My genealogy days - 28 and 29 January 2012

Two more get-ups until we're off to Salt Lake City...Linda's packing.

1) Saturday, 28 January:

* Read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - WAITE (England to Rhode Island) posted.

* Read about CensusRecords.com, so wrote Is CensusRecords.com the new brightsolid USA Venture? This had a decent scoop in it, and was highlighted on Twitter for awhile by genealogy folks.

* Started to listen to the FGS Radio show, but we left at 11:15 a.m. for Lolita's to meet Tami and the girls for lunch. Then home to get Audrey, Tami and Randy a nap while Linda took Lauren swimming at the Y.

* Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Maternal Grandfather's Paternal Line posted.
Watched Aztecs basketball and Torrey Pines Golf, took my nap. Audrey up at 2 p.m. to watch Disney TV.

* Steph and Mary and Steph's little ones came before 3 to visit, and we played the whole time. Not many pictures taken.

* We went to Panera for dinner, and See's afterwards. Got Audrey bathed and read to, then she was up and down for over two hours. Wrote Rock Star Genealogist Results. Spent most of the time reading, adding to the Best Of post, and printing off material for the trip.

Genealogy on Saturday was 5.0 hours.

2) Sunday, 29 January:

* Up late because Audrey woke up at 3:30... got Audrey's breakfast and mine, did Linda's letters, and barely read email before Tami and girls left for home and we went off to church.

* Home at 11:30 a.m. to read, then finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 22 to 28 January 2012 post. Tuned into Scanfest and chatted until 2 p.m. Found two photo stitching programs and tried them out.

* Wrote Ancestry.com to LiveStream Sessions at RootsTech 2012.

* Wrote January 25th CVGS Program Review - "Genealogy Is Fun! Seriously!" and RootsTech 2012 Conference - LiveStreamed Sessions plus one more. Emailed board members my board report and members about RootsTech, respectively..

* Went in for dinner at 5, watched TV and Pro Bowl until 7.

* Online to read, start Best Of post, wrote the iGene Awards post for Monday, checked Facebook, answered email, worked for awhile in GenealogyBank. They've added more San Diego newspaper years. Found up to 1970. Wrote this post. That makes 8 blog posts today.

My genealogy day - 27 January 2012

Four more get-ups until we go off to Salt Lake City. I actually made some progress toward the goal today!

* Read email and blogs, wrote Follow Friday - This Weekend's Genealogy Radio Shows and then RootsTech 2012 - Livestreaming Schedule.

* Worked on the reference book, periodical and FHL microfilm lists, got them into PDFs, loaded onto Dropbox and Evernote, and they should be accessible when I want them wherever I am. Also created six ancestor reports (12 generations, no notes) and saved them as PDFs and put them on Dropbox (but not Evernote - would exceed my free storage).

* Wrote Questions for FamilySearch at RootsTech and then Follow-Up Friday - a Potpourri of Comments that need reading. Wrote two Surname Saturday posts for the next two weeks.

* Answered some email, checked Facebook, checked checked the Dropbox and Evernote apps on the tablet, and the saved data is there and readable. Posted Questions for Ancestry.com at RootsTech 2012.

* Signed into Geneabloggers Radio at 6, and went in at 6:15 p.m. for dinner. Back online at 6:30 for the show, then to Outloud.fm for the music fest. Left that to upload my music to Google Music (it's still uploading two hours later).

* Wrote the SNGF post for Saturday, then added to the Best Of post, worked for awhile in Find-a-Grave without finding much randomly, and wrote this post.

Only five more get-ups until we leave for RootsTech on Tuesday. I'm still behind schedule...and didn't do much today to help myself.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Affidavits of Tabitha Cutter in Revolutionary War Pension Files and then Pennsylvania Church and Town Records, 1708-1985 on Ancestry.com.

* Added several apps to the Galaxy tablet so I can use it in SLC - Google Reader, Google Plus, Twitter, and several more. Revised many of the PDF syllabus article names so I know whose talk they belong to, then added the folder to Dropbox.

* Noted that RootsTech 2012 Presentations - 1:45 p.m., Saturday, 4 February posted, and answered a few emails.

* Wrote a Treasure Chest Thursday post for next week, and started a post about questions to be answered at RootsTech. Thought about working on the column article...but didn't.

* Found that Ancestry had changed the Learning Center, so gathered some screens and wrote Ancestry.com Revamps Their Learning Center.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the debate on CNN - terrible questions and moderating. Ate dinner, read the paper, and back to work at 7 p.m.

* Worked on the CVGS Newsletter for over an hour, got caught up, just need content now - hope I don't have to provide all of it! Watched Marian's Massachusetts webinar - very well done.

* Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 25 January 2012

Five more days before flying off to SLC and I am even more not ready! Did complete a major task today.

* Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 189: Fred Shaw of Leominster, Mass.

* Put the presentation on the flash drive, added the files to the laptop, made sure it worked. Checked that the song was on the iPhone. Put the handouts in the laptop case. Ready to go!

* Wrote The Genealogy Bucket List Meme (Courtesy of Geniaus) and set it for mid-afternoon.

* Left at 10:30 a.m. for lunch with Janice and Olive (their treat, thank you, ladies!), and then to the library by 11:40 a.m. to get set up for the "Genealogy is Fun! Seriously!" presentation. Got the iPhone hooked into the house mike, the laptop up and running, and all set. Meeting started at 12:20, I was on at 12:45 or so. The audience of 40 or so had Genealogy Bingo cards - whenever I said a word, or they saw the word on the screen, they crossed it off. Got no totally filled cards, but it was close.

* Home by 2:30 to read, pondered writing something, but too sleepy so went in at 4:30 to take a nap. We ate dinner, watched TV and read the paper, I took out the trash.

* Online by 6:30 p.m. to read, write RootsTech 2012 Syllabus articles are online... and proceed to download many of the syllabus articles to my RootsTech 2012 file.

* Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

One more week before we fly off to Salt Lake City. I am so not ready...

* Read email and blogs, wrote Tuesday's Tip - Check Out the FamilySearch TechTips Blog for Technology Topics and then worked on the last three RootsTech presentation posts.

* Saw that the RootsTech app available, so I downloaded it to my iPhone and went through all of the screens. Added some preferred presentations to the My Events list.

* Where did the time go? The Rootstech 2012 Presentations - 9:45 a.m. Saturday, 4 February post went up, and I went back to the RootsTech app.

* Wrote RootsTech 2012 App Available for Download to iOS and Android Units and started trying to Friend people on Twitter and Facebook. That doesn't work well. Tried to find a picture of me for the app, finally put the ice cream pic into Dropbox and then into Photos and then the app. Seemed like I wasted quite a bit of time today!

* Updated my Google Calendar data. Answered some email. Finally got around to adding some names, dates, pl aces and sources for my Ayres line from the Freeman book.

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper, eat dinner, and watch the Obama speech.

* Back online after 7:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, work a bit in Find-a-Grave, search for more genealogy humor on the internet, go over the presentation one more time, and write this post.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - the Will of Nathaniel Wade (1709-1754) of Scituate RI. Wrote VOTE NOW on Genealogy Rock Stars.

* Wrote Do you have Loyalist Ancestors? Check out the UELAC Site and set it for later.

* Worked a bit on the Genealogy is Fun presentation, and sent the handout off to be copied.

* Worked in the database a bit, adding sources and content for the Pike and Bloomfield families from the Freeman book. Answered some emails too.

* Went in for dinner at 5 p.m, then watched TV until 6:30 p.m. Read everything, then downloaded Janet's book, read it, and wrote "The Chart Chick's Quick Insider's Guide to Salt Lake City" book is out!

* Edited content on my Google Calendar to get through RootsTech. Fired up Find-a-Grave and worked into the 5th page of Seaver entries.

* Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 21 January 2012

It was a pretty typical Saturday - out early to a genealogy meeting, home to write and blog. even took my wife out to dinner.

* Read email and blogs in a hurry, noted that Surname Saturday - ALLEN (England > Massachusetts) posted.

* Left at 8:15 a.m. for the CGSSD meeting in the rain. got there in time, and joined the FTM User Group meeting with Ken moderating. We investigated several things. I downloaded the latest update too.

* After the refreshment break, Denise got there and set up for her talk on Dropbox. That went well with lots of audience interaction and questions. I downloaded Dropbox to my laptop during the talk.

* Headed for home at 12 noon, stopped at the pharmacy and got home and had lunch. Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Do Some Random Research posted.

* Added Dropbox to the Galaxy tablet also. Made sure the laptop Dropbox sync had completed.

* Worked in the database for awhile adding Pike data from the Freeman book (obtained at ACPL).

* We left for dinner at Outback at 4:30 p.m., had to wait until 5:15 to get seated. Decent dinner - blew my calories though, I'm too weak - can't resist french fries.

* Home at 6:30 to watch TV news and read the paper, then online at 7:15 to read, note that Rootstech 2012 Presentations - 1:45 p.m. Friday, 3 February posted.

* Messed around with Web Search in FTM 2012, and found a death record for Amy White! Added it and sourced it (FamilySearch). Looked for more unseen matches for my folks, but none popped up. Worked for about an hour in Find-a-Grave, got through about 140 of the Seavers now - up to Charles.

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

A stay-at-home day filled with writing and not much researching for some reason.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Follow Friday - This Weekend's Genealogy Radio Shows. Moved the RootsTech post up to late morning.

* Sent my syllabus material off to the Family History Fair folks. Answered some email. Put my breakfast calories into the counter app. Wrote Follow-Up Friday - in which I Confess to Using Derivative Sources and set it for early afternoon.

* Started on my FORUM column about mobile devices for genealogy. I feel dangerous writing about this because I have one month experience.

* Added more data to the Counter app about lunch. Worked on the tablet a bit trying to figure things out better. Downloaded several apps also. Wrote the Surname Saturday post.

* Called for dinner at 5:30, then watched TV news and read the paper, forgetting about Geneabloggers Radio. Tuned in at 7 p.m. and then spent an hour afterwards on Outloud.fm. Good folks there!

* Read everything, researched and wrote the SNGF post, added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

The morning was a pretty complete loss of genealogy time. The afternoon and evening were better.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Kemp/Wilson Marriage Record. Wrote Who are the Genealogy Rock Stars? Nominate your Favorites and set it for later.

* Left at 9 a.m. for my doctor's appointment. Had to wait 45 minutes, so checked out medical apps on my iphone. Got into the office and he suggested another one - a calorie counter. Ouch. Got X-rays on my feet, then hurried off for the 11 a.m. lunch at Jimmy's with the Rohr retiree group. Fun. Had a Cobb salad...

* Home by 1 p.m. to read, then wrote Rootstech 2012 Presentations - 9:45 a.m. Friday, 3 February and wrote three more like it for the next few days.

* Forgot that I had real work to do, and got caught up in finding Richmond graves and census records on Ancestry.com and Find-a-Grave. Added quite a few notes and events and sources to my Richmond families.

* Called in for dinner at 5:30 p.m., read the paper afterwards, and did the laundry. Back online at 6:30 p.m. to work on the Genealogy Bingo cards for my talk next week (heh heh) - surprise CVGS!

* Got a set of 50 made, then went back to the Richmond data for awhile and added more events and sources. Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

One week until my CVGS presentation, and two weeks until researching at the FHL. Time's flying fast now...

* Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 188: Henry Pickford (ca 1920s). Worked on the Fun presentation some more.

* Posted Rootstech 2012 Presentations - 4:15 p.m. Thursday, 2 February. Listened in for awhile to Marian's webinar.

* Went off to lunch at Mcdonalds and then to the library for the CVGS Computer Group meeting. Stopped for my RootsTech haircut on the way home.

* Home by 2 p.m. to find Tami here, read everything, noted that CGSSD Meeting on Saturday, 21 January Features Denise Spurlock posted.

* Answered some email, and then worked in Ancestry (census) and Find-a-Grave (graves) to find information on the Pickfords of Leominster and Clinton.

* Went in for dinner at 5:30 p.m., watched TV for awhile, took out the trash and did the dishes. Moved the power recliner into the family room for Linda.

* Online again at 7 p.m. to read, post WikiTree Becomes Invitation Only Family Tree Database and continue working on the Pickford family. Found quite a bit, and managed to flesh out the families for 3 or 4 generations. Looked on GenealogyBank and Ancestry newspapers for these Pickfords without much success. Added quite a few BMDs and burials to the database with sources for the Pickford family.

Another all-day stay-at-home genealogy work day. I wish I was making more progress!

* Read email and blogs, wrote Tuesday's Tip - Use the Collections Search on FamilySearch and then wrote RootsTech 2012 Presentations - 3:00 p.m. Thursday, 2 February and set it for late morning, then edited the last one, and wrote the next one.

* Worked on the Genealogy Fun presentation and handout one more time.

* After lunch, checked out the Ancestry profile page that the reader found, and wrote What is this Ancestry.com Feature Called? And more questions...

* After the Galaxy charged, I worked with it a bit trying to understand navigation and the wireless/tether/hotspot settings. Pretty easy. Listened to one of Lisa's podcasts too. worked in the database for awhile - added text to the Arnold and Hawkins families.

* Answered some emails, then went in at 5:30 p.m. for dinner. Back online at 7 p.m. to read, then work on the Galaxy a bit more, work in the database, finally went to Find-a-grave and completed page 4 of the Seavers.

* Added to the best of post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

It was a stay-at-home genealogy day, and I actually got quite a bit done on several projects, but finished none of them.

* Read emails and blogs, then wrote Amanuensis Monday - the Will of Walter Allen (1601-1681) of Charlestown, Massachusetts and then Rootstech 2012 Presentations - 1:45 p.m. Thursday, 2 February and set it for later in the morning.

* Worked on the presentation handout for my blogging presentation at the Family History Fair. got it pretty much done - need to do updated screen shots.

* Researched and wrote GenealogyToday gets "A Haircut and a Shave" and then Michael LeClerc was hired by Mocavo. Wrote article for CVGS on my summer vacation. Answered several emails, and did a little investigation work on two of them.

* Decided I should work in my database for awhile. Added content and sources from the Thomas Arnold book that I found at ACPL in September.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper and have dinner, then watched TV until almost 8 p.m.

* Back online to read, check Facebook, and worked in Find-a-Grave for awhile -- got through Bert Seaver on 4th page of results.

* Added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day -15 January 2012

It wasn't much of a genealogy day for me, although I got one more task completed.

* Read email and blogs and finished off the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 8 to 14 January 2012 post. Set it for after noon.

* Off to church at 9:30 a.m. and home by 11:30 a.m. Watched NFL football, and read the paper.

* Between games, came in and wrote SDGS Seminar Review - Four Thomas W. Jones Presentations and set it for later in the afternoon. Went back and watched the second half of the Packers/Giants game, took a nap, and checked my readings on the iPhone.

* We had dinner, and I came online at 6 p.m. to read, answer several emails, and write up my SDGS column and send it off on deadline.

* Worked on Chris's research problem and found some UK census records and a marriage record. Checked in on Facebook. Corrected some census citations in notes and added sources in my database. Plenty more to do - like hundreds!

* Added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day -14 January 2012

It was a great genealogy day.

* Quickly read email and blogs,checked that Surname Saturday -- TUCKER (England to Massachusetts) posted, then got ready to go to the SDGS seminar.

* got there by 8 a.m., talked to Tom Jones for awhile, then looked for CVGS members in the crowd of 200.

* SDGS Seminar started at 9, gave my spiel about the CVGS seminar, and Tom gave his first two talks. Had lunch with several CVGS colleagues, then back for Tom's last two talks.

* Home by 3:30 to watch the end of the 49ers game, checked that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Make Your Own Genealogy Creation posted, then ate dinner, and watched first half of the Broncos/Patriots game. Read everything on my iPhone while watching.

* Online at 7:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, answered some email, checked Facebook, edited some content and added sources in the database, and wrote this post.

It was Friday the 13th, but I bravely went out twice on errands today. Otherwise, it was genealogy work.

* Left early to go have my lab tests done at SRS. Home by 8 a.m. Ate breakfast and then read email and blogs, and posted Follow Friday - Have Some Weekend Genealogy Fun!

* Wrote FamilySearch Historical Collections Update - A Quandary and then did my DNA test scrapes. Put the material in the envelope. Wrote January 2012 CVGS Newsletter Available Online. Wrote the Research Group review too.

* Had lunch, and left for the FedEx store, then the bank, the library and the gas station. Home by 1:15 p.m.

* Worked on the handout for the Genealogy Blogs talk. Wrote the Surname Saturday post. In the process, I wrote Genealogy Idol Contestants Named!

* Answered some emails, worked on a correspondent research problem, and went in to watch TV and eat dinner at 5 p.m.

* Back online at 6 p.m. to catch the Geneabloggers Radio show, and hung out for 30 minutes at the after party on Outloud.fm.

* Wrote the SNGF post for Saturday, added to the Best Of post, and did a little online mining for information about two Tucker ancestral families. The available information is confusing - it's best not to make guesses! Wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 12 January 2012

It was a full stay-at-home genealogy day, and I made some progress on several fronts.

* Read email and blogs, and wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Death Record of James A. Kemp.

* Exported Genea-Musings blog to save it as an XML file - 51 mb! Took over one minute, which is why IE9 was timing out - it had a 10 second setting. Did some bookmark managing in Google Chrome too.

* Wrote My Family Finder Autosomal DNA Tests - Post 3 and answered some email.

* Worked on the handout and the presentation for the Wiki talk at the Family History Fair. Need to do screen captures too, but got the handout in order.

* Took some time to look for my Richman notebook and I didn't find it until after dinner - right on top of the printer where I put it so I wouldn't lose it. Drat. Went through the desktop paper stacks too, and found several items that I added to the database.

* Wrote Rootstech 2012 Presentations - 11 a.m. Thursday, 2 February and then went in for dinner at 5:30 p.m..

* Back online at 6:30 p.m. to read, then worked in the database adding content and sources from three articles copied at ACPL. Also worked trying to figure out some of the Richman relationships, and added some sources and deleted some extraneous facts.

* Checked Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus, then added to the Best Of post, and changed the Genea-Musings template a bit. Wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 11 January 2012

It was a very full, and pretty fun, day doing genealogy.

* Read email and blogs, wrote http://www.geneamusings.com/2012/01/not-so-wordless-wednesday-post-187.html and then worked on http://www.geneamusings.com/2012/01/finding-us-vital-records-on-archivescom.html and set it for 11 a.m.

* Printed out material, and gathered up my stuff for the research group, and went off to Mcdonalds for lunch at 11 a.m. and then to the library for CVGS Research Group at 12 noon.

* We had 18 at the Research Group with great sharing. Went around the table sharing goals, then questions and answers, and finally successes and challenges.

* Home by 2:30 p.m. to read, then put genealogy dates on my iPhone Calendar, and had to copy pages for Tami before we went out to Lolita's at 4:30 p.m.

* Home by 5 p.m. to watch TV news and read the paper, then online at 6 p.m. Wrote http://www.geneamusings.com/2012/01/more-goodies-from-san-diego-newspapers.html.

* Went mining in GenealogyBank for two hours - Carringer, Smith, Blanchard, Seaver, Kemp, DeFrance, etc. Found a bunch of articles.

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook. Frustrated by IE9, downloaded Chrome to use as a browser. Imported and managed Bookmarks, wonder how I'll like it. Already found out it won't copy my blog titles to this post - it adds the box around it too. Will experiment. Wrote this post.

This was a fun day because I found the historic San Diego newspapers on GenealogyBank. I wonder when they were added? I should pay closer attention to the GenealogyBank announcements that come by email.

* Read email and blogs, then saw Denise's mention of the SD newspapers and quickly wrote Tuesday's Tip - San Diego Newspapers on GenealogyBank. Wrote FREE Webinar Series from APG and set it for later.

* Answered some email, and added some correspondent data to my database. Worked some more in FamilyTreeDNA and wrote My Family Finder Autosomal Test Results - Post 2.

* Dug out my Genealogy is Fun talk that had 69 slides. Modified the handout first by checking links, and then adding some to it. Then went through the talk and now have 100 slides since I have so much new material. Will winnow it down a bit I think - the goal is 80 now. I can do that in an hour, I think.

* Succumbed to temptation and went back into GenealogyBank to find more Carringer/Auble data in San Diego newspapers. Started in on the San Diego Union and saved some screen shots. Wrote The Carringer Gardens in 1935.

* Went in for dinner, watched the news and read the paper. Online at 7 p.m. to do more GenealogyBank mining, and ended up with 24 screen shots. There were lots of land transactions.

* Finally decided that I'd better write my GYR Journal article due on Wednesday. Did that and sent it off.

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and Google Plus, and wrote this post.

Some blogging, a quick library trip, the rotten BCS game, and some Find-a-Grave for therapy.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - the will of Robert Gifford (1660-1730) of Dartmouth, Massachusetts and then researched and wrote Finding U.K. Vital Records on Archives.com.

* Answered some emails, sent the CVGS newsletter to the members, and had lunch.

* Left after noon for the library to return the overdue book, looked for more but they've really cut back their holdings. Home by 1:15 p.m.

* Read everything, checked Facebook, researched and wrote My Family Finder Autosomal Test Results - Post 1.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch news, then ate dinner and watched the BCS game. What a terribly boring game. Played on the iPhone for the whole second half - got my reading done!

It was not much of a genealogy day at all. I find that Sundays are usually my day of genea-rest.

* Read email and blogs, put finishing touches on Best of the Genea-Blogs - 1 January to 7 January 2012 and set it for after noon.

* Went off to church at 9:30 a.m. and talked a bit to John about CVGS. We stopped at the store afterwards, home by 12 noon.

* Watched both football games, we ate dinner afterwards.

* Online at 6 p.m. to read, then check in on Facebook, answer some emails, add to the Best Of post, and work in Find-a-Grave for awhile, adding dates and sources to the database. Wrote this post.

Another significant task completed today...many more to come!

* Read email and blogs before going off to the Men's study breakfast at Jimmy's at the Park. Home by 9:30 a.m.

* Noted that Surname Saturday - THURSTON (England > Rhode Island > Massachusetts) posted, and wrote Top 100 Most Popular Genealogy Websites - Genea-Musings is #90!

* Wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Very Best 2011 Research Adventure and set it for early afternoon.

* Edited the CVGS Newsletter one more time (amazing how many errors and editing glitches you can find when you read carefully!) and printed it out. Printed out the labels too. I was going to take it down at 12:30 p.m. to copy it, but Susi didn't get the seminar flyer to me - it had an omission.

* Went in at 1:15 p.m. to watch the NFL game, took a nap, and finally left at 3 p.m. to copy the CVGS Newsletter. Copied, stamped, labelled, sealed, and delivered to the Post Office, and home by 4 p.m. Watched the end of the game.

* Answered email, then watched the second NFL game, ate dinner, read the paper, etc.

* Online at 8 p.m. to read everything, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, work for an hour putting Find-a-Grave entries for Seaver (up to the 120-160 page now) into the database along with dates, places and sources. It's amazing how much information is on Find-a-Grave. While it's not complete, it's a wonderful resource. Wrote this post!

* Read email and blogs - wrote Follow Friday - Have Genealogy Fun This Weekend and then RootsTech 2012 Speaker Schedule is Available. Wrote "Beginning Genealogy" Presentations and set it for later in the morning.

* Left at 11 a.m. for the pharmacy, then Costco for lunch, picked up George for our walk on the bayfront, stopped at the library for a book, and was home by 1 p.m.

* Read everything, a big brouhaha on Facebook, and wrote Follow-Up Friday - You Comment, I Respond. Looked in Ancestry.com for funny names in the census, and funny occupations too, for my Fun talk in three weeks. It needs major editing and new blood.

* Wrote Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - January 2012 and CVGS Spring Seminar is Saturday, 31 March 2012. Added the last bits to the CVGS Newsletter. Still need to edit it one more time on Saturday.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to eat dinner, read the paper and watch TV news.

* Back online at 6 p.m. to listen to Geneabloggers Radio - an excellent show this week.

* Looked at the CVGS Newsletter again, did more editing, added one last piece. Wrote the Surname Saturday post. Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

Did my first presentation of the year today at the DAR Chapter meeting - went well! Lots more to do this year!

* Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Death Record of Mary Jane Kemp (1841-1874) and then worked in Archives.com and wrote Finding U.K. Census Records on Archives.com and set it for late morning.

* Gathered my stuff for the DAR talk, checked the email for directions (glad I checked, thought it was somewhere else!), made a map, and left at 11 a.m..

* Got to the place at 11:30 a.m., met by Mary Lou, sat with Sandy and PJ, had a nice lunch, then did my presentation in 60 minutes. Left at 2 p.m., and home by 2:30 p.m.

* Read email and blogs, looked at my Family Finder DNA results again, and decided to take a nap. Watched TV news, games, then we had dinner, and watched news until 6:30 p.m.

* Read everything, then worked on the CVGS Newsletter. It's about 90% done - two things to add for a Saturday publication.

* Checked in on Facebook, added to the Best Of post, then looked through English parish register data on FamilySearch for Richman, Rich, Hill, Warren, etc. Found some Hill data and added it to the database, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 4 January 2012

It was another full genealogy day with lots of issues bubbling up. One task ends, another starts, no rest for the genea-pooped!

* Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) wordless Wednesday - Post 186: James Richmond and then watched several of the ICAPGEN videos (speed-read through the slides) ICAPGEN Mentoring Classes on Video and set it for later.

* Researched a bit on Archives.com and wrote Finding Census Records on Archives.com - Last Name Variations and set it for early afternoon.

* Left at 10:50 a.m. for McDonalds for lunch, then the post office to mail the photo frames to Paul, then the bank, and finally the library for the CVGS Board meeting. Meeting lasted until almost 3 p.m.

* Home to read email and blogs, then edited the handout for the talk to DAR on Thursday. Printed off 50 copies.

* Went in for dinner at 5:30, then watched news and football game for awhile.

* Online at 7 p.m. to edit the presentation (added some Isaac Buck RevWar pension file stuff and the DAR application) and save it as a PDF, put it on Dropbox, put it on the flash drive and thence to the laptop. Put the handouts in my laptop case - I'm ready!

* Started in on the CVGS Newsletter editing - got it set up and about 35% done. Need a lot more content!

* Checked in on Facebook, added to the Best Of post, worked for awhile in the database doing random edits and sourcing, then wrote this post.

It was pretty much an all-genealogy day here in the Genealogy Cave.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Tuesday's Tip - City Directories on Fold3.com and SDGS Seminar on Saturday, 14 January Features Thomas W. Jones and set it for late morning.

* Found my FHL To-Do list and added research tasks to it. Then I found my Book and periodical list and added results from the ACPL and CPL trips to it, and added several items more to it.

* Researched in Archives.com for awhile, and wrote Finding Census Records on Archives.com - General Search and set it for early afternoon.

* Entered notes and source data for the Learned and Fisher sketches from the Eva Kempton book (Volume 4), completing the four volumes.

* Went in at 6 p.m. for dinner, then watched TV and read the paper until 7 p.m.

* Answered some emails, then added content and sources from some of my Whittle/McKnew blog posts to the database.

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

It felt strange having the Rose Bowl Parade and the BCS Bowl games on the day after 1 January. On the other hand, it was a holiday and time for a party.

* Read emails and blogs, then wrote Amanuensis Monday - Probate Records of Thomas Graves (1620-1697) of Lynn, Massachusetts and Goals and Objectives for 2012. Wrote GenSoftReviews 2011 User Choice Awards Announced and set it for after noon, and wrote Top 25 Posts in 2011 on Genea-Musings and set it for mid-afternoon.

* blogging over for the day, I went in and had a snack and watched the football game for awhile, even took a short nap.

* We left at 1 p.m. for the New Year's Day party at Ann's, and had a good time. Myrna and I compared iPhone apps (she's had hers longer, and has more memory, but I have the more recent iOS).

* We were home by 4 p.m. to watch the end of the Rose Bowl, and Kathleen came for dinner at 4:45 p.m. We watched football, ate dinner, and watched more football. I snuck in after dinner to read, then went back to watch the end of the Fiesta Bowl game.

* Revised my Genealogy- Be An Ancestor Detective presentation for Thursday. Worked a bit in Archives.com trying to figure out their search scheme. Guess I'll have to blog about it a bit. Added to the Best Of post too. Checked Facebook and wrote this post.

Woke up early and sober - the result of not going out for New Year's Eve!

* Read email and blogs, noted that Happy New Year!!! did not post when I wanted it to, so posted it.

* Went to church at 9:30 a.m., home by 11:40 a.m. to read, then noted that Best of the Genea-Blogs - for the year 2011 posted.

* Worked on Benchmark Numbers for 1 January 2012 and set it for 4 p.m. Went in to watch the Chargers game. Chargers beat the Raiders 38-26.

* Answered email and went in at 5:30 to watch the news and eat dinner. Linda did email afterwards, so watched the football game.

* Online at 7:30 to read, noted that Benchmark didn't post, so did that, and wrote Tamura Jones Posts on Genealogy Blogs, Industry, Trends, and Awards.

* Worked in the database a bit - added data from emails, then did some Find-a-Grave entries. Through first 120 Seaver entries now.

* Downloaded Behold 1.0 to see how it works. Fast. Lots of RootsMagic database errors - mainly double dates and lines too long for source citation details.

We made it home today from Santa Cruz and Monte Rio. We drove from Solvang to Chula Vista in four hours, getting home at 12:30 p.m.

* I fired up the desktop computer soon after and got my email sorted out and blogs read. Started in on the Best of 2011 Genea-blogs and worked on it for a long time. This is something I should do every month.

* Made my Happy New Year's post for Sunday also. Then checked Facebook and wrote this post.

This may be my last Journal entry for the year - we're off on Thursday for Santa Cruz to spend Christmas with Lori and the boys, and then go to Monte Rio for several days with Paul and Deb.

It was a blogging fool kind of day - I lost track of how many I wrote, but I posted five and wrote quite a few more.

* Read email and blogs, and noted that Advent Calendar - December 21: Christmas Music posted. Got phone call from cousin Diana about the Journal. We talked about all of the extended family. It was great to talk to her again. I forgot to put my cousin's obituary in the Journal.

* Wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 184: Randy and Santa Claus and next week's post also.

* Worked in FTM 2012 for awhile, and wrote Ancestry Member Trees, Family Tree Maker 2012, and the iPhone Ancestry App - Post 3. Schelly called, and I posted MyHeritage Releases new feature-packed Family Tree Builder 6.0.

* Decided to make a report for Paul on his grandmother's ancestry. Made an RM5 GEDCOM, read it into FTM16, then the FTM16 file into FTM2012, but the narrative report I saved as an RTF needed lots of editing. Went back to FTM16 and made an RTF report and had to do only minor edits on it. Printed it, put it in an envelope, put the envelope in my laptop case.

* Did some wrapping while Linda was out. All in a bag that I need to remember! Gathered all of the electronic gear and the cables and put them all in the laptop case.

* Noted that Historical Records of a Real Santa Claus posted. Wrote several more blog posts for next week.

* Went off at 4:30 p.m. to go to the bank for cash. Home by 5 p.m. Watched TV until dinner time.

* Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, write three more blog posts, answer some email, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and write this post.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 20: Religious Services posted, and then wrote Tombstone Tuesday - William and Sarah (Cutter) Knapp in Newton, New Jersey.

* Answered some CVGS emails, and then worked in FTM 2012 for awhile. Decided to unlink the AMT tree, so then downloaded the AMT tree to a new FTM database and all of the media came with it. Added more record links using the iPhone to Russ's tree for his testing.

* Wrote Ancestry Member Trees, Family Tree Maker 2012, and the iPhone Ancestry App - Post 2 about making it all work. Had lunch.

* Left at 1 p.m. to go shopping at Plaza Bonita - bought two small things for Linda. Need more stocking stuffers and one more nice blouse or sweater.

* Home by 2:30 p.m. to read, then wrote Possible Knapp Families in Dutchess County - Post 4: Knapps in the Settlers of the Beekman Patent.

* Went hunting for marriage records in San Francisco on FamilySearch and found a license. Decided to write it up for next week in two posts.

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to eat dinner, watch TV, and read the paper.

* Back on keyboard at 6:30 p.m. to read, write more blog posts for next week, and work in FTM 2012 some more. Added linked images to more people using the iPhone so I can sync them on Wednesday.

It was not a really big genealogy weekend because Tami, James and the girls were here for most of it. Then Sunday had football.

1) Saturday, 17 December 2011:

* Got email and blogs read, and the Surname Saturday and SNGF posts went up on schedule. Tami's family got here by 11 a.m. and it was pretty much non-stop fun until evening. We opened Christmas gifts in the afternoon - Lauren got to ride her new bike and Audrey tried out her skates (can't get them off her!). Went to dinner at Miguels. Tami and family went driving by Christmas Tree Lane while I watched the Aztecs game.

* Managed to get the Best Of post ready to go on Sunday. Not much else got done!

2) Sunday, 18 December 2011:

* Tami's family left at 10 to go to the bayfront, then they headed for home. We went to church. Finished up the Best Of the Genea-Blogs post and watched football games. Took a nap, then mowed the front lawn.

* Watched the Chargers game during dinner - we won 34-14.

* Online at 9 p.m. to read, then wrote the amanuensis Monday post for Monday. I need to start working ahead so that there's posts during our Christmas trip.

* Wrote Follow-Up Friday - The William Knapp Search, then left to mail my Journal packets, get a Polish dog at Costco and wander through the toys, then picked up George for our walk on the bayfront. We only went halfway because of my foot.

* Home by 1 p.m. to read, read more of ESM's website, and write Elizabeth Shown Mills's "Historic Pathways" Website.

* Worked on the Samsung Galaxy tablet for the first time. Navigation is different from the iPhone! Got Linda's email and Facebook on it and looked at other Apps. It already had Sudoku and Yahtzee games. Will add more later.

* We left at 4:50 p.m. for dinner at Lolita's. Blech.

* Home in time to listen to the Geneabloggers Radio show at 6 p.m, until 8 p.m. Chatted most of the time.

The day seemed to go by quickly... and now it's almost Friday. Where did this week go?

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 15: Holiday Happenings posted, and wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Lucretia (Smith) Seaver's Death Certificate.

* Downloaded the MyHeritage App and it works. Answered some email.

* Left at 11 a.m. for the ban, the library, and McDonald's.

* Home by 12:30 to read, then wrote Possible Knapp Families in Dutchess County - Post 2: The "Nicholas Knapp Genealogy."

* Balanced the checkbooks and organized the paper files...

* Added thumbnail images to the FTM2012 shared on iPhone, synced to Ancestry tree, and noted that it's on the iPhone too.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV news, read the paper and eat dinner. Watched more TV after.

* Online at 7 p.m. to read, then worked on the iPhone adding hints to the tree. They synced to Ancestry, but not yet to FTM 2012 for some reason. Got the Journal stuffed, labelled, licked, and stamped while doing the iPhone thing.

My genealogy day - 14 December 2011

It was an interesting day, with the CVGS Holiday Luncheon and then adding music, photos and PDFs to my iPhone.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 14: Fruitcake! Friend or foe? posted. Wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Voss from Molster Farm and then Rootsweb Review Bites the Dust.

* Wrapped the flash drive for the CVGS gift exchange, heated up the veggies, put them in the casserole, and took everything out to the car. Left at 10:40 a.m. for the library for the CVGS Holiday Luncheon.

* Helped set up chairs, consulted with others on research problems, showed off my iPhone to several people, and the meeting started at 11:45. Food started at 12:15 when Linda showed up. Gary put a nice slide show together about 11 CVGS folks that are past presidents, 20-year members or honorary members. I was included as one of them. Helped clean up a bit, and then Pam gifted me with the sugar cookies that she made, knowing that I would enjoy them, since I blogged about them the other day. Yum!

* Was home by 3 p.m. to read, then wrote Possible Knapp Families in Dutchess County NY in 1790.

* Very sleepy after all of the desserts ... went in and took a nap, then read the paper, watched TV, ate dinner, and put the trash out.

* Collated and stapled the Journal copies. Now I need to buy the envelopes, stamp and label them, and mail them out on Friday.

* Worked for awhile trying to get my music, some photos and some PDFs on the iPhone. Resorted to Googling "how to..." and the articles were helpful, although I didn't catch everything the first time around! Now I have over 500 songs, over 170 photos of the grandkids, and 4 genealogy reference books in PDF on the iPhone. In hindsight, the Galaxy will be better for the PDF books!

It was a cold and rainy day again, so I didn't go out. I worked in my database and got my Journal finished!

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 13: Holiday Travel posted. Wrote
Tech Tuesday - Smart Phone and a Tablet...oh my!

* Answered email, and answered some Ancestry.com messages. Added info to the database from email, and did some more work enriching the spouses of Seaver folks...I have lots of people with just a name who married a Seaver person, so I'm randomly going through and finding data on Rootsweb WorldConnect, Ancestry databases, especially the census records, or FamilySearch databases.

* Made another cut-down GEDCOM file that included spouses of descendants, loaded it into FTM 2012, synced to Ancestry.com, and into my iPhone.

* Posted Early-Bird Deadline for APG PMC in Salt Lake City and then wrote Commentary on Social Security Death Index Restrictions.

* Worked some more in the database on Seaver spouses. When I find info in a database, I add it and source it. I also try to edit the Notes for uniformity when necessary.

* Pared down my music collection by using a naming convention and eliminating duplicates. I still have more to do to separate them into genres. Eventually, some will go into my iTunes folder and hopefully into my iPhone. Added a bunch of PDFs to my Dropbox file. I hope to be able to read them on the iPhone and Galaxy.

* Went in at 5 p.m. for dinner, then we took dinner to our friends house where she just got out of the hospital. Linda likes helping others...she's an angel!

* Home by 6:30 p.m. to start in on printing the even number pages of the Family Journal. It went OK, had maybe 10 spoiled pages. almost ran out of color ink too.

* Worked more in the database, concentrating on Vermont BMDs on FamilySearch. Added quite a few marriages with sources.

* Added to the Best Of post, wrote six Advent Calendar posts for the next week, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

* Read email and blogs, got Best Of post ready. Went off to church at 9:40 a.m.

* Home from church at 11:30, updated the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 4 to 10 December 2011 and it posted. Went in to watch football and read the paper.

* Watched NFL games, listened to Chargers game (we won 37-10 over Buffalo), and played with the iPhone.

* We left at 4:15 for Plaza Bonita to shop for Audrey, and had dinner at the Red Robin. Pretty good.

* Home by 6:15 p.m. to read, worked a bit on the Journal, checked Facebook, wrote CVGS Holiday Luncheon is Wednesday, 14 December.

* Went in at 9 p.m. to watch Chargers highlights, played with iPhone, finished my Lee Child book, forgot to post.

2) Monday, 12 December:

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 12: Charitable/Volunteer Work posted. Wrote Amanuensis Monday - the Will of Joseph Farwell (1641-1722).

* Checked RootsTech list of speakers, and wrote First Look at the RootsTech 2012 Schedule, then Tamura Jones finds the GEDCOM X playground.

* Found an error in my database for a Thomas Clarke, so fixed that and found some sourced data on the family and added several families. Then I found out they weren't mine. Drat.

* Saw Sheri's Google+ post about the SSDI, so wrote Social Security Death Index Gone from Rootsweb.com.

* Made a new, smaller GEDCOM for all my ancestral families, and Linda's, and exported it to FTM 2012 and then synced the new tree to Ancestry. Then added it to my iPhone, so now I have my ancestral families in a database. I may modify it because siblings of my ancestors, and some cousins, aren't included.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV news, and ate dinner, then more TV news. Played on the iPhone a bit also. No games yet!

* Online at 7 p.m. to read, then worked on the Journal. Got the thing edited then printed the odd pages - will do the even pages tomorrow to let ink dry.

* Worked a bit in Ancestry and WorldConnect and Google to add content to some Seaver families in the database.

* Added to the Best Of post, checked in on Facebook and Google Plus, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 10 December 2011

It wasn't much of a genealogy day, although we finally made it to the 21st century technology wise.

* Read email and blogs, and noted that Advent Calendar - December 10: Christmas Gifts posted. Answered some email, then figured out that I'd better write the SNGF post, so I did that. In the mean time, I listened to quite a few Christmas songs on YouTube trying to find the ones I wanted. Noted that Surname Saturday - FARWELL (England > Massachusetts) posted too.

* Remembered about the MySociety radio show, so tuned in late, then listened to all of it while I ate lunch. Noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Blog Caroling!!! posted.

* Wrote Blog Caroling on Saturday Night! Angels We Have Heard on High and then worked in the database for awhile. Got two families from the Eva Kempton books sourced.

* We decided to go shopping, so off to Target to get Audrey's skates, and then to Verizon to get me an iPhone and Linda a basic Samsung Galaxy tablet. Had some basic training, but it's going to be pretty hit and miss for awhile, especially on Linda's side. They set up email and Facebook for her, downloaded some free games, and we'll see how much she remembers tomorrow. Then to Filippi's for dinner and home by 7:15 p.m.

* Read email and blogs, then worked with the iPhone for awhile, and downloaded iTunes to the desktop. Added to the Best Of blog and checked Facebook, then wrote this post.

Uh-oh, only 15 shopping days left until Santa comes... actually went shopping today!

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 9: Christmas Weather posted and wrote Follow Friday - Pre-Christmas Genealogy Weekend Fun.

* Answered some email, got the pictures off both cameras, made some photos for Linda, and wrote The American Community Survey Questions.

* Left at 1 p.m. to go to Target to buy a bike for Lauren, then to Best Buy to look at Tablet and notebook computers for me (didn't buy one...) and then to the County Clerk/Recorder's office to get two death certificates for a correspondent. They had to get the images from the microfilm at the downtown office and fax them to the local office. I played on the real estate computers for awhile.

* Home by 3 p.m. to read, answered some email, and posted Review: "Genealogy at a Glance: Immigration Research."

* Went in at 5 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV and eat dinner.

* Online at 6 p.m. for Geneabloggers Radio, then wrote four Advent posts and the Surname Saturday post. Worked on the Journal - now have 15 pages done out of 16...need family input about a marriage and a death.

* Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 8 December 201

It was a stay-at-home genealogy day, but it feels empty...I didn't get much done today.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 8: Christmas Cookies! posted and wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Isaac Seaver's Birth Certificate.

* Worked on the CVGS Newsletter, got it wrapped up, and the master printed off.

* Wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 28: Creating an Undocumented Facts Report.

* Got sidetracked and did some online searches for Massachusetts folks - siblings of my ancestors, adding dates and places for them and their spouses. Only did about 15 searches on AmericanAncestors.

* Left at 2 p.m. to copy the CVGS Newsletter at the UPS Store, then took them to the post office and mailed them, along with 90 Christmas cards. Two tasks completed...but most of the work was last night.

* Home at 3 p.m. to answer email, worked some more in AA.org, then wrote Wild Card Searches on AmericanAncestors.org. AA.org stopped working for me...frustrating! Just a busy time, I think, or I need to reboot.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper, and eat dinner.

* Online at 7 p.m. to read, answer email, and fill out the American Community Survey for the census bureau. Interesting.

* Added three pages to the Family Journal tonight - 11 down, five to go!

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

It was a pretty full genealogy day - but I didn't do any online research or work in my database at all. I have too many projects to finish this week! I finished two tonight.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 7: Holiday Parties posted, and that My Rooted Technology - a Meme posted. Wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 182: Molster Farm and set it for late morning, but it went into Draft and I didn't see it until mid-afternoon.

* Wrote SDGS Family History Seminar Features Thomas W. Jones and set it for mid-afternoon.

* Gathered my papers for the CVGS Board meeting and left after 11 a.m. for lunch at McDonalds, then to the library by 11:45. Surveyed new site for the genealogy book collection, and then sat through the 2.5 hour meeting,

* Home by 3 p.m., read everything, and started in on Christmas letter printing. Got enough letters done for Linda to finish Phase I of the card/letter mail out. Now I need to finish the Family Journal.

* Answered some email, said goodbye to Tami (she taught in SD tonight), and we had dinner, and I watched the sports news, then took the trash out.

* Worked on the CVGS Newsletter and got it almost finished. Hope to publish it tomorrow and get the cards in the mail.

* Read blogs, added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and Google+, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 6 December 2011

We're back from our long weekend on Catalina Island. We drove up to Long Beach on Saturday morning, caught the 12:15 p.m. catamaran to Catalina, and were in Avalon by 1:45. It was a bumpy ride over. Found the hotel, got checked in, rested up, went out shopping, had dinner to celebrate Linda's birthday, enjoyed pictures with Santa Claus and the crowds out for the tree lighting. On Sunday we took a 4 hour tour around the island - to the airport, offroad to the beach, then Middle Ranch, and back to the airport for lunch, then back to Avalon. Saw buffalo and one fox and some birds. Pretty. Unspoiled except where the fire burned off vegetation in 2005. Rested up, did some shopping, had dinner. Checked my email and read blogs but did no genealogy work at all. We came home on Monday - caught the 11:45 catamaran to Long Beach, then drove home in time to see the Chargers game on TV on Monday night. I did write two Advent posts on Monday night just to get the juices stirring again, and worked through some of my email pile.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 6: Santa Claus posted. Wrote Tombstone Tuesday - Edwin and Alice (Corey) Richmond in Leominster, Mass.

* Worked in TootsMagic 5 and wrote Exploring RootsMagic 5 New Features - Post 5: The "On This Date" Report. Answered lots more email. Printed off CVGS things too. Checked up on plantar fasciitis - yep, I got it!

* Found some newspaper articles in Ancestry.com about several of the Knapp folks, so added data and sources to my database.

* Downloaded the FTM 2012 patch, and wrote Family Tree Maker 2012 Patch Released and set it for later. Worked on the shared tree in Ancestry.com adding content and sources found in newspaper articles.

* Made the Christmas letter labels for Linda. Worked in Find-a-Grave adding content and sources for Brookline NH and Evergreen MA entries by Carol P.

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to read the paper, have dinner, and watch the TV news.

* Online at 7 p.m. to read, then worked on family letter, and also on CVGS Newsletter. got the framing done, added some content, now need content from others.

* Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

I think I'm ready for the weekend. I blogged my fool head off again today...

* Read email and blogs, noted that Advent Calendar - December 2: Holiday Foods posted. Wrote My "On blogs and blogging" article in NEHGS 'The Weekly Genealogist" newsletter and then Follow Friday - Have Some Weekend Genealogy Fun.

* Worked a bit in RootsMagic 5, and wrote Exploring RootsMagic 5 New Features - Post 4: The CountyCheck Report and set it for early afternoon.

* Left at 11:30 a.m. to go to Costco for a Polish dog, then looked at the toys, and then to Plaza Bonita to look for birthday gifts for Linda. Foiled again...I wish I could find pretty clothes for her in her colors and styles.

* Home by 1:30 p.m. to read, answer some email, and write Follow-Up Friday - Comments about RootsMagic GEDCOM, Places, etc. Wrote the Surname Saturday post, and one other.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the news, read the paper, water the front plants, and doze off. Came in at 6 p.m. for Geneabloggers Radio, but dinner was called at 6:05 so I missed about 15 minutes of the show.

* Came back at 6:20 to listen to the show and chat along, and at 7:30 I wrote the SNGF post for Saturday and got the Best Of post ready to publish on Sunday. Checked Facebook, Google Plus and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

Got the 2011 photos and scans backed up last night to the external drive.

We are off to Catalina on Saturday via Long Beach to celebrate Linda's birthday, and will be back on Monday after noon to watch the Chargers game. blogging will resume on Tuesday at expected levels.

Phew! It was a genea-blogging-fool day! 12 posts... a record, perhaps?

* Read email and blogs, and posted Advent Calendar - December 1: The Christmas Tree. Then wrote Advent Calendar posts for the next four days too.

* Wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Isaac Seaver + Lucretia Smith Marriage Certificate and went looking for the house in Medfield. I think I found the location - see Where Did My Alpheus Smith family reside in Medfield, Massachusetts?

* Worked a bit in RootsMagic 5 on the CountyCheck system. Captured screens and wrote Exploring RootsMagic 5 - Post 3: The CountyCheck Feature and set it for later in the afternoon.

* Wrote Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - December 2011 and one more CVGS post. Answered some emails, went out to the pharmacy and shopping for Linda's birthday.

* Home by 3 to read, then started on the FamilySearch list but got sleepy. Worked on the Knapp stuff for awhile, and finished the FS list task. Went in at 5:30 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper and eat dinner.

* Online again at 6:30 p.m. to read, then wrote New Historical Record Collections at FamilySearch - November 2011. Added to the Best Of post and wrote the amanuensis post for Monday. Did some more Smith research.

* Checked Facebook, read the new GEDCOM into FTM 2012 and checked it. Wrote this post and I'm done, I think.

Got the Genealogy files backed up to the external drive last night. Need to do the pictures tonight.

Eleven months down, one to go. I wonder if I've done any of my new year's resolutions. I'm afraid to look!

* Read email and blogs, then wrote My "Welcome to the World of Genealogy Blogs" article in "The Weekly Genealogist" newsletter. Downloaded and read the latest NEHG Register. Wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 181: Visiting Liland Farm.

* Put together Exploring RootsMagic 5 - Post 2: The Research Manager and set it for late morning.

* Had lunch, got my briefcase and went off to the library for the CVGS program meeting. Program started at noon, Georgie Stillman talked from 12:45 to 2:15 on ten member heirlooms. She is so good!

* Home by 3 p.m. to read, then write Genealogy Paintings - Unique Ancestry Art and FamilySearch Home Page and Search Forms Revisited.

* Tami was here to teach a class, so we had dinner early, and I put the trash out, and watched the news.

* Back online at 6:30 to answer email, then worked in the database for awhile, and finished the three pages of Aunt Gerry's memories for the Journal. Went in at 9 p.m. to watch the end of the SDSU basketball game, then added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

It was a busy stay-at-home day, with much of the day spent in RootsMagic 5.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Tombstone Tuesday - Aaron Smith (1765-1841) in Medfield, Massachusetts.

* Got RootsMagic 5 working with my database converted by Bruce B. Checked out new features. Wrote RootsMagic 5 Webinar is Today at 4 p.m. PST and then Exploring RootsMagic 5 - Post 1: The View Screens.

* Had lunch, answered some emails, put a Research Log together in RM5, and wrote My RootsMagic 5 Problem was Solved Quickly. Wrote Checking Out the New FamilySearch Home Page and Search Forms.

* Worked more on the Research Log for William Knapp in RM5. Watched the RootsMagic 5 webinar and learned a few things. Not sure I can remember them all!

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV and eat dinner.

* Back online at 6:30 p.m. to print Linda's Cabo pictures, then started the Seaver-Richmond Family Journal for 2011, got all pages set up, and first five pages done.

* Added to the Best Of post, then went searching for sources for some Knapp births in New York City. Found them in FamilySearch, and added citations to the births and christenings.

* Checked Facebook and wrote this post.

Once again, I missed a journaling day on Sunday. Really not much to say! Monday was busy! Got the sniffles and sore throat, started the cold capsules. My right foot feels much better today.

1) Sunday, 27 November 2011:

* Read email and blogs, got the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 20 to 26 November 2011 ready to post at noontime.

* Went to church, home by 11:30 a.m., read some, went in to watch football. Watched Chargers game - lost to Broncos 16-13 in overtime. Drat.

* Back online at 5 p.m. to read, then ate dinner, and back to post CVGS Program is "Heirloom Discovery Day" on 30 November on both blogs.

* Worked in Ancestry.com finding census records for the Knapp children, and adding people, facts, notes and sources to the database. Checked Facebook and Google Plus.

Genealogy today was maybe 4.5 hours at most.

2) Monday, 28 November:

* Read email, and quickly posted RootsMagic 5 Released, then tried to down load it. Download went fine, including removing RootsMagic 4, paid for it, and tried to load my RM4 database and got an error. Now the RM4 database was partially converted, and I had no RM4 on my computer. Not to worry - found my RM4 registration code, downloaded RM4 again, copied the database from Dropbox to my Database file, and had RM4 running again. Sent RootsMagic customer support a message, and got a response. Tried to send RM4 file but it hung up in transmission. Drat.

* Wrote Read D. Barry Sheldon's blog, Above the Branches and continued worknig on the RM4/FRM5 problems.

* Once I had RM4 back, I wrote Amanuensis Monday - Obituary of Lydia (Griggs) Smith (1808-1889) (the info was in my RM4 database). Continued working in RootsMagic 4, added some spouses from the Smith family to the database.

* Had lunch, wrote Santa Claus videos at Ancestry.com's YouTube Channel.   Answered a bunch of emails.

* Left at 1 p.m. to go to the library to work on a query, but had no luck at all. Home by 2 p.m..   Edited my NEHGS article and sent it off one more time.

* Registered and added content to LostCousins, then wrote The LostCousins Website - use it for "Cousin Bait"   No matches for Richmans and Marshmans. Drat.

* Sleepy, so went in to watch the news and take a nap. Read the paper, had dinner, and watched the Saints game.

* Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, then test Mocavo UK and write Mocavo Genealogy Search Engine for the UK is Live.

* Sent a Backup file to RootsMagic at their request to try to solve my RM5 problem. Added more content to the Knapps in the RM4 database. Added to the Best Of post. Checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

I have not had much time to pursue my genealogy goals since Thanksgiving Day, which is understandable I guess.

1) Thursday, 24 November 2011:

* Read email and blogs, and noted that Happy Thanksgiving! and I Am So Thankful ... posted. I wrote My Mayflower Connections - 6. William Brewster and My Mayflower Connections - 7. Edward Fuller and set them for later in the day.

* Russ was working on my GEDCOM file, and we exchanged many emails as he found problems or quandaries, and we thrashed them out.

* Linda and I left at 3 p.m. to pick up Lillian, and we all went to Ben and Sharon's for Thanksgiving dinner. Their three kids, five grandkids, and three other family friends were there, for a nice group of 16. We were home by 8:30 p.m.

* Read everything, added to the Best Of posts, and answered some email.

2) Friday, 25 November 2011:

* No, I didn't go shopping at midnight, at 4 a.m., or anytime during the day. Linda did in the morning but not to the busy stores.

* Read email and blogs, and wrote Follow Friday - More Weekend Genealogy Fun! and then My Mayflower Connections Compendium (and an explanation).

* worked some more on Russ's emails, and wrote File Sharing and Brick Walls - Russ Examines My Database and set it for later. Kind of wary of someone finding all of my errors of commission and omission!

* Tami and James, Lauren and Audrey, and Spencer the basset arrived just as I was finished with the last post. While A and T slept, I did more work, writing The Strange "Y" in a Death Description Field in a RootsMagic 4 GEDCOM File. When A got up, I helped get her settled with a snack and we watched TV and cuddled.

* T & J left for dinner and a shopping date, and we took the girls to El Pollo Loco for dinner, then to Cold Stone for ice cream afterwards. We were home by 7:30 and finally got the girls in bed by 9. They were still awake at 10:15 when T & J got home.

* Needless to say, I had to hurry to get the two posts for Saturday done before bedtime at 11:30.

3) Saturday, 26 November 2011:

* nope, no shopping for me! Linda went swimming, I got up with the girls and got them breakfast and we watched TV. After T & J got up, I sneaked some time to read email and blogs and note that Surname Saturday - LNU (Massachusetts) posted.

* We left at 9:45 a.m. to go to Sea World. It was a beautiful day - sunny and blue skies and about 75 F. Took some pictures by the Christmas tree, then went to Dolphin show, walked through Turtles and Sharks, and then got lunch at Shipwreck Reef Cafe. Linda and I sat near the exit while the girls played at the playground. We left at 1:30 p.m. and were home by 2.

* Everybody was tired, my foot hurt, and I got a short nap watching football. Came in at 3 p.m. to make sure that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Historical County Boundaries posted. Matt wrote that I hadn't sent him my FORUM column, so I found it, edited it one last time, and sent it only a month late. Rats - forgot to send it in October.

* Went in to entertain the girls and Spencer (who badly chewed one of Linda's nice sandals) and we took Linda out for dinner for her birthday to Miguel's in Eastlake. We were home by 6:30 p.m. and T & J took their kids and dog home soon after. It's quiet around the messy house.

* I watched the SDSU football game - they beat UNLV 31-14 (so now 7-4).

* Online to read, add to the Best Of post, answer some email, check Facebook, and write this post.

It was a stay-at-home day again - did a lot of blog writing, one research log, a speaking calendar and some data mining.

* Read email and blogs, and wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 180: The View from Gjelle Farm. Put My Mayflower Connections - 3. Richard Warren and My Mayflower Connections - 4. Francis Cooke together and set them for later, but they didn't publish at the right time.

* Worked on transcribing the research log for William Knapp, including adding to what ended in 1993 based on the papers collected since then. Created some reports also, and a GEDCOM file, for Russ to review and work with.

* Checked into Research Logs and notes in FTM 2012, LFT 7 and RM 4. Wrote Research Logs in Genealogy Software to try to summarize my findings. got some helpful comments too. Answered several emails.

* Went in at 5 p.m. for dinner, then read the paper and watched the news and the SDSU basketball game. Aztecs beat Arizona 61-57.

* Back in the cave at 7:15 p.m. to read, then put a speaking/conference calendar together. Wrote My Mayflower Connections - 5. Stephen Hopkins. Wrote two Thanksgiving posts and one more Mayflower post for Thursday.

* Found that I didn't have good notes for some of my Mayflower people, so perused the WeRelate.org, Mayflower Families and Wikipedia biographies to add content to the database.

* Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 22 November 2011

Had my OASIS talk today, so I did get out and get a little exercise.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Sheri's Thanksgiving Video - Genealogy Fun! and Tombstone Tuesday - Carringer Niches at Cypress View.

* Worked a little in FTM 2012, then wrote My Mayflower Connections - 1. George Soule and set it for noon time, but it didn't post then. I had to post it later.

* I thought my OASIS talk was at 2 p.m., so I got the laptop case ready, then checked the calendar one more time and it said 1 p.m. Yikes! I left at 12:10 p.m. and was there by 12:35, and set up by 12:45 and the class started at 1:15 p.m. It went the full 90 minutes because of questions. I had about 45 attendees and they seemed interested. They liked the handout with lots of links. One of the attendees was a sorority sister of my mother.

* I was home by 3:30 p.m. to read, posted the Soule post, worked on my NEHGS article a bit, then wrote My Mayflower Connections - 2. William White. I was tired so went in to watch the debate and read the paper, eat dinner, and watch the end of the debate.

* Back online at 7:15 p.m. to read, answer some email, read some of the GEDCOM blog posts, read Google Plus, and finally worked in Find-a-Grave. Found quite a few entries for my Metcalf and Smith lines in Dedham and Medfield and Walpole MA, and up in Piermont NH.

* Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, talked to Lori for 30 minutes, and wrote this post.

My genealogy days - 20 and 21 November 2011

I was a bad boy last night - didn't write my journal here and rushed in to read my detective book. Now I can't remember what I did!

1) Sunday, 20 November 2011:

* Read email and blogs, and finished up the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 13 to 19 November 2011 post.

* We left for church at 9:30 a.m., not raining yet.

* Home by 11:30 a.m. to go to the Scanfest - scanned 41 images of Seaver probate records - now have to name them and stitch some together.

* Came in at 1 p.m. to watch the Chargers/Bears game. Forewent going to the wedding at church, Linda went. Chargers lost 31-20 in a decent game, but mistakes in the end cost us. Now 4-6 and no hope for a winning season, let alone playoffs.

* Online at 4:30 to read, and print out the OASIS handout for Tuesday. Transferred files to flash drive.

* Went in at 5:30 to read the paper, eat dinner and watch the Eagles/Giants game for awhile.

* Online again at 7 p.m. to read, then do another page of sourcing NH Marriages on Ancestry.com.

* Started a new Best Of post, checked Facebook.

Genealogy on Sunday was about 6.0 hours.

2) Monday, 21 November 2011:

* Read email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - the Obituary of Lyman Dwight Smith (1807-1889), and then worked in FTM 2012 and wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 27: Doing a Web Search - Case 1 - Source Citations.

* Gathered my three queries up and headed to the library. Got one done, the second one I left a critical piece of paper at home. Drat. Stopped by the UPS Store to copy my two-page handout for OASIS on Tuesday.

* Home by 1 p.m. to read, then write Breaking News: MyHeritage has Acquired FamilyLink and WorldVitalRecords and You Can Help Rescue Some Underwater Texas Cemeteries.

* Got the OASIS Talk files on the laptop and shut it down. Answered some email. Wrote What's "Bad" About Genealogy Software?

* Went in at 5 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV and eat dinner.

* Back online at 7 p.m. to read, then work on the NEHGS article. Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and google Plus and wrote this post.

I'm wondering if I should start my birthday and Christmas shopping soon? Linda's BD is 3 December.

* We left before 7 a.m. for the dolphin club breakfast at Carrows. I took the laptop, and left right from there for the CGSSD meeting at UCSD, starting at 9.

* Home by 12:30 p.m. to read email and blogs, noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Thanksgiving Edition posted, and ate lunch.

* Watched football, read the paper, took a nap.

* Online at 3 p.m. to read, then worked in New Hampshire Marriages on Ancestry, adding content and sources for Seaver people. Added quite a few new spouses and some sources. Only got about 80 covered out of about 500.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the Aztecs game (they lost to Boise State), ate dinner, watched USC game (they won) and the end of the Oklahoma game (they lost).

* Read, added to the Best Of post, checked some census records for some Seaver folks, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

It was a stay at home day again, I'm trying to rest my foot. At least I can walk normally for most of the day now.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Follow Friday - More Weekend Genealogy Fun.

* Worked in FTM 2012 for awhile, then wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 26: Doing a Web Search - Case 1 - Attaching an Image.

* Answered some emails, worked some more in FTM 2012, had lunch, and can't remember what else I did until I listened to Ruth's interview with me at FGS. Wrote My Interview with The Passionate Genealogist.

* Wrote Follow-Up Friday - Free-form sources in Family Tree Maker 2012 and then worked in the database a bit - transcribed one will but was sleepy so stopped.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV, water the front plants, add fluid to the widow washer in the car, read the paper, and eat dinner.

* Back online at 6:10 to listen to Geneabloggers Radio and chat with the folks. Another good show.

* Wrote tow posts for Saturday (since I'll be at the CGSSD meeting) , added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

Yikes, it's the middle of November and I haven't even thought about the annual Seaver-Richmond Family Journal until just now. Been too busy with everything else. Will the cousins and brothers miss it? Maybe I should not even send it and see who complains.

* Read email and blogs, and quickly wrote Archives.com is NARA Partner to Host 1940 U.S. Census Images, and then Treasure Chest Thursday - Hattie (Hildreth) Seaver's Death Certificate.

* Left at 10:45 a.m. for lunch with the Rohr retired engineers group. Sat with Dennis, had a good time. five guys asked me about genealogy research, four of them from England!

* Home by 12:45 p.m. to read, then worked in FTM 2012 for awhile, and finally wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 25: Doing a Web Search -Case 1.

* Answered emails for awhile, mainly on CVGS problems. Did some more in FTM 2012 on Web Searches.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV and eat dinner. Back online at 6:15 p.m. to read emails and blogs, then wrote the SDGS seminar summary article and emailed it off.

* Worked in Find-a-Grave and entered about 40 into RootsMagic database, all from one Boston area cemetery. Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

It was an interesting genealogy day, but I didn't really accomplish much besides writing some blog posts.

* Read email and blogs, researched and wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 179: The Voss, Norway Church. Wrote NEHGS Survey on Blog Reading, CGSSD Meeting on Saturday Features "Memories of Gettysburg" and Dear Randy: What are you going to do with your "Genealogy Stuff?" and set them for later in the day. Whew!

* Had lunch at home, left at 11:30 a.m. for the library and the CVGS Computer Group meeting. got the room set up and Shirley led the group through a number of sites. I was excited that my OASIS student, Joanne, joined CVGS and attended the meeting today.

* Checked out a book from the library, headed home to switch cars, then headed to the airport cell phone lot to await Linda and Marilyn 's arrival from Cabo. Got their at 2:40 p.m., so read the newspaper. Their plane was on time at 3:10, but they had to go through Customs, and they finally called at 3:45. I picked them up, and we got stuck in traffic, so didn't go the freeway. Got to M's house at 4:45, but she had no key and the neighbor with a key wasn't home. We all went to dinner at Pat and Oscars in Eastlake. Got to M's house at 6:15 and waited until 6:45 for the neighbor to come home. Stopped at Costco for gas, and home by 7:15 p.m. Helped Linda unpack and get the wash going.

It was another fairly full genealogy day, interrupted by a visit to the dental hygienist.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Tuesday's Tip - Check Out the Penny Postcards on USGenWeb Archives.

* Got cleaned up, left at 9:40 a.m. for the dentist office. Stopped at the bank on the way home. Two birds with one trip.

* Home by 11:30 a.m. to write Richard Sandler Wins a FREE RootsTech 2012 Registration! Had lunch.

* Worked in FTM 2012, then wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 24: Adding a Media Item.

* Found the Dodge County newspaper articles I copied in Beaver Dam, so transcribed two of them into the database. Added children to the Lyman Smith and George Smith families - they are cousins to my Devier Smith.

* Went in at 5:30 to eat dinner, watch TV, and read the paper.

* Back on the computer by 6:15 p.m. to read, then transcribe two more articles, and add sources for the articles and the census data entered before. Answered some email.

* Snooped around in the database looking for obvious errors using a random search - found some names in capitals, and then looked in the SSDI for folks in the database - found probably 15 to 20 that I didn't have, so added them. Mainly distant cousins of myself or Linda.

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

It was a pretty full genealogy day with my OASIS class, a little blogging and some data entry in the evening.

* Read email and blogs, and noted that Amanuensis Monday - the Will of John Brooks (1623-1691) of Woburn, Massachusetts posted. Gathered my OASIS stuff and left at 9:10 a.m. for Mission Valley.

* Got there by 9:35 a.m. and got the computer and projector set up, then brought up RootsMagic to demonstrate reports, and FamilySearch, Ancestry, Genea-Musings on the browser. All nine students came, and seemed to learn quite a bit for the entire class - they're all pretty actively searching for ancestors and family stuff.   They even asked about DNA testing, my blog, Jamboree, and several other things. Demonstrated using AmericanAncestors to get Mass VR data too.

* Stopped at Mcdonalds for lunch, went to Ralph's for groceries, and was home by 2 p.m. Noted that Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 23: Using an Existing Source Title posted.

* Read email and blogs, and Google Plus and Twitter, did some research for my student and emailed her two images, and eventually wrote Using the Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1915 Databases - Then and Now based on the OASIS class work. It's funny - two knowledgeable genealogists commented that they didn't know the Mass VRs were now on FamilySearch!

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper, eat dinner and watch the football game for awhile.

* Came in at 6:45 p.m. to answer email, read blogs and email, then worked a bit in the database adding a World War I draft registration Fact to RootsMagic and a source citation.   Started in on the Fisher article from the Kempton book, added several more generations, and tried to summarize the notes. I still have more to do won this surname before I'm done.

* Added to the Best Of posted, checked Facebook, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 13 November 2011

It was a sat-at-home day in order to rest my foot and get some useful genealogy work done. I'm not sure that I succeeded!

* Read email and blogs, and got the Best of the Genea-Blogs - Week of 6 to 12 November 2011 post finished.

* Watched football for awhile, read the paper, dozed off once, and back at about 11 a.m. to do something useful. Decided to work on adding Facts to some of my families to cover education, religion, residence, occupations, etc, based on available data. Had to modify some of the sentences for them to be sensible. Added Pension data to Isaac and Alvina.

* Back to watch football, eat lunch, and back at 2 p.m. to work some more. Found a whole set of poorly done family data (I think I merged a GEDCOM file for the Remley family) and went through taking out the WFT data and eliminating many families of no interest to me. Ran a problem report for age of mother at child's birth and sorted through those, trying to rationalize them. Only a few were from ancestral families, most were collateral.

* Watched end of 49ers/Giants game, then back online to check Twitter and google Plus, and work some more in the database. Pruned more families!

* Had dinner, watched some of Jets/Pats and back to work in FTM 2012, write two posts for Monday morning, and check the last OASIS class presentation again. Started the next Best Of post, worked more in the database, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

It was a rainy genealogy day - rained all day, and I did genealogy almost all day. My right heel is still really sore, to the extent of limping, and thinking about using crutches.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - HARWOOD (England > Massachusetts) posted.

* Left at 8:10 a.m. to drive through the rain to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley for the SDGS Fall seminar, with Lou Szucs of Ancestry.com speaking all day. Had a good talk with Lou before her four presentations. She mentioned me and Genea-Musings several times in her talks - nice of her. Had a good lunch with Jayne, Dona, Marna and others. Dozed off in the 4th talk for awhile...Lou said others did too. Said my goodbyes and drove home in driving rain.

* Home by 4 p.m. to read, note that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- A Veteran's Service and Gravesite posted.

* Went in to watch the rest of the Aztecs game at Colorado State - high winds, Aztecs won 18-15. Ate dinner, read the paper.

* Back online to read, put the Harwood material in the database. Checked Facebook and Google Plus. Went in to watch end of the Stanford game.

* Back online, messed around in medieval lineages for awhile. Did some email. Wrote this post.

It was Veteran's Day and the library was closed, and no mail, so I did genealogy for most of the day.

* Read email and blogs, posted Veteran's Day 2011 - Thank You, Gramps and then Follow Friday - More Weekend Genealogy Fun.

* Wrote What's My Morning Tech Routine? and set it for later in the morning. Answered some email.

* Left after 11 a.m. to go to Costco for stuff and a hot dog for lunch, then picked up George for our walk on the bayfront. Came home with a sore right heel - and can hardly walk, have lots of pain. Wonder what happened. Never had this problem before.

* Home at 1 p.m. to read, then write Follow-Up Friday - Responses to Family Tree Maker 2012 Series Comments and set it for mid-afternoon.

* Worked through one more surname from the Eva Kempton books - Larkin - entering data, notes and sources into the RootsMagic database. I only have a few more to do from that series, but lots more from other resources.

* Went in at 3:45 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV, and ate dinner watching the Carrier Classic basketball game from San Diego.

* Back online at 5:45 p.m. to read, then listened to Geneabloggers Radio and chatted away.

* Wrote two posts for Saturday, added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, entered Find-a-Grave data for about 15 people into the database, and wrote this post.

I feel like I wasted the day, but it was really quiet around the house with Linda off to Cabo for a week with her friend.

* Read email, but we left at 7:45 a.m. to pick up Marilyn, then drop both Linda and Marilyn at the airport for their flight to Cabo.

* Home by 9 a.m. to read blogs, note that (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 178: Dinner in Oslo with Genealogists posted.

* Reviewed Civil War Pension presentation, copied to flash drive, copied to laptop, ready to go! Had lunch, noted that Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 21: Creating a Cemetery Grave Marker Source posted.

* Left for the library at 11:30 a.m., got set up early, chaired the Research Group, gave my presentation, took notes on other stories/problems. Helped several folks with answers to questions.

* Home by 2:30 to read, then write San Diego Genealogical Society Seminar on Saturday Features Lou Szucs.

* Went out at 3:30 p.m. to mow the front lawn - it dried out a bit after two rain storms.

* Back in the house by 4:45 p.m. to eat dinner, watch a bit of TV, then came in at 5:30 p.m. to participate in a RootsTech phone call.

* Answered some emails, worked a bit in RootsMagic 4. Made a book to show capabilities of RM4 - pretty good. Discovered again that marriages and spouses of children in an ancestor with children narrative report aren't listed - a drawback!

* Started preparing my Civil War Pension File presentation for Wednesday's CVGS Research meeting. Modified the NARA and DM list to put it in date order instead of page number order.

* Wrote Videos from Ancestry Day at San Francisco 2011 and then Volunteer for Families for Forgotten Heroes and Unclaimed Persons Project.

* Sleepy, so went in at 4:15 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV, try to nap (didn't), and we ate dinner.

1) Sunday, 6 November: Rain again today.

* Read email and blogs, got Best of the Genea-Blogs - 31 October to 5 November 2011 ready to post after noon.

* Went off to church at 9:30 a.m., home by 11:30 a.m. Met a genealogist visiting her brother. Checked email and read a bit.

* Went in at 12 noon to read the paper, watch football and eat lunch. Watched the Chargers/Packers game, which ended 45-38 Pack. Rats. Grrrr. We ate dinner later

* Back on the computer at 7 p.m. to read, edit one more time and print out the CVGS Newsletter, print out the address labels, make sure the flash drive was in my pocket, etc.

* Started next week's Best Of post, worked in FTM 2012 on sources again, wrote two posts for Monday, checked Facebook and went in to read my book at 10:30. Where did the time go?

2) Monday, 7 November: Cleared up but cool and sunny.

* Read email and blogs, checked the OASIS presentation one more time, noted that Amanuensis Monday - the Will of John Heald (1611-1662) of Concord MA posted, gathered my laptop and newsletter stuff, and left at 9:15 a.m. for my OASIS class.

* Got there and was set up by 9:45, class started at 10:15 with questions, homework review, then presentation and demonstration of RootsMagic charts, Message Boards, and Ancestry Trees. Helped several students with problems in the last 45 minutes, others used the free time to search online. Emailed several the census records we found together. Left at 1 p.m.

* Stopped at McDonald's for lunch, then published the CVGS Newsletter at the UPS Store.

* Home by 2:30 p.m. to read, noted that Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 19: Creating U.S. Census Source Citations posted. Read everything, and got really sleepy.

* Went in at 3:15 to watch TV, read the paper and nap. Did some garage chores, then we ate dinner, and watched TV.

* On the computer at 6:30 p.m. to read, answer several emails, work a bit in FTM 2012, then worked for awhile in Find A Grave and added content and sources to my database. That is fun and relaxing, addictive even, and good for the database too!

I spent most of the day watching live streams from the San Francisco Ancestry Day - not what I planned, but it was good.

* Read email and blogs, then went off to my men's group breakfast at 8 a.m.

* Home at 9:30 to read, noted that Surname Saturday - PRESCOTT (England > Massachusetts) posted, and write Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - The Ancestry.com YouTube Channel and set it for early afternoon. I watched several YouTube videos in the process.

* I was all ready to do some serious research work (after all, I had all afternoon...) but then the Ancestry Day Livestream caught my eye, and I watched presentations by Anne Mitchell, Crista Cowan, Jeanie Croasmun and Laura Dansbury about using Ancestry.com for various online research tasks. There went the afternoon!

* I went in at 3:45 p.m. to watch football, read the paper and take a nap. The Aztecs game came on at 5 p.m. so I ate dinner watching that. They eventually won 35-7.

* Back online at 7 p.m. to read, answer email, scanned some family documents and the ten VR certificates I was missing (including my mother's death certificate!). Named the files and put them in the right places, ready to be attached to Facts.

* Worked on the CVGS Newsletter, and got it 100% complete. It needs a good proof review still. I'll publish it on Monday.

* Added to the Best Of post (noting that only one other person has done SNGF so far...), checked Facebook and wrote this post.

* Added some document images to my RootsMagic database, and then added content for two Wheeler families to my database.

A stay-at-home day and almost all genealogy work...with some progress.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - a 61st Wedding Anniversary Celebration (that was a long transcription - added it to the database). Wrote Marian's "Cracking the Case of Nathan Brown's Parents" Webinar and set it for late afternoon.

* Answered some email, did some CVGS work, and had lunch. Swabbed my cheek #1 for the FTDNA autosomal test too.

* Worked in FTM 2012 for awhile making source citations, then wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 17: Creating a Vital Record Certificate Source Citation. Watched Thomas's latest Explorinar.

* Saw that my source citations for many vital record certificates were poorly done and not up to EE standards, so spent the rest of the afternoon fixing them. Got the VR collection out and compared records to sources to images, and found I have about 8 that I haven't scanned for some reason. There's more work to do!

* Went in at 6 p.m. to read the paper, eat dinner and watch TV news.

* Online at 7 p.m. to read, then work on the CVGS Newsletter. Got it maybe 60% done - the easy part is done!

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook, and worked with Find A Grave adding content and sources to the White/Oatley families in Killingly CT. Wrote this post.

One more day in October...it's been a fast month!

* Read email and blogs, got Best of the Genea-Blogs - 23 to 29 October 2011 ready to post after noon.

* Got ready for church, left at 9:20 a.m., went to Hallowe'en Carnival afterwards - lots of small children there. Ate lunch there.

* Home by 12:15 p.m. to check in on Scanfest. Chatted but mostly scanned material from the Seaver probate record collection. Many pages were oversized so did them in parts, then will need to stitch them together somehow.

* Went in at 2 p.m. to watch football, read the paper, and take a nap. Went out at 5 p.m. to clean up back yard and trim the front rose bushes. Too warm to mow the lawn.

* We had dinner then back on computer at 6:30 p.m. to read, work with the files and capture more Ancestry census images. Wrote WikiTree Press Release - WikiTree Makes Collaboration Less Frightening. Printed out my masters for the three OASIS classes.

A stay-at-home Saturday with no grandchildren vying for attention and getting it...so what did I do? Hours on end on the computer. Made some progress, too.

* Up early and out for a 7 a.m. breakfast with Linda's Dolphin club.

* Home by 8:30 p.m. to read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - PAINE (England > Massachusetts) posted.

* Wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Where Do You Fit? and set it for after noon.

* Decided to capture as many US Census records as possible from Ancestry.com for my families. The previous images are mainly GIFs and relatively small, the latest Ancestry images are JPG and fairly large. In the process, I implemented my latest computer file naming scheme - I hope this one sticks! Got the Seaver folks done, then started at top of the Surname list and worked my way down to Plimpton by 4 p.m.

* Went in to watch football highlights and read the paper. We left at 5 p.m. for Outback for dinner - Linda finally had a good dinner somewhere! We'll go back more often now.

* Home by 7 p.m. to watch the SDSU Aztecs football game.

* Came in halftime with SDSU losing 27-13, read everything, added to the Best Of post, worked in Ancestry and files some more to finish the R names.

* Checked Facebook, wrote this post, and back to watch the end of the game.

I did venture out briefly today for my weekly constitutional with George (I know, I seem to miss two or three weeks) - this is my only exercise this week, until the lawn mowing on Sunday.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Follow Friday - Ideas for Weekend Genealogy Fun. Worked on Follow-Up Friday - FTM 2012, Great Blogs and the ePrize and set it for late morning.

* Answered some email, and worked a bit making charts in FTM 2012. figured out how to do the Direct-Line Descendants chart!

* Had lunch, left at 11:45 a.m. for my walk with George on the bayfront.

* Home by 1 p.m. to read, then worked on Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 13: Making a Direct-Line Descendants Chart.

* Did some sorting of collected papers to find the next batch of data for entry to the RootsMagic database. Found I didn't have data on James a. Smith, so found marriage record and several census records and added them to the database. That was fun. No death data, though.

* Went in at 5:15 p.m. to watch the World Series, read the paper, check the mail, and have dinner.

* Online at 6:10 p.m. to listen to Geneabloggers Radio and then back to the recliner at 7:30 for the rest of Game 7 of the Series.

* Online again at 8:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, write the Surname Saturday post, check Facebook, make a list of the Dill ancestors to check for probate records, and write this post.

The days of October are falling faster than the leaves off the trees, it seems...and the hurrier I go, the behinder I get, it seems.

* Read email and blogs, checked Ancestry to see if my free subscription was registered yet (no...), and wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Alma Seaver's 1962 Autopsy Report.

* Got into FTM 2012 again, and made a nine generation book - failed again. Wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 12: How Big a Book Can It Make? The answer seems to be at least six or seven generations with lots of notes, and maybe eight. I think it's funny that nobody but Russ and Caroline seems to care...but I will press on! It's good blog fodder, if nothing else.

* Decided to work on my FORUM column that's late, and got quite a bit done today. Need to proof it again and do a little more research.

* Checked in on Ancestry.com subscription and I'm good to go after nudging the AARP lady. Sent Class 1 handout to the students, and called the two that didn't attend Class 1.

* Wrote RootsTech 2012 Genealogy Conference Video and then Off My Chest: Give Me One Column for Reading Online Magazines.

* Added the Bradstreet data from the Eva Kempton Volume 2 book to the database, and sourced appropriately.

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to watch the ball game,m eat dinner, read the paper, read NGSQ, and start a new book as the game went on for over 4.5 hours. Good game. Got the dishes done between innings.

* Called Ancestry.com to cancel my account so that AARP could contact them and add the one-year subscription I won. My part was completed, but AARP did not call! Nicely worded email followed.

* Left at 11:15 a.m. to have lunch at McDonalds, then to the library for the CVGS Program meeting.

* Home from the library by 3 p.m. to read, then write Ancestry.com Inc. Reports Third Quarter 2011 Financial Results. Answered email.

* Went in at 5:15 p.m. to read the paper, eat dinner, and not watch the baseball game - rained out.

* Online at 7 p.m. to read, worked in FTM 2012 creating different charts and reports. Worked in RootsMagic 4 adding Facts for Education, Residence and Occupations, plus some Burial facts.

Yikes, only 6 more days in October left. I feel like I've done nothing good this month, and am further behind than when I started the month. Probably due to the two stints of being with the grandkids.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Tombstone Tuesday - Levi Holcomb (1763-1854) in Burnett, Wisconsin.

* Started over with FTM 2012, made several books and wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 10: Making an Ancestral Family Book - Part 1. Worked some in RootsMagic 4 also trying to do the same thing there - RM4 is much faster!

* Had lunch, and wrote The Moment I Knew and set it for mid-afternoon. Worked a bit more in FTM2012 and RM4.

* Left at 2:15 for my doctor's appointment. Waited over half an hour to be seen - unusual for this medical group. Took all of 10 minutes to tell me to keep applying the creme...$40 co-pay, $84 cream pack. Sh!t! Home by 3:30 p.m.

* Read everything, then started work - finally! - on my FORUM article due two weeks ago. Matt hasn't complained yet...

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch TV, read the paper, and eat dinner.

* Back online at 6:30 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, and added notes and sources to the database from the Eva Kempton book for two ancestral families.

* Checked Facebook, Twitter and google Plus, answered some email, and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 24 October 2011

This was a really different genealogy day for me...taught my OASIS class, worked in FTM 2012, wrote no blog posts, and not much else. I feel like I wasted the day.

* I tried to print the 10 copies of my OASIS class syllabus last night, and the black ink crapped out after one copy. Nope, none in the drawer. I have the one copy - I'll just take it to the copy shop in the morning.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Amanuensis Monday - Will of Ephraim Hildreth (1654-1731) of Westford, Mass. posted. Packed up the laptop, flash drive and one syllabus copy and was at the copy shop before 9 a.m. They open at 8 a.m.... cool, no problems! Except I forgot to take the receipt with me.

* Got to the OASIS classroom at 9:35 a.m., got set up on their laptop, checked in with the staff, taught my class to 6 receptive students, and met Linda afterwards in the parking lot. She brought In 'n' Out for lunch, so I ate it while she drove to her 1:15 p.m. medical appointment about her soy allergy in Poway. Afterwards, she dropped me at my car, and she went to Costco to get several items, including more computer ink..

* I got home from her appointment at 2:15 p.m., read everything, and noted that Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 9: The "Ahnentafel Report" posted. Russ commented on it, and we exchanged emails the rest of the afternoon and evening.

* Went in at 5:15 p.m. to watch the World Series game, read the paper, and eat dinner. Back online after 6:30 p.m. to do more emails. Linda brought in the printer ink, and I opened one pack and installed the black. I went to put the rest of the packs in my "printer ink place" and found that I already had some. Drat. I never checked there...only in the drawer. Senior moment again. Drat again. Now I hope that the printer doesn't crap out in the next six months or so!

* worked creating a book in FTM 2012. Had success, but it sure took a long time to get a 10-generation ancestral report done (832 pages), and the Index never finished. Rats - will have to do it all over again, I fear. That wasted a lot of time.

* Went in to watch the end of the baseball and football games, then back online to read, add to the Best Of post, check in on Facebook and Google Plus, and write this post.

Genealogy today was about 9.5 hours. I still have my FORUM column to write, and finally think I have a topic. That's the hardest part - the topic for a column that publishes three months later!

My family history days - 20 and 21 October 2011

These days have not been full genealogy days because the grandgirls came on Thursday at 11 a.m. along with the new grandhound, Spencer. Tami and James are in La Jolla, where Tami has a conference.

Both days have been mainly reading and blogging when I can find a spare 20-30 minutes. We've stayed home and played in the house, in the back yard, and taken walks with Spencer. Spencer is a young basset hound puppy, and is very active. He wants to grab anything that he can get his mouth around and shake it to death, or shreds. Our challenge has been to keep things, or take therm, away from him. We shut the doors to all of the bedrooms and the genea-cave!

The girls have been great, although they don't go to sleep as well as they used to. Lauren has impressed us with her vocabulary and third grade reading left (she's in first grade), and really shares/plays well with Audrey, who is 3. They are really good, sweet, happy, smart little girls - we love them so much!

So you can see - not much genealogy work, but lots of family history! They go home on Sunday.

We talked for two hours showing how to find things or do things on the computer, and then in Ancestry.com.

* Home by 2:30 p.m. to read, answer email, then wrote Do you Have "Comments" on Your Ancestry Member Tree?

* Went out at 4:45 to pull weeds, put out the trash, watch the World Series game, read the paper, and eat dinner.

* worked in FTM 2012 some more trying to sort out the GEDCOM issues. Wrote Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 8: Receiving and Installing a GEDCOM File.

* Had lunch, then got my four Beginning Computer Genealogy presentations and handouts edited for the OASIS class that starts next Monday. Answered some email.

* Wrote Is Family History Knowledge Declining? and then Ancestry has Added Many Vital Records Collections.

* Worked some more in FTM 2012 - still no solution - and then went in at 5 p.m. to eat dinner, read the paper and watch a little TV.

* Online at 6 p.m. to read, then add content and sources to the RootsMagic database using the Whitney article from a book copied at ACPL. Checked Facebook and Google Plus.

* Added to the Best Of post, then worked on reorganizing the computer files. Got quite a few files and document images into the new file folder system. Wrote this post.

* Worked in FTM 2012 some more, and posted Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 7: More GEDCOM Trials. After lunch, went to the library to return a book, and get another. Added comments to the FTM2012 post, then emailed with Russ until 4 p.m.

* Wrote Guess Who Won the AARP "Discover Your Roots" ePrize? and then Linda needed to work on the computer. Went in and took a nap, then read the paper, finished one book, ate dinner, did some chores, and watched the football game.

* Back online at 7 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, take some phone calls, then worked on File Organization more. Need to go back into the files and use my file naming protocols.

* Worked in FTM 2012 for awhile, and wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 5: Importing and Exporting Media Files with GEDCOM, and set it for later in the morning.

* Gathered up my Wisconsin research stuff, and headed out for lunch at McDonald's, then to the library.

* Hosted the CVGS Research Group - we had 16. Presented my Lessons Learned vacation talk, and it seemed to be well received. Second hour was sharing by others, then I showed a bit of FTM 2012 to several who were interested. The Syncing worked.

* Home by 2:30 p.m. to read, wrote some blog posts, including CGSSD Mini-Fair on Saturday, 15 October 2011. Answered some email too.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the baseball game, read the paper, eat dinner, take out the trash, and water the front plants. Too hot to mow the front lawn.

It was a strange day...but I got a lot done and I'm almost ready to go off to Santa Cruz on Thursday to see the grand-boys.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Tombstone Tuesday - Anna and Torger Leland in Deerfield, Wisconsin.

* Was answering email when the Internet connection went down at 9 a.m., and didn't come back until 11:30 a.m. Laptop didn't work either. Called Cox at 10 a.m. and the message said they were working on it. Called cox again at 11:30 a.m. and the guy said things looked OK. Sure enough, I was back online.

* During the downtime, I sorted my paper piles again (to be entered, to be sourced, and to be filed) - maybe I can keep them straight now. Started on the Lessons Learned pitch for the CVGS Research Group on Wednesday. Got it pretty much done by the time the Internet came back. Scanned some images for inclusion in the presentation.

* Worked in FTM 2012 and wrote Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 4: Census Source Citation Comparison for almost two hours.

* Added material to the Lessons Learned presentation, saved it as a PDF, copied it to the USB drive and then to the laptop.

* Worked on the checkbook for over two hours - done and better organized.

* Went in at 5:15 p.m. to watch baseball, read the paper and eat dinner.

* Home by 11:30, and read and worked a little in RootsMagic before going in at 12:15 p.m. to watch football and eat lunch. Watched the Chargers game (we won 29-25), and did some chores too.

* Online at 4:30 p.m. to read, print off the CVGS Newsletter to copy, worked on the financial report, then we had dinner and watched the news.

* Wrote two blog posts for Monday in anticipation of not having much time. Started the new Best Of post, checked Facebook and Google Plus, and worked some more in RootsMagic.

Genealogy on Sunday was maybe 4.0 hours at most.

2) Monday, 10 October:

* Read email and blogs, helped Linda get set up for her group meeting and luncheon at our house. Noted that Amanuensis Monday - the Will of Thomas Pierce (1584-1667) of Charlestown MA posted.

* Sorted through my financial paper piles and put the notebook together. Gathered up the CVGS Newsletter stuff at 10 a.m. and went off to the UPS Store to publish it, then took copies to post office to mail on Tuesday.

* Home by 11 a.m. to read, then had lunch with the nice ladies. Put stuff away after they left. Online at 1 p.m. to note that Exploring Family Tree Maker 2012 - Post 3: Syncing an Existing Ancestry Member Tree posted and to write My picture is in the newspaper.

* We left at 2:30 p.m. for the conference with our financial advisor, went to Hunter's Steak House in Mission Valley for dinner, and home by 6:30 p.m.

* Read, sent the CVGS Newsletter off to the members, and added content (notes and sources) to Thomas and Joseph White in the RootsMagic database. I still have lots of paper to use to add content - lots from the vacation trip, and from my earlier paper piles. I'm doing the vacation papers first!

It was a full day, but it wasn't all genealogy. Some friends made family history.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Surname Saturday - PEIRCE (England > Massachusetts) posted, and then wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Genealogy Database Statistics.

* Packed up the laptop, and went off to the SDGS meeting in San Diego. Met Linda Serna and we chatted for awhile - we exchanged cards. Linda gave two excellent presentations on interesting topics - I loved the record examples she used in her talks. What a wealth of experience and material.

* High-tailed it down the freeway to Bonita for the CVGS Workshop at 1 p.m. Shirley and Gary talked about Windows computer systems, then Gary and I talked about Family Tree Maker. I installed FTM2012 on my laptop and loaded in a recent GEDCOM - it took about 90 minutes to do it.

* Left just before 3, and high-tailed it home. We left at 3:15 for the barbecue restaurant to get food for Linda, then Io Sherry's house for the wedding at 4 p.m. Saw cousin Ken Wing there and we talked some Wing family genealogy.

* Home just after 7 p.m. to watch baseball, then SDSU football game, read the paper, then my book.

* Came in at 9 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook and write this post. SNGF had a great response tonight!

The best-laid plans often get messed up - today is a good example.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Follow Friday - Weekend Genealogy Fun and More on Norwegian Names. Wrote Follow-Up Friday: Creating a Naturalization Source Citation and set it for early afternoon.

* Went to the pharmacy, then Costco for a hot dog, and picked up George for our constitutional on the bayfront. A nice day - blue sky, about 70F, no wind.

* Home by 1 p.m. to start in on adding content to an Ancestry Member Tree, then using FTM2012 to sync it. The plan was to capture the moves and show how to do it in a blog post. Well, three hours later it finally finished. Too late now. I did email, wrote the Surname Saturday post, did some computer file reorganization, and added content to my RootsMagic file while I waited.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to watch the end of the ball game - Brewers beat Snakes 3-2 in 10 innings. Then watched the Cards-Phils game while eating dinner.

* Back online at 7 p.m. to read, then joined Geneabloggers Radio in progress (I forgot about it!). Worked in FTM2012 a bit investigating things - got the screens for the blog post I didn't write yet.

Ah, a pretty good genealogy day, complete with doctor visit and nap.

* Read my email and blogs, then wrote Tombstone Tuesday - Severt T. Leland (1804-1889) of Deerfield WI. Got cleaned up.

* Wrote Photos from my Visit to the Wisconsin Historical Society Library in Madison WI and set it for later in the morning.

* Got out FTM 2012 and installed it easily. Used the last GEDCOM file from RootsMagic and imported it, and then uploaded it to Ancestry through the program. Didn't work the first time, but did the second. Did more with it, but it hung up later on media downloads from Ancestry.

* Had lunch, started on the FamilySearch update post. Left at 1 p.m. to go to the skin doctor, who prescribed a cream for my head and arms for the pre-cancerous bumps. Home by 2:15 p.m.

* Worked more on the FamilySearch post, and wrote New FamilySearch Historical Collections - September 2011.

* Went in at 4 p.m. to watch the playoff games, read the paper, take a nap have dinner, and read my new Sandford book.

* Back online at 7 p.m. to read, write Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - October 2011 and another Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe post for tomorrow.

* Messed around with charts in FTM 2012. Checked Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

After the two days on the road to Victorville, we hosted Linda's brother and his wife for three days, so these days were pretty much non-genealogy days.

1) Saturday, 1 October 2011

* Read email and blogs, and then went off to my men's breakfast at 8 o'clock, returning at 9:30 a.m.

* Noted that Surname Saturday - BOYDEN (England > Medfield MA) posted, and wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - List Your Matrilineal Line(s).

* We left at 11:30 a.m. for the airport to pick up Paul and Deb. They were late. We went to lunch at the Boathouse on Harbor Island, then drove past my grandparents house on Point Loma, and out to the Cabrillo National Monument to view San Diego from up high and enjoy the static displays about Cabrillo and the lighthouse. Then we drove along the ocean through Ocean Beach, and home to Chula Vista for dinner. There was even some talk of ancestors and our two week Midwestern vacation.

* I managed to keep my reading up to date after everyone went to bed early.

2) Sunday, 2 October:

* Linda went off to church early. I finished Best of the Genea-Blogs - Week of 25 September to 1 October 2011 and set it for noon time.

* We left at 10 a.m. for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park near Escondido. Tami, James, Lauren and Audrey drove down from Victorville to meet Paul and Deb - they had not met the girls. The girls were great, we enjoyed the park, and Paul and Deb got to know our granddaughters a bit. They were impressed! We headed for home at 4 p.m., and stopped at Black Angus in Chula Vista for dinner, then home to have Paul's birthday cookie cake, and watch some football highlights.

* I managed to write a post for Monday and start a new Best Of post before going to bed.

3) Monday, 3 October:

* Read email and blogs in the morning, noted that Amanuensis Monday - Probate Records of Samuel Rice (1634-1684) of Sudbury MA posted.

* I showed Deb the database for her ancestry, we did some searching on Ancestry for her grandfather without success (still!), and talked to her mom on the phone trying to track down her grandfather's sister, Lola.

* We left at about 10:30 a.m. to go shopping in Otay Ranch Center, and I got a look at the iPad2. Not overly impressed. We made it to Miguel's in Eastlake for lunch at 12:45 p.m., and at 2 p.m. to took off for a look at the Mexican border (I took a wrong turn, didn't get across!), the Silver Strand, a walk on Coronado beach up near the Naval base, then across the bridge through downtown to the airport, arriving at 3:45 p.m. We dropped them off, said goodbye, and were home by 4:15 p.m.

* I got on the computer (finally!), read everything, and wrote Family History Month Infographic from Archives.com.

* Went in for dinner, watched some of the baseball games, watered the front plants, and washed the dishes.

* Back online at 6:30 p.m. to read, then write CVGS Fall Seminar Summary: Donna Bradley – “Ways of Getting Over, Around, or Under Your Brick Walls”, CVGS Fall Seminar Summary: Anne Bowman – “Irish and Scots-Irish Genealogy Research” and CVGS Fall Seminar Summary: Donna Bradley – “American Indian Research" on the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog.

* Answered some emails - lots more to answer after five days essentially tied up! Added to the Best Of post, checked in on Google Plus and Facebook, and wrote this post.

My non-genealogy days - 29 and 30 September 2011

We left on Thursday at 11 a.m. for a whirlwind trip to Victorville to see Tami, James, Lauren and Audrey, and to attend a Grandparents Day ceremony at Lauren's school. We also went to Lauren's soccer practice on Thursday night. We got home on Friday just after 7 p.m.

1) Thursday, 29 September:

* Had some excitement after breakfast, the YMCA called to say Linda had been stung by a bee in the pool and the paramedics were treating her, would I please come get her. I did, and she drove home with me following her. She took her benadryl and then slept a bit.

* Read email and blogs, noted that Treasure Chest Thursday - A Wisconsin Name Change in 1866 posted, and wrote a post for Friday. The Seaver Family History Mystery Tour Compendium posted later in the day.

* We left at 11:30 a.m. for Victorville, stopped at the hamburger place in Temecula, and got to Tami's just in time to go pick up the girls at school. They were happy to see us.

* Ate dinner at their home, went to Lauren's soccer practice, and home. I read email and blogs on the laptop.

2) Friday, 30 September:

* Didn't sleep well... ate breakfast and played with Audrey, we watched Dolphin and Toy Story 3. I read email and blogs on the laptop. Noted that Follow Friday - Weekend Genealogy Fun and Canadian Genealogy Websites and Blogs posted.

* Went in to take a nap at 10:45 a.m., up at 12 noon to go have lunch at El Pollo Loco, then went to Lauren's school for the Grandparents Day show.

* Back to Tami's house at 3 p.m., packed up and took off. Stopped in Temecula again for dinner, then home by 7:15 p.m.

* Listened to Geneabloggers Radio show, and then read email and blogs, and added to the Best Of post. Wrote the Surname Saturday post too. Checked Facebook, wrote this post.

It was a fairly busy day here in the Genea-Cave, and at the library too.

* Read email and blogs, wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 172: Rolling Prairie, Wisconsin. Got cleaned up.

* Wrote Serendipity Happens? Dear Randy: Can you Help with my Lelands? and set it for later in the morning. Answered some email. Had lunch.

* Left at 11:40 a.m. for the library, lugging the laptop. The CVGS meeting started at 12:15 with a talk by Arnie Botts on how a private investigator conducts online background searches. Talked to Sam quite a bit, and was home by 2:30.

* Read everything, Wrote two meme posts for Thursday and Friday. Wrote Finding Material in the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives. Played around in RootsMagic trying to get the Fact sentences straightened out. Finally unchecked the boxes for many of them in reports and charts.

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to watch the Padres game, eat dinner, read the paper, put out the trash, water the back yard, wash the dishes, and read the new Chula Vista book. Padres won 9-2 over Cubs to finish the season at 71-91, in last place in NL West. Watched some of the NY/TB, Bos/Bal and Atl/Phi games too.

* Back online at 9 p.m. to read, check Facebook, add to the Best Of post, and write post for Friday. Wrote this post.

What, I missed journaling on Wednesday? Completely forgot after getting home from the Padres game. Now I wonder if I can remember what I did on Monday.

1) Monday, 26 September:

* Read email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - the Will of Thomas Rice (1626-1681) of Sudbury MA and then Family Tree Maker 2012 TreeSync - Differences Between Online and Desktop Trees.

* Ate lunch at 11, and went off to the library at 11:30 to consult with Ruth and Wanda on CVGS stuff, and do a research query. Found it easily!

* Home by 1 p.m. to read, answer some emails, doze off at the computer, finally wrote FamilySearch Research Courses - 209? 273? 262?

* We left before 5 p.m. for the trolley, ate at the Tin Fish, and were in Petco Park by 6:30 for the Padres game at 7. We won 2-0 over the Cubs (now 70-90 on the year).

* Home by 10:30 p.m. to read, check Facebook, but didn't blog.

Genealogy on Monday was 8.0 hours.

2) Tuesday, 27 September:

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Tombstone Tuesday - Mary Smith (1805-1865) in Burnett WI. Answered some emails, and did a little research for them.

* Wrote Can I Ever Tame (even manage?) my Genea-Monster? and then had lunch.

* Added the John Warren of Watertown info from the Eva Belle Kempton book to my database - had most of it already.

* Got into the FamilySearch databases and tried to complete the New Hampshire marriages in the database. Got through the first 100 - I already had some, added several new marriages, and added sources for some also. Still lots to do.

* Wrote Family Tree Maker 2012 TreeSync - Questions Answered.

* Went in at 5:30 p.m. to watch TV news, we ate dinner, I watered the front plants.

* Back online briefly at 6:30 p.m. to read, added to the Best Of post and checked Facebook.

* Padres game started at 7, lost to Cubs 6-2 after leading 2-1 into the 8th. Drat.

* Wrote this post, checked Facebook and I'm done!

My genealogy day - 25 September 2011

This wasn't a very big genealogy day...at least for me, not with NFL football on the air.

* Read email and blogs, and got Best of the Genea-Blogs - Post-Vacation Edition ready to roll after noon.

* We left for church at 9:30 a.m., and were home by 11:30 a.m. I really miss Scanfest! Wrote Genealogy Dream Job at ProGenealogists and went in to watch football.

* Had lunch, watched end of Giants/Eagles game, and then watched Chargers/Chiefs game. My Boltz won 20-17, and it was close all through the 4th quarter after the Chargers dominated the first half. SD is 2-1, but they haven't impressed. slow start, injuries, poor players, or poor coaching? All of the above, I think.

* Went out at 4:15 to mow the front lawn. Back in at 5:15 to eat dinner on the patio.

* Online at 6 p.m. to read, answer email, and wrote "Finding the Living - and Maybe the Dead" CVGS Program on 28 September. Wrote another post on Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog.

* Added VRs, notes and sources for two more articles from the Eva Belle Kempton book Part I (obtained at ACPL) for William Cheney and John Rogers.

* Received email from local asking about first women voters in Chula Vista. Checked 1908-1912 and 1914 Voter registration files on Ancestry/com and found quite a few in Otay precinct (includes CV) and sent them to the focal person.

* Went in at 9 p.m. to watch Charger highlights, then washed dishes, and back online at 9:40 to write this post. Will check Facebook too.

My genealogy day - 24 September 2011

This was a typical genealogy Saturday for me - a society meeting, some blogging, a Padre game.

* Up early to read email and blogs, gathered laptop for CVGS Seminar. Left at 8:15 for Bonita.

* Got to CV Golf Course for CVGS Fall Seminar, and welcomed by CVGS staff after my vacation. Talked to several folks, then got laptop set up near Claire's booth. Connected OK to Internet there.

* Seminar started at 9 a.m. with Gary's pitch about CVGS, then Donna gave her keynote talk about overcoming brick walls without any visuals. Anne had visuals for her talk on Irish and Scots-Irish research. Put comments on Google Plus and took notes in MSWord file on laptop.

* Lunch was pretty good - sat with Sam, Claire, Karen and Steve. Talked a bit to Ruth and Wanda.

* Sat through Donna's talk on American Indian research seething - the first 45 minutes was about the pure-at-heart Indians and evil white men. The second part gave a few pointers on finding resources, but no visuals and no handout yet. Internet didn't work after lunch for me - it would never connect. I took notes on laptop.

* Home by 3 p.m. to read, note that Surname Saturday - FISHER (England > Medfield MA) and Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - What does Spokeo Know About You? posted.

* We left at 4 p;.m. for the Padres game. Picked up sandwich at Subway, took trolley to downtown San Diego, walk over to Petco Park, was in my seat by 5 p.m. Padres won 3-0 over Dodgers. I had Filippi's pizza slice for dinner, and an ice cream, then visited Rudy's section in 5th inning and had cream puffs and cookies.

* Home by 8:45 p.m. and finished up Saturday's "Good Genea-Reads" then wrote Sunday's Best Of post.

* Tried to make a Google map of our vacation travels and couldn't figure out how to do it. There must be an easy way! I should Google "how to make a Google map of travels." Tried Mapquest too...same result - frustration. It can't be that hard!

* Wrote this post, checked Facebook and Google Plus, and I'm done.

It was another full genealogy-oriented day, although I did go out of the house for a walk and to get the car gassed up. We had a bit of rain in the morning, and it was cool and foggy all day.

* Read email and blogs, wrote Follow Friday - Weekend Genealogy Fun and J.K. Rowling's "Who Do You Think You Are?" episode (England).

* Checked Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus. Had lunch, then left at 11:40 to pick up George for our weekly walk on the bayfront. I told him about our vacation. Stopped to get 14 gallons of gas on the way home - the light was on!

* Worked on the Barron data from the Eva Belle Kempton book, adding names, dates, places, notes and sources.

* Wrote Dear Randy: " I've searched everywhere for my ancestor. What Now?"

* Wrote the Surname Saturday post, then worked on the Bullard data from the Kempton book.

* Went in at 5:15 p.m. for dinner, then did some chores. Back online at 6:15 p.m. to write the SNGF post. Listened to Geneabloggers Radio show until 8:30 p.m.

* Watched the Padres game with dodgers - we lost 2-0 (now 68-89 with 5 games left to go).

* Finished up the Friday's "Good Genea-Reads" post, checked Facebook and wrote this post.

My genealogy day - 22 September 2011

We got back from our 16 day vacation on Wednesday, 21 September, at 9 p.m. I couldn't find my keys to get us in the house at first...but we had given the neighbor one so no problem. I found them in my suitcase under all of the clothes Linda didn't wear (yes, hers was full, so she added stuff to mine). My suitcase was overweight at Chicago, so removed the FGS bag of papers and the two AAA travel books and it was good to go. I carried them on board.

After a decent night's sleep, I worked at genealogy all day and had a good bit of fun.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Rose Anna (Noel) Seaver's Death Certificate and then Visiting the Beaver Dam (Wisconsin) Community Library.

* Sorted through the two bags of paper to cull the throwaway stuff, get the research material into separate folders, charge both cameras, capture the goodies from FGS, etc. Copied FGS syllabus and September photos from flash drive, then the recent photos from Linda's camera.

* Wrote Ancestry.com New Subscription Discount and Family Tree Maker 2012 Pre-Sale. Ordered FTM2012 online for $23.99. Should have waited to learn about the discount code - it could have been $19.99. Drat.

* Answered several emails, some from two weeks ago. Got onto Twitter and Google Plus to add followers and read.

* Entered the Norwegian data and sources into my RootsMagic database. Was contacted by a Leland researcher two weeks ago and now I have the answer for him from my trip research! That's cool.

* Watched Marian's webinar on Connecticut Resources. An excellent summary!

* Went in to eat dinner on the patio at 5:30, and back online by 6. Answered more emails. Printed out the two Casefile Clues reports and read them.

* Watched the JK Rowling WDYTYA (English version) episode - very well done, interesting records, touching story. I hope that makes it to the US series next year.

* Put Thursday's "Good" Genea-Reads together. Wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 12.0 hours - it's great to be back! I wonder how badly my Genea-Musings stats have fallen off, even though I posted every day. Not too bad, actually. Good.

1) Saturday, 3 September:

* Read email, then printed off the CVGS Newsletter masters, before going off to my Men's brekfast at 8 a.m. Stopped at the UPS Store to copy, stamp, label and mail the CVGS Newsletter.

* Home by 10 a.m., and noted that Surname Saturday - STEARNS (England > colonial Massachusetts) posted (written the night before).

* Read blogs, and added to the Best Of post, then tuned into the MySociety Radio show to hear about Ancestry Content Publishing. Had lunch, gathered laptop, and off to Bonita.

* Went to CVGS workshop at Bonita Library for Susi's Pennsylvania Research talk. Plussed the talk a bit... and noted that Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Ahnentafel Roulette! posted.

* Home by 3 p.m., checked email, took very short nap, and we left at 3:35 p.m. for the trolley to downtown San Diego. Ate at the Tin Fish, and were in our Petco Park seats by 5:15 p.m. for the Padres game.

* Padres lost 5-4 (9th straight loss, now 60-79). Home by 10 p.m. to read and add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, but didn't journal.

2) Sunday, 4 September (brother Stan is 65 today!).

* Read email and blogs, got the Best of the Genea-Blogs - 28 August to 3 September 2011 post finished and ready to post.

* Off to church at 9:20 a.m., and home by 11:45 a.m. to read, answer some email, and check Google Plus.

* Went in at 12:30 p.m. to eat lunch, read the paper, watch TV and take a nap. Watched the Padres game - we won 7-2 over Rockies.

* Online at 3:45 p.m. to write 1940 U.S. Census Contractors Questions and NARA Answers.

* Went out at 5 p.m. to mow the front lawn, then water the plants. Came in for dinner.

* Online at 6:30 p.m. to read, write some blog posts for the next two weeks, organize my folders, make some maps for the trip, check Facebook and write this post.

I finished a few tasks today...good thing, since we leave on Tuesday. Now to pack.

* Read email and blogs then wrote Follow Friday - Labor Day Weekend Genealogy Fun. Wrote FGS 2011 Conference - my Saturday, 10 September Selections and 1000Memories Breakfast Panel at FGS Conference on Thursday and set them for later.

* Finished up the Seaver sources and to-be-reviewed lists, edited them to print, and printed all three lists out for the notebook.

* Had lunch, and went off at 12:15 to the library and then got a haircut. Home by 1 p.m. to read, then worked on the CVGS Newsletter and got it finished.

* Wrote I'm almost ready now to go research! and answered some emails. Printed out several reports to go with me to Wisconsin.

* Went in at 5:30 to read the paper, watch TV, almost dozed off, and we ate dinner on the patio again. Watered the front plants.

* Listened to Geneabloggers Radio and chatted until 8:30, then went in to watch the end of the Padres game. They lost their 8th straight game, now 60-78 and buried in the NL West cellar.

* Online to add to the Best Of post, check Facebook and write this post.

It was a decent genealogy day - the clock is ticking towards the FGS Conference, and I still have lots to do to prepare for that.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - Amy Oatley's 1865 Death Certificate.

* Got cleaned up, and tested the car's lights. Not good. Drive down to the repair shop and left it, and walked the mile home uphill and downhill. Uphill was hard, I stopped at Bjorn's to catch my breath and catch up with him.

* Back to work, looked in the BLM GLOrecords site and found that Leland and Natvig did not get a land patent in Dane County - good to know. Made my hotel reservation for RootsTech too.

* Saw Archives.com announcement, so researched and wrote Archives.com has 1790 to 1930 U.S. Census Records and then saw the email that came in an hour earlier. Had lunch.

* Wrote Searching Census Records on Archives.com and then Content from SmallTownPapers and Gannett Leaving Fold3. Answered several emails.

* Decided I'd better do something useful, so worked on my Source Reference List for Seaver - got the E to R segment done, only S to Z to go. We went down at 4 to pick up the car - the lights seem to work OK.

* Went in at 5:30 to eat dinner on the patio. Online again at 6:15 to edit the CVGS Newsletter. Wrote New FamilySearch Historical Collections - August 2011, and added it to the newsletter. Got it about 90% done, waiting for Susi again.

* Recalled that the Chargers were playing, so went in at 7:30 to watch some of it. Ho hum. Watched more of it and read my book - almost done.

* Added to the Best Of post, checked Facebook and Google Plus, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 10.0 hours. Six blog posts...no research...some progress toward goals.

Eight months down, four to go in 2011. The days seem to fly by.

* Read email and blogs, then wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 168: Bess and Gerry at the Train Station.

* Worked in Earthpoint and Google Earth to find exact locations of Natvig and Leland farms in Dane County, then wrote Planning for my visit to Dane County, Wisconsin.

* Took my affidavit to AAA to get it notarized, then to McDonalds for lunch, the bank for money, the library for a book, and home.

* Wrote Genealogy Days in Chula Vista - September 2011 and "Research Methods in Pennsylvania" on Saturday, 3 September at Bonita Library.

* Worked on my source reference list for the Seaver side - got through A to D in about two hours.

* Got email from Max and wrote Story: Family Tree DNA confirms two NFL players are half-siblings.

* Went in at 5 p.m. to read the paper, watch TV, eat dinner, put the trash out, and pull weeds. My exercise!

* Started in on the CVGS Newsletter - needs to go out on Saturday. Got almost everything into it that was submitted, plus my own contributions from the blog. About 70% done, I think.

* Added to the Best Of blog, checked Facebook, talked to my daughter, and wrote this post.
