My genealogy Sunday - 30 September 2012

Another month gone, 3 more to go until 2013.  I wonder how I'm doing on my goals and Objectives?  I haven't looked recently...

*  Read email and blogs, finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 23 to 29 September 2012 post and set it for after noon.

*  Linda went to church, I stayed home to watch the Chargers game.  Bolts beat KC 37-20.

*  Read a bit after 1:15 p.m., then wen t in to watch the Padres game, read the paper and take a nap.  Pads lost 7-5 to the Giants (home record 42-39).

*  Online to answer email, made a report after fixing about 50 source citation details that were wrong.  Drat, hate it when that happens.  I copied a source a long time ago into too many facts.  The source was right, the citation wrong.

*  We had dinner, I watered front plants, watered back dirt/grass, and did the dishes.  We watched SNF for awhile.

*  Online at 6 p.m. to read, post my Randy's Genealogy page with links to the Scribd PDFs, then finished up the Westminster MA place name list - added some sources to Facts.  Then worked in MyHeritage list of Find-A-Grave entries - confirmed 40, now down to 1209 left to verify, reject or add.

*  Started the next Best Of post, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 6.0 hours.

End of September statistics (with change from August in parentheses):

* 1,030 Feedburner for Genea-Musings (email) readers (-5)

My genealogy Friday and Saturday - 28 and 29 September 2012

We got home late from the Padres game on Friday night and I decided to skip the daily post.  Now it's late on Saturday night but i'm going to plunge ahead here.

1)  Friday, 28 September 2012

*  Read email and blogs, wrote My Top Ten Genealogy Websites.  Discovered the Mass town records sert on FamilySearch, and researched and wrote Massachusetts Town Clerk, Vital, and Town Records on FamilySearch.

*  Did I mention FabriClear before?  They kept calling back in early September trying to sell us bedbug spray for some reason.  They wanted to talk to Linda.  Linda swears she didn't order it.  I know I didn't.  They wanted to give us gas vouchers, but we'd have to sign up for $29.95 a month to our credit card for more free things.  Yeah, right.  I finally told them we didn't want it, cancel any order they say they have from us, and don't charge our credit card, and we don't want anything free.  They did, of course, charge our credit card for the FabriClear, and the box came in the mail on Tuesday.  I called on Friday, got a return number, and packed it up and off to the Post Office to send it back.  "What is it?" the clerk asked.  "Insecticide" I said.  He said, "Nope, can't ship it."  So off to the UPS and they will ship it for only $13.40.  Done!  Now we'll see if the $39.95 on the credit card gets refunded.  I'm not holding my breath.  I have no idea how they got Linda's card number, but it's on the bill.  A scam, I fear, and crooks behind it.

*  Back at 2:30 p.m. to read, add more info to the database for Shrewsbury MA, and make more reports using Legacy this time.  Better format than RootsMagic, and much smaller file size.

*  We left at 4:45 for the trolley station, ate at the Tin Fish, met a guy and his mother going to the game also, they ate with us, and into Petco Park at 6:30 for the game.  Giants won 3-1.

*  Home by 11 p.m. to read, check Facebook, add to the Best Of post, and not much else!

Genealogy this day was 7.5 hours.

2)  Saturday, 29 September:

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Surname Saturday - WHEELER (England > Massachusetts).  Wrote Guest Post - Old German Script Need not Fade and then Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - What is Your Matrlineal Line? and set it for early afternoon.

*  Listened to the FGS MySociety radio program and shared on the chat board about CVGS round-table activities.

*  After lunch, worked in the database adding sources for Westminster vital records using the Legacy report for the place.  Had to cross check with the source usage list to determine what had already been sourced.

*  We left at 3:45 p.m. for the trolley, got to Petco Park by 5 p.m., ate dinner (I had pizza, Linda a Subway sandwich), and the game started at 5:35.  Padres beat the Giants 7-3.  It was our last game for the year - I think we were 8-13 on the season when attending.  The team is 40-40 in home.

*  Home by 9:20 p.m. to watch the Aztecs game - lost 52-40 to Fresno State.  Online to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook and write this post.

Genealogy this day was 7.5 hours.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1860 U.S. Census Record for Edward Hildreth Family.  Worked on another post for the early afternoon, then decided to post one in the hopper, Book Review: Genealogy at a Glance - U.S. Federal Census Records.

*  Listened to Marian's radio show with Maureen Taylor, and did some research on the last Revolutionary War soldier.  Decided to write about that in the afternoon.

*  Researched and finished the Creating a Specific Source Usage Report in Legacy Family Tree 7.5 and set it for the early afternoon.

*  Wrote CVGS Fall Seminar Summary - "Show Me Your Roots" and CVGS Program Review - "The Civil War and the Onslaught of Modern Warfare" on the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog.

My genealogy Wednesday - 26 September 2012

Wow, only four more days until the end of September -it's fall already...

*  Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 224: Bess at the Beach, then researched and wrote NewspaperARCHIVES Records in MyHeritage Record Matches.

*  Answered some email, then packed up and off to McDonald's for lunch, the bank for cash, and the library for the CVGS program meeting.

*  John Finch was the speaker today on the Civil War, and did a great job.  Communed with my colleagues for awhile, got a book out and renewed two others due today, but forgot them!).

*  Home by 3 p.m. to read, then research and write UPDATED AGAIN: Creating a Specific Source Usage Report in Family Tree Maker 2012.

*  Went in at 4:15 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, take a short nap, eat dinner, put out the trash, water the back yard, water the front plants, and do the dishes.  Padres lost 8-2 to the Dodgers (so 74-81 on the season).

*  Online at 7:15 p.m. to answer several emails, then worked in Find-A-Grave (using the MyHeritage Record Searches) for awhile.  Got 20 more confirmed or rejected, 1250 left!

*  Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

My genealogy Tuesday - 25 September 2012

Another stay-at-home genealogy day, but I didn't get a lot done.

*  Read email and blogs, researched wrote Tuesday's Tip: Use the ProGenealogists Site for Research Tools.

*  Worked in FTM 2012 for awhile, then wrote Creating a Specific Source List Report in Family Tree Maker 2012.  No sooner finished, and the comments rolled in, so I had to write UPDATE: Creating a Specific Source List Report in Family Tree Maker 2012.

*  Wrote Amanuensis Monday Post Compendium Page and set it for later. Created 15 genealogy reports in RootsMagic and saved them.  Logged into Scribd and uploaded one to see how it would work.  Worked fine, ended up doing a total of 8.  Need to add some text to the files or to the database report somehow.  Files are really big, being PDF of RootsMagic reports.

*  Worked in the database for awhile, then had dinner, and back online for more database work.

*  Went in at 7 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, then a new book, and my Pads won 2-1 over the Dodgers.

*  Online at 10:20 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook and write this post.

Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My genealogy Monday - 24 September 2012

A stay-at-home day, with no baseball game... so I did what I wanted.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - Will of Solomon Keyes (1631-1702) of Chelmsford, Mass. and then RootsTech 2013 Registration is Open!

*  Wrote CVGS Program on Civil War on Wednesday, 26 September and The Problem with FamilySearch Family Tree and set them for later.  Worked in Family Tree after that and got Joseph Seaver squared away.

*  Went off to the pharmacy after lunch, and back home quickly.  Wrote Creating a Source List Report in RootsMagic 5 and set it for later.

*  Started on my source list for Westminster, Mass. using the Westminster VR book.  Got about half done by dinner time.  Watched football and read the paper, then walked over to neighbor's house to take her something.  Home to water the lawn.

*  Online at 7 p.m. to finish the Westminster list - found some new sources I didn't have in the Westminster book, and deleted several that were not in the book.  wonder where they are!  Probably errors on my part.

*  Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, checked some entries in NH Marriages on FamilySearch.  Wrote this post.

My Genealogy Sunday - 23 September 2012

This was actually a fairly busy genealogy Sunday - mainly because the Charger game wasn't on TV!

*  Read email and blogs, and finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 16 to 22 September 2012 post.

*  Off to church at 9:30 a.m., and home by 11:30 a.m. to read, then tweet BOGB when it posted.  Went in to have lunch and watch football for awhile.

*  Online at 1 p.m. to try to find the Chargers game on bootleg websites - found several (thanks to list in the newspaper), but could never get them to be clear or consistent.  Drat.  Listened on the radio while adding Find-A-Grave data to the database, using the MyHeritage list.  Glad I had something useful to do because the Bolts lost to the Falcons 27-3, and it wasn't that close.

*  Went in at 4:15 p.m. to watch TV, saw Charger lowlights, read the paper, had dinner, and watched a bit of football fame.

*  Online at 6 p.m. to read, start the new Best Of post, check Facebook, and do some Newspaper Archive entries from the MyHeritage list.

*  Went back to watch 60 Minutes at 7 p.m.  Online at 8 to mine Ancestry, FamilySearch and AmericanAncestors records for New England folks in my database.  Wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 22 September 2012

The CVGS Seminar was today and I helped.

*  Read email and blogs, noted  that Surname Saturday - LNU (England > Massachusetts posted, and left at 8:55 a.m. for Bonita.

*  Got to Bonita-Sunnyside Library at 9:10 a.m. and helped carry stuff in and set up.  I got my laptop on a table in the back of the room near a power outlet, got up RootsMagic and the Internet, and folks started coming in at 10 a.m.

*  Marshall sat with me at my table and we talked, listened to the brief introduction by Gary and Sam's 30 minute talk, then had over an hour showing how to run RootsMagic to two ladies, then searched online for Genie's father.  Found his death date, and two probable children also.

*  Had lunch on pretzels, cookies and grapes, then second session didn't have any beginners.  Showed RootsMagic to two other ladies.  Packed up at 2:40 p.m. and was home by 3.

*  Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Family and Genealogy posted and tweeted it.

*  Sleepy, so went in to watch football and take a nap.  We had dinner watching football.  Watered the front plants at halftime of Aztecs game, they lost 38-34 to San Jose State.  Then watched some of the Padres game - lost to Giants 8-4.  Used tablet to read NEHGR issues while watching TV.

*  Online at 8:30 p.m. to read blogs, add to the Best Of post, and work in Find-A-Grave *(using MyHeritage links).  Only did 4 links, but probably 40 FAG entries due to links in FAG.

*  Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 21 September 2012

Got a big deadline met, and did some blogging...not sure if I made much database progress, though.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Mocavo to Provide FREE Genealogical Records and included snarky paragraph about abiding by embargo times.  Turns out that others didn't have an embargo time, so posted before my time.  Deleted the snarky later after email from Mocavo explaining it.

*  Read about new FTM 2012 update, so downloaded, installed and uploaded a new GEDCOM to try it out.  The FGS problem seems fixed, plus some new features.  Wrote New Family Tree Maker 2012 Update, and set it for later in the morning.

*   Wrote Follow-Up Friday - Helpful Reader Comments and set it for mid-afternoon.

*  Finally got around to finishing up my column after doing some online research, and sent it off to the editor before the deadline.  Last one...

*  Had to download BackUpMyTree again and set it to work - the darn thing sucked up every file I had...hundreds of them.  Not what I wanted...started to delete them one at a time, but that's not going to work.  Wrote mail to them asking what to do.

*  Got laptop started, and loaded latest version of FTM 2012 and added latest GEDCOM file to it and to RootsMagic.

*  Wrote Surname Saturday post and SNGF post for Saturday, since I'm going to be busy.  Did some online research looking for Jean's ancestry and an AMT by a cousin.  Answered some emails too.

*  After dinner, back online for awhile to check Facebook, answer more email, and then watched the Padres game.  Giants beat us.

*  Online at 10 p.m. to add to the Best Of post and write this post.

Genealogy today was 8.5 hours.

My genealogy day - 20 September 2012

I got quite a bit accomplished today, considering the power went off at 9:36 AM and came back on around 1:45 PM.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that Treasue Chest Thursday - 1870 U.S. Census for Edward Hildreth Family posted.  Started writing a MyHeritage blog post when the power went off!

*  Went in on the recliner and read blogs and Twitter and Facebook and email on the tablet.

*  Left at 10:50 AM for Jimmy's at the Park with the Rohr engineers group.  Then to the library by 12:40 PM for the CVGS Computer Group, which was a bust due to the computer equipment.

*  Home by 2 PM to watch the Padres game, noted that Book Review: Genealogy at a Glance - Pennsylvania Genealogy Research posted, and finished up the Using MyHeritage Record Matches to Find Find-A-Grave Entries post before going in for the end of the game - Pads won 6-5.

*  Onlnie at 3:50 PM to read, add to the Best Of post, answer some email, do some MyHeritage Record Match work, then put a bird house together and we ate dinner.

*  Online at 6:50 PM to search for Mass. town Records on Ancestry to add to the RootsMagic database - captured the images, added the images, tagged the Facts, etc.  also reorganized the Ancestral Files a bit, and standardized some images.  Had to delete some Images on RootsMagic and upload them again because the links were bad.

*  At 9 PM, started on MyHeritage record matches in Find-A-Grave - got through 27 of them (out of 1342), plus links to others when noted, and added data to the database with sources.

*  Checked Facebook, wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 8.5 hours.

My genealogy day - 19 September 2012

Another stay-at-home genealogy day, although it started poorly.

*  Started reading email and blogs, but desktop computer wouldn't connect.  After several reboots, finally rebooted the cable modem and then everything worked.  Lost an hour...

*  Finally read email and blogs, then wrote MyHeritage Releases Record Matching Technology and (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 223: Frederick W. Seaver in 1933.

*  Worked in MyHeritage for awhile and wrote First Look at Record Matches on MyHeritage.

*  Made a new GEDCOM and imported to FTM 2012, and still have problems making a Family Group Sheet - works sometimes, not others.  Sent the file to Russ.

*  Wrote Answers to my MyHeritage Record Search Thoughts.

*  Finally buckled down and wrote the first draft of my FGS Forum column.  Needs editing but not bad for a first draft.  Wrote two book reviews for later.

*  Went in at 4:15 p.m. to take a nap, read the paper, eat dinner, put out the trash.  Then online at 5:45 to write CVGS Seminar for Beginners on Saturday, 22 September and a post for Thursday.

*  Watched Janet Hovorka's SCGS webinar on Playground Rules - lots of great material on the GPS, especially analysis.

*  Went in at 7:15 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, then my book.  Pads lost 4-2 to the Snakes.  Drat.

*  Online at 9:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook and write this post.

*  Read email and blogs, researched and wrote Tuesday's Tip: Use Princeton Public Library Links to Find Digital Archival Records.

*  Answered some emails - found out that I missed an August deadline for my FORUM column - completely forgot about it!  Drat.  Scrambled to find a topic and hope to get it done by Friday.

*  Did online research in GenealogyBank for Jeanne, my CVGS colleague.  Found some articles in San Diego papers for her.  Corrected a Genea-Musings article, and wrote A probate puzzle, or someone actually reads my posts.

*  Created an Amanuensis Monday Page on Genea-Musings, and then modified the blog layout - let's see if anyone notices!!  Need to do a Tuesday's Tip and Treasure Chest Thursday list too.

*  Got into NEHGS site, renewed my membership, and downloaded last two NEGHRs.  Read them, then wrote Catching Up with the New England Historical And Genealogical Register (NEHGR).

*  Added content and sources to the database for the Fairbank family.  Need to do more.

*  Went in at 5:30 p.m. for dinner, read the paper, do the dishes, and then cut the front lawn and watered the plants.  Back in at 6:50 p.m. to have my ice cream, cool off, watch the Padres game , put out the bug attractors, and read my book.  Pads lost 3-2 to the Snakes.  Drat.

My genealogy day - 12 September 2012

We were gone from Friday, 7 September to Tuesday, 11 September to Lori's in Santa Cruz to celebrate Lucas's 9th birthday, and Logan going into 1st grade.  I had set up two blog posts each day before we left, and updated them as necessary while there using Lori's computer when I could get access to it.

We got back home on Tuesday afternoon, and I wrote Guest Post: Obtaining Vital Records in Your Genealogy Search, by Kaitlin Lackey.  We went to dinner at Lolita's and back home to watch the Padres game.  I did some email and blog reading, and some software gymnastics, but nothing of consequence.

Wednesday, 12 September 2012:

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 222: Geraldine and Marcia in 1942.  Scrambled around, and finally wrote Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Association Publishes Samuel Crouch picture.

*  Gathered up articles, laptop, tablet and CVGS newsletter and went to McDonalds for lunch, then to the library for the CVGS Research Group.
\
*  We had a lively group of 17, and when I got home at 2:30 p.m. I wrote Engaging Genealogical Society Members.

*  Went in at 4 p.m. to watch the Padres game, ate dinner, watered the back yard, put out the trash, and washed the dishes.  Padres beat the Cards 3-2 to move to 69-75 on the year.  .500 is within sight!

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to do some searches for Jeanne on her Van O problem - found a listing for a Declaration of Intentions in 1888 in San Diego - need to find that document!  No luck on the passenger lists, though.

What?  I forgot to psot the last three days?  How does that happen?

1)  Monday, 3 September:

*  We had the girls today, and I posted Amanuensis Monday - Final Account of Estate of Hattie (Hildreth) Seaver (1857-1920) and Problems in RM5, LFT7.5, FTM2012 and Ancestry Member Trees.

*  did nothing else genealogy wise except review the CVGS By-Laws revisions, check Facebook, add to the Best Of post, read blogs and email, went swimming with the girls, and wrote two posts for Tuesday.

2)  Tuesday, 4 September:

*  Read email and blogs, noted Tuesday's Tip - Find Illinois Resources on FamilySearch posted, and we left at 9 a.m. to take the girls back to Huntington Beach.  Stayed until after 6 p.m., then hit Subway and home by 8:30 p.m.  Watched the Padres game.

*  Noted that Task 1 - Upload RootsMagic 5 GEDCOM file to Ancestry Member Tree posted, and wrote one for Wednesday.  Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and started the CVGS Newsletter.

3)  Wednesday, 5 September:

*  Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 221: Seaver/Richmond cousins in San Diego.  Worked on the CVGS Newsletter.

*  Home by 3 p.m. to note that Task 2a - Upload GEDCOM File to Family Tree Maker 2012 posted.  Then worked on CVGS Newsletter.

*  Worked another hour after dinner, then watched the Padres game (beat Dodgers 4-3, now 64-74).

*  Finished up the CVGS Newsletter, but had to wait to print it for lastm inute information.  Wrote several blog posts for the weekend.

*  Finally did a final edit and printed it out at 1:30 p.m., continued writing blog posts.  Left at 2:15 p.m. for the UPS Store, and copied the Newsletter and mailed the 30 copies.

*  Home at 3 p.m. to note that Task 2b - Sync Family Tree Maker 2012 File to Ancestry Member Tree posted.  Emailed the CVGS Newsletter to the membership.  Wrote more posts for the weekend.

My non-genealogy days - 1 and 2 September 2012

These were not significant genealogy days for me - the grandgirls are here and we tried to have fun.

1)  Saturday, 1 September 2012:

*  Read email before going off to the 8 a.m. breakfast at Jimmy's for my church Men's group.    Linda stayed home with the girls.

*  Home by 9:45 a.m. to help with the girls, we stayed home until lunchtime when we went to McDonalds.  The girls played on the equipment and we ate.

*  Home at 1 p.m. and got the girls down for naps.  Finally able to note that Surname Saturday - BIGELOW (England > Massachusetts) posted and then wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - What Type of Genealogist Are You?

*  Went in and took a nap, read the paper and watched football.  We left for Barbara's to swim at 3:45 p.m. and were home by 5:30 p.m.  Went out to Lolita's for dinner, then home to watch the Padres game.

*  Played with the girls, got them ready for bed, and watched the Aztecs football game.  Pads lost 9-1, Aztecs lost 21-12.

*  Finally online at about 9 p.m. to read, Add to the Best Of post, answer email, check Facebook, and that was about it.

Genealogy this day was maybe 4.0 hours at most.

2)  Sunday, 2 September 2012:

*  Read email and blogs, and finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 26 August to 1 September 2012 post.

*  We went off to church at 9:30 a.m., the girls went to church up until the Peace Pass then to Sunday School.  I helped Lauren learn how to read the hymnal.

*  Home by 11:45 a.m. to watch TV, eat lunch, read the paper, watch the Padres game, and put the girls down for naps.

*  Worked on the CVGS ByLaws and Standing Rules revisions for several hours.  Linda took the girls to Barbara's to swim, and I watched the end of the Padres game (lost to Rockies 11-10), then back on the computer to read, answer email, etc.

*  We left for Subway and McDonalds for dinner at 6 p.m. and home by 7:45 p.m.  Got the girls ready for bed and down eventually.

*  Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was maybe 5.0 hours.
