form (but without page numbers, or notes in most cases). Have 334 pages of sources - about 10,000 citations and about 600 master sources.

* Went in at 5:15 to watch football, read the paper, and eat dinner, then watch more football.

* Back online at 6:30 pm. and checked Twitter and Facebook, then worked in the database some more on the English Rich/Richman families. Checked Ancestry trees to see if anybody else has more data for them - they don't - and most of them have used my data it seems. Lots of duplicate persons, lots of needed citations and some birth/death dates too. Whew. Then wrote this post and I'm almost done!

Genealogy today was 11.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 3.5 hours writing blog posts, 1.0 hour in Footnote.com, 1.0 hour on Ancestry.com trees, and 4.0 hours working in database.

Randy's Genealogy Days - 31 December 2009 and 01 January 2010

2010 is here, and today was pretty much a genealogy day - even made some progress on organization and research.

31 December 2009:

* Read email, blogs and Twitter, and posted Treasure Chest Thursday - Abbie Smith's Death Certificate. Got cleaned up, then...

* Wrote Genealogy Goals and Dreams for 2010 and scheduled it for early afternoon. Answered some email, and researched a Seaver line for one correspondent.

* Had lunch, set up Linda's new camera, cleaned up the family room, and worked on the database for awhile. Judy came at 3 p.m., but was able to read everything, check Facebook, work on the database until 6 p.m.

* Got ready to leave at 6:15 p.m. for the Progressive dinner for our church group - salad at one house, main course at the second, dessert at the third. Had a good time, but decided to come home after 11 p.m. - everybody tired.

Genealogy this day was 6.5 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 2.0 hours writing blog posts, and 3.0 hours working in databases.

Friday, 1 January 2010

* Happy New Year 2010!!! posted just after midnight.

* slept in until 9 a.m., watched a bit of the Rose Parade, then read email, blogs and Twitter, and thought about what to write. Researched the Genea-Musings stats for 2009 and collected some images for a future post.

* Decided to attack the loose papers sitting on the boxes - sorted, organized, put some in folders, threw some away, it looks more orderly and maybe I can find things now!

* Wrote Stuff! to commemorate my organization effort then realized that I'm not finished...50 more linear feet to go! Watched some of the Rose bowl game in first half.

* Reviewed and modified my Genealogy 2.0 column again after finding some reference articles - will send it to the editor tonight (one day late!). Need to make a to-do list for January and February so that I don't mess up! Checked in on Facebook where I found there were many other Packrat family cousins!

* Went in at 5:15 to watch football game, read the paper, had a short nap and had dinner.

* Back online at 6:30 p.m., and worked on the Marshall/Seaver problem. Added data to the database, searched out more data on Ancestry, and added it to database. Went looking for Seaver data in Westminster book and found some - including Loring Seaver's entry that should tie it all together. Found more interesting data in a mug book, so copied and pasted that into the database entries also. There's lots more where that came from, especially for Seaver, Buck, and Hildreth families.

* Wrote this post, and am done for the night.

Genealogy today was 10.0 hours - 0.5 hour doing email, 0.5 hour reading blogs, 0.5 hour on Twitter/Facebook, 1.5 hours writing blog posts, 1.0 hour on column, 1.0 hour on blog stats, 2.0 hours working on data management, and 3.0 hours working on Marshall/Seaver research.
