My Geneaholic Saturday - 31 May 2014

May was a very busy month for me genealogy-wise, and I accomplished quite a bit.  There's always more to do, of course!

*  Read email and blogs, and wrote Surname Saturday - PROPER (Germany? to colonial New York).  Added content and sources from the book to my database.

*  Answered a Marshman email, and captured Wiltshire baptism, marriage and burial information from FamilySearch for Marshman.  Added some source citations for several of the families.  Didn't find a link to Ann Marshman, though.

*  Went in at 12 noon to eat lunch, watch the Padres game, take a short nap and read the paper.  Pads won 4-2 over the White Sox (now 26-30 on the season).

*  Online at 2:30 p.m. to read, noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Memories of the Decade of Your Choice posted.  Added to the Best Of post and answered more email.  Worked in Legacy to test the list of names for events in one location.  Works!  Checked Facebook and google+.  Also added some sources from collected material and added file folders and files to the Ancestor Files.

*  Went in at 5:30 p.m. to eat dinner, then went out and moved some of the rose planter bricks, extracted one rose bush (only two small pricks to my hands), and move stuff out of the entryway and covered area in back to the wall in preparation for fumigation.

*  Online at 7:30 p.m. to read, then transcribed the Snow will for Amanuensis Monday, and wrote the blog post.  Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 9.0 hours.

Here are the numbers from my RootsMagic database as of 31 May (with increases in the numbers from 30 April 2014 in parentheses):

My Geneaholic Friday - 30 May 2014

May is almost over and Jamboree is less than a week away.  Guess I'd better get busy!  But first the weekend!

*  Read email and blogs, noted that 52 Ancestors - Week 22: #29, Sarah (Knapp) Auble (1818-after 1900) posted.  Wrote Planning My Classes for the Genealogy Jamboree - Sunday, 8 June 2014 and set it for later.

*  Downloaded the latest Family Book Creator 213 and installed it, but didn't run it yet.  Worked in Legacy to try to make a list of people buried in a specific cemetery, then asked for help on the Google+ Legacy user group.  Got some responses.

*  Wrote Dear Randy: How Do You Keep Your Workload Manageable and Everything Up-to-Date?

*  Went out and trimmed the west side of the house, then the rose beds on the east side - trying to get everything back 12 inches from the house.  Tough to move the bricks!  Finally got most of the vegetation off.  Filled several barrels today.

*  Cooled off and online at 4 p.m. to read, then answered email.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the Padres game, eat dinner, and read the paper.  Watered the front yard too.  Padres won 4-1 over the White Sox.

*  Online after 8 p.m. to read, check Facebook, and work on Ancestry adding content and sources to King people.  Added to the Best Of post and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

This was a pretty full genealogy day, until about 9:15 p.m. when my Internet went screwy.

*  Read email and blogs, and wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 216: 1840 U.S. Census Record for William Knapp Household in Newton, N.J.  Wrote another one for next week too.

*  Took Linda's package down to the UPS Store and mailed it.  Came home and answered several emails, had lunch, and got the Amtrak tickets.  All set for Jamboree now!  Not...

*  Worked on adding content, notes and sources to Sarah Knapp profile, then wrote the 52 Ancestors post for her.  Worked on James Kemp too.  Created Find A Grave memorials and requested photos for James and Mary Jane Kemp in Delhi Cemetery in Norfolk County, Ontario.

*  Downloaded latest FBC software and installed it but didn't run it yet.

*  Went in at 5:15 p.m. for dinner, read the paper, watch TV and went out and mowed the front lawn and watered it.  In at 6:45 p.m. to cool off and watch TV.

*  Online at 7 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and write the James Kemp post for next week.  Then worked in Ancestry adding content and sources until the Internet got slow for some reason.  Seems OK now!

*  Wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 10.5 hours.

My Geneaholic Wednesday - 28 May 2014

This was a really busy day and it wasn't all genealogy.

*  Read email and blogs, and noted that Betty and a Friend in the Garden -- Post 309 for (Not So) Wordless Wednesday posted.

*  Virginia (moderator) and the four panelists sat on the stage, I had the laptop with the slides for the screen for 7 of the 9 problems.  It went pretty well - we took 90 minutes for 9 problems.  The audience seemed to get a lot out of it too.

*  Got a new book and was home by 2:45 p.m.  Read a bit, noted that Merging Profiles on WikiTree had posted, and took a short nap at the keyboard.  Felt good!

My Geneaholic Tuesday - 27 May 2014

Didn't sleep well, up from 1 to 2 a.m., so got only 5.5 hours.  I had a deadline today so tried real hard to meet it.  And the Padres won.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Tuesday's Tip - 18 North Carolina Collections on FamilySearch.org.

The heat's on now...gotta finish up the mini-presentations by Tuesday night.  And then the Padres lost.  Drat.

My Geneaholic Saturday - 24 May 2014

Two weeks from now Jamboree will almost be over...

*  Read email and blogs, and noted that Surname Saturday - REIFFENBERGER (German states to colonial New York) posted.  Found some FamilySearch books to look for at the FSL, and wrote them down.  Saved one to the computer that I found.

*  Left at 9:40 a.m. for the FamilySearch Library in Mission Valley, and worked on the computer for 30 minutes - found some useful books for my Kemp line.  Put them on the flash drive.

*  At 10:30 attended Chris's class on RootsMagic for SDGS.  We talked a bit about making lists for a specific cemetery, and also about the interface with FamilySearch Family Tree.  Talked to Becky afterwards for awhile.  Drove home through North Park, they're tearing up 30th street.  Saw lots of Victorians but not any like ours.

*  Home at 1:20 p.m. to eat lunch, then work on Jane's problem - made the presentation.  Have more to do on the other two.  Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Go On a Genea-Scavenger Hunt posted.  Had computer problem - slow and then wouldn't restart - did a restore which took awhile.  Went out and mowed/trimmed the back yard.

*  Went in at 4 p.m. to watch TV and take a nap.  We had dinner at 5 p.m. watching TV news.  Watered the front plants.

My Geneaholic Friday - 23 May 2014

I just keep plugging along - some days it seems like my to-do list gets longer and the time gets shorter.  Started worrying about the tenting in two weeks - need to get the bushes in the side yard cut down, clear the area around the house.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that 52 Ancestors - Week 21: #28, David Auble (1817-1894) posted.  Wrote Calling all Genealogy Jamboree Attendees: Ancestry Needs You!

*  Took Linda up to the school at 9 a.m. and walked back because there was a parking place.  About half a mile.  Got a little exercise, but cost me 30 minutes.

*  Went in at 7:15 to watch the Padres game.  Why can't they win 11-1 when we're there?  Broke the losing streak, now 22-27.  Read email, blogs and Facebook in the 9th inning so I don't have to do it on the desktop.  Washed dishes.

*  Online to write this post, and think about the RootsMagic class on Saturday.  What should I do at the FSL with a little free time?  Genealogy today was 10.0 hours.

*  We left at 5 p.m. for the trolley station, ate at The Tin Fisdh near Petco Park, and were in the park by 6:40 p.m.  Padres lost to the Cubs 5-1 and it's very frustrating - lots of boos tonight, fans are tired of not scoring.  We left after 8 innings, and were home by 10:40 p.m.

*  Added to the Best Of post and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 8.0 hours.

*  Captured iPhone images for the talk on Saturday and got them into the presentation.  Put the talk file in dropbox.

*  Booted up laptop and synced everything, including Ancestor Files which hadn't been done for months.  Wrote two posts on the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog too.

* Checked Facebook, started tracking the fire, and researched and wrote WikiTree's "100 Degrees of AJ" Tool and Relationship Calculator.

*  Went in at 4 p.m. to watch the Padres game, we ate dinner, I read the paper, watered the front yard and did the dishes.  Padres beat the Reds 2-1 on a 9th inning homer (now 19-21).

*  Online at 7 p.m. to read, check Facebook, and add more media items to the database along with sources.  Then worked in Ancestry.com adding sources and content to the database.  Got through the Grant names.

*  Added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 9.0 hours.

*  Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 5.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Thursday and Friday - 8-9 May 2014

I missed journaling again last night - we went to the Padres game and got home at midnight.

1)  Thursday, 8 May:

*  Read email and blogs and noted that Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 213: Birth Record of Nathan Gates (1767-1830) in Stow, Mass.

*  The insulation guys came and did their job, finished by 10:30 a.m.  Then the Sears gal came and was gone in an hour and had ordered parts for the shelves.  No wood guys shows up between 8 and noon as promised.  Just as well!

*  The wood repair guys showed up at 1:30 p.m. and left by 5 p.m.

*  We left at 5 p.m. for El Pollo Loco for dinner, then to the trolley for Petco Park.  In our seats by 6:45 p.m.  Only 17,000 there on a cool breezy night.  Game went 11 innings and Pads lost 3-1.  The 11 p.m. trolley was 10 minutes late to boot, so we got home at midnight.

*  Finished up the CVGS Newsletter and just need to proof read it and work on the mailing list.

*  Went off at 1:45 p.m. to get a haircut and go to Costco for roses for Mother's Day.  Home by 3 p.m. to read, then wrote Mocavo.com Celebrates Mother's Day with Free Access Through Monday, 12 May.  Wrote the Surname Saturday post.  Checked Facebook and updated the blog and Best Of posts.

*  More wood repair guys came to do the back patio cover and the other guy finished up in front by 4:30 p.m.  A lady came by because she'd seen the wood repair guys and wanted to talk to them, but she knew that I was a genealogy blogger somehow.

*  Went in for dinner at 5:30 p.m. and watched TV news.  Online at 6:30 p.m. to work on the SNGF post.

*  Padres game started at 7:10 p.m., so read the paper and then my book, washed the dishes, and my Padres finally won a laugher, 10-1 over Marlins (so now 16-21 on the season).

*  Online at 10 p.m. to read, answer email, and update the Best Of and NGS blog posts, then wrote this post.  i'm tired!  Genealogy today was 8.0 hours.

My Geneaholic Wednesday - 7 May 2014

It was pretty much an all genealogy day - missed the Padres game, just as well, they lost 8-0.  Drat.

*  Read email and blogs, noted that Lyle L. Carringer, U.S. Marines Reserves -- Post 306 for (Not So) Wordless Wednesday posted.  Wrote a post for the afternoon.

*  Went off to lunch at McDonalds at 11 a.m., thence to the library and joined John's meeting in progress.  Went to the CVGS Board meeting and it cost me 2 cents.  Boring.  Wastes too much time.

*  Home by 2:30 p.m., nice and cool so I spent an hour trimming the rose bushes and clearing one of the beds and most of what's against the house so they can tent the house next month.  Got several thornpricks for my hard work.

My Genealogy Tuesday - 6 May 2014

I missed journaling here on Monday - we went to the Padres game and got home at 11:15 p.m.  Padres won 6-5 in 12 innings over Royals, we stayed through 10.  Needless to say, I blogged a bit on Monday, and was on Mondays With Myrt, and not much else.

On Tuesday I blogged and not much else also.  I could just stop there, but...gotta write something!

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Tuesday's Tips - Genea-Vlogging on YouTube and then researched and wrote Looking for Cousins in MyHeritage Smart Matches - Post 2: Communicating With a SmartMatch and set it for later.

My Geneaholic Weekend - 3 and 4 May 2014

It was not a big genealogy weekend for me - the normal blogging and the Padres games, plus church.

1)  Saturday, 3 May:

*  Read email and blogs in a hurry, and off to Marie Callender's for breakfast with my Men's Bible Study.  Always good there, it seems.

*  Home by 9:45 a.m. to read, note that Surname Saturday -- MORGAN (Wales > New Amsterdam > New Jersey), and pack up my laptop.

*  Left for Bonita library at 11:15 a.m. for the CVGS meeting, couldn't set up in the room until 12 noon due to previous meeting.  Got started about 12:10 p.m., and did my RootsMagic 6 Workshop #3 to about 15 attendees.  Some good questions, hopefully some good answers!

*  Got home by 3 p.m., packed up the takealong bag, and we were off to the trolley station at 3:15.  Got to the Tin Fish by 4 p.m., had fish and chips, and into Petco around 5 p.m.  Padres lost 4-3 to the D-backs, and it wasn't that close, 4-0 in the 9th and we had winning run on base at the end.  A really boring game until the last inning.

*  Got the 9 p.m. trolley, so home by 9:45 p.m.  Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - How Many Cousins Do You Know You Have? posted.  Read everything, checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and was done.  Genealogy today was 5.5 hours.

2)  Sunday, 4 May 2014:

*  Read email and blogs, finished up the Best Of post.

*  We went off to church, and stayed for the lunch.

*  Home at 12:30 p.m. to read, note that Best of the Genea-Blogs - 27 April to 3 May 2014 posted.  Started moving useful files form Downloads to file folders.

*  Went in at 1:15 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and took a nap.  Pads won 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th.  Pads now 14-18, pitching OK, hitting weakly.

*  Online at 4 p.m. to read, print off Padres tickets, and move more files around.

*  Went in at 5 p.m. to eat dinner and watch TV news.  Went out at 5:30 to mow the front lawn and water.

*  Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, answer email, work in the database a bit on Devier Smith, transcribe a deed and write the Amanuensis Monday post, and then worked in the database adding content.  Got into the Gif surnames.  Now 51,470 sources.

*  Checked Facebook, wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 5.5 hours.

My Geneaholic Friday - 2 May 2014

The weeks just fly by - that's number 17 in 2014.  It did cool off today - a high of 93F today here in the Casa del Fuego, and it's still 84F here in the Genealogy Cave at 10 p.m.  Fans work.

*  Read email and blogs, then noted that 52 Anestors Week 18: #25 Rebecca (Spangler) Carringer (1832-1901) posted and wrote CVGS RootsMagic Workshop on Saturday, 3 May 2014 at Bonita-Sunnyside Library and set it for later.

*  Worked in email, and checked out the Mary Lou Olson articles on GenealogyBank.  Researched and wrote Looking for Cousins in MyHeritage SmartMatches - Post 1: Finding SmartMatches and set it for mid-afternoon.

*  Figured out why my files weren't syncing between desktop and laptop - the desktop settings got messed up sometime.  Fixed that and now sync works for Dropbox, Google Drive and Copy.  Also noted that somehow all of my Documents folder is copied into my Music folder, and if I change one in one the other is changed too.  Frustrating - wonder how that happened?  Wonder if I can fix it?  The problem is that the Music file headings are useless for document files and everything goes there instead of Documents.

*  Wrote the Surname Saturday post.  Made a GEDCOM file for the database.  Got the new RootsMagic file into the laptop and synced the media to it.  Lots of red Xs for some reason.  The Ancestor Files folder isn't synced between the two computers.

*  Went to the store for a prescription and groceries, home by 5 p.m. to watch TV news, read the paper, eat dinner, and feed the birds.  Went in at about 6:30 p.m. and wrote the SNGF post.

*  Back to watch the Padres game at 7:15 p.m. and read the paper, and then my Brad Thor book.  Pads lost again to D-backs 2-0.  Now 13-17 and managed 3 singles tonight.  We go on Saturday.

*  Online at 9:40 p.m. to add to the Best Of post, read email, check Facebook, and write this post.  Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My Geneagolic Thursday - 1 May 2014

We're one third through the year already - they just fly by and before you know it you're older than you used to be.  Drat.

*  Read email and blogs, and noted that Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 212: Death Certificate of Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946) posted.

*  Researched and wrote RootsMagic 6 Software Updates - Post 2: Importing Descendants from FamilySearch.

*  Answered email, and wrote RootsMagic Saturday Workshop on 3 May 2014 and  Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - May 2014 on the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog.

*  Worked on adding notes, sources and media to Rebecca Spangler Carringer preparing for the 52 Ancestors post.

*  Went in at 5:30 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV news, east dinner, water the front lawn and plants, and wash the dishes.

*  Online before 7 p.m. to finish up the 52 Ancestors post for Friday, then edited the RootsMagic class handout, and worked in Ancestry adding content and sources.  No Padres game tonight!

*  Checked email and blogs and Facebook, and wrote this post.  Genealogy today was 11.0 hours.
