My genealogy days - 30 and 31 August 2012

These were not BIG genealogy days...

1)  Thursday, 30 August 2012:

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1880 U.S. Census Record for Thomas Richmond Family and then My FTM 2012 File Synced with Ancestry - only needed more Patience and set it for later in the morning.

*  Found significant double date errors in the FTM and AMT databases - tracked it down to a GEDCOM problem somewhere between RM5 and AMT, probably in the LFT reading the RM GEDCOM.  Drat.  What now?  That doesn't work...so will have to upload the RM5 database to FTM2012 to AMT.

*  Wrote Riding the Ancestry Time Machine and went in for a nap and watched TV around 2 p.m.

*  We left at 3:15 p.m. for Lake Elsinore to pick up the girls.  Hit traffic in Temecula and got to the outlets at 5:15, got the girls, stopped in Murrieta at Chik-Fil-A for dinner, and home by 8:15 p.m.

*  Got the girls fed, bathed, pottied, and down for bed by 9:30.  I was distracted by the Chargers game.  Audrey didn't go to sleep until after 11:30, nor did I!

Genealogy this day was about 6 hours.

2)  Friday, 31 August 2012:

*  Audrey came into my bed at 5 a.m. and we didn't sleep much after that.  Up at 7 a.m. to get her breakfast and drink, Lauren up at 8 p.m., fed her too, they watched TV and played all morning.

*  I was able to read email and blogs, then write Follow-Up Friday - Helpful Reader Comments From This Past Week and Legacy Family Tree Cruise 2013 News and set it for later.

*  Wrote the Surname Saturday post, and two posts for the CVGS blog.  Made a new GEDCOM and uploaded to an AMT.  Also uploaded it to FTM2012.

*  We all went down for naps at 1 p.m.  I was up at 2 p.m. to read, work in the database a bit, and at 3:45 p.m. we left for Barbara's to swim.  The girls are fishes...fun time!

*  We got home by 5:30 to change clothes, went to El Pollo Loco for dinner, and home by 6:45 p.m. to watch the Padres game.  They won 5-4 over the Rockies.  Girls got baths, read to and in bed by 9 p.m.

*  Online at 9 p.m. to read, then started Sync of new FTM2012 tree to AMT at 9:15 p.m.  Added to the Best Of post and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 5.5 hours.

My genealogy days - 28 and 29 August 2012

The days of August have dwindled to a precious few...but my Padres keep winning, and I keep blogging.

1)  Tuesday, 28 August 2012:

*  Read email and blogs, then researched and wrote Tuesday's Tip - Check Out State Online Archives.  Wrote Genealogy Q&A Site Proposal Needs Support and set it for later in the morning.

*  Worked a bit in the database, emailed with Russ and Duff about the FTM TreeSync problem, and added to the Best Of post.

*  Wrote The Perfect Plan ... is that you, Snidely? and gathered my papers to go to the ByLaws meeting at Olive's house.

*  ByLaws meeting went pretty well, we're almost done.  Left at 4:30 p.m. so we could go to the Padres game.  I forgot my ticket so we drove three miles back home to get it.  Made it to the 5:30 trolley and ate at The Tin Fish, in the park by 6:45 p.m.  Alas, Padres lost 2-0 to the Braves.

*  Home by 10:30 p.m. to read, check Facebook and didn't do a journal post.

Genealogy this day was 7.5 hours.

2)  Wednesday, 29 August 2012:

*  Read emails and blogs, then wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 220: Gerry and Bud in California in 1942 and Ancestry.com U.S. Census Records FREE Until 3 September soon after.

* Watched Judy Russell's webinar on Circumstantial Evidence - very well done, with great examples.  Answered some email.

*  Checked Facebook and Google+, added to the Best Of post, and looked for something to write about.  Finally made a small GEDCOM in RootsMagic 5 and uploaded it to a new AMT to see if media was transferred.  Nope.  And some long sources are truncated too, as I thought.

*  Went off at 2 p.m. to the bank and gas station.  Home by 2:45 p.m., had to wait for Linda to get off the computer.

*  When I got on at 3:15 p.m., wrote Dear Randy: Three Questions about Ancestry Member Trees.      Set the FTM 2012 upload to a new AMT off at about 4 p.m., I think.

*  In to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and take a nap.  Linda came home at 5:30 p.m. to fix dinner, and we watched the Pads win 8-1.  I went out to mow the front lawn and water the plants, then in by 7 to watch the convention speeches.

*  Online soon after 8 p.m. to read, answer email, check Facebook, do more on Find-A-0Grave (through #1320 in Seaver), and write this post.

*  The FTM 2012 upload to the new AMT finished at 10:12 p.m, although media are still loading.  I wish I had written down the starting time!  Drat.

Genealogy today was 7.5 hours.

My genealogy day - 27 August 2012

This was a fairly full genealogy day until the evening, when the Padres game ate up some time.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Amanuensis Monday - Petition for Land Ownership Sale, scanned Michael's new book, and then wrote Book Review - Online State Resources for Genealogy E-Book, Version 2.0 and set it for later in the morning.

*  Started the process of making a GEDCOM in RootsMagic 5, read the GEDCOM into Legacy Family Tree 7.5, made a GEDCOM file there, and read it into Family Tree Maker 2012.  That worked well - the databases in LFT and FTM look pretty good, with none of the blips I see when I read a GEDCOM created in RM into FTM.  Then I tried to upload the FTM file into a new Ancestry Member Tree and it stalled.  Several times, during the day.  Shoot...back to the drawing board.  Ancestry says to phone them...

*  Having wasted an hour or more doing that, I worked in the database for therapy, and also did some online research to answer an emailer's question.  Found some interesting records that don't answer the question, and actually highlight the probable error!

*  Wrote More on Sourcing Names and Relationships, and went back into research mode adding content and sources to the database.

*  Went in at 5:45 p.m. to eat dinner, then worked online answering emails and doing limited research.

*  Finally went in at 7:45 p.m. to watch the Padres game.  We won, 3-0 over the Braves.

*  Online at 9:40 p.m. to read, add to the Best Of post, check Facebook, and write this post.

Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My genealogy day - 26 August 2012

This was not a big genealogy day - Sundays rarely are. But I got some useful things done.

*  Read email and blogs, and finished off the Best Of post and set it for after noon.

*  We went off to church at 9:30 a.m. and were home by 11:40 a.m.

*  Tuned in to Scanfest, and actually scanned two pages.  Looked all over for my Richmond notebook and finally found it right where I put it, on the floor standing up without a label.  Noted that Best of the Genea-Blogs - 19 to 25 August 2012 posted.

*  Noticed first earthquake at 12:30, and second one at 1:30 p.m.  Guessed it was a 5 to 6 magnitude about 100 miles away.  Turns out there were 4 that were in the 5.4 range over several hours, and hundreds smaller ones, near Brawley in Imperial county.

*  Went in at 1:15 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, and take a nap.  Pads won 5-4 over the Dbacks (7th in a row, 14 of 20, now 59-70).

*  Online to check on the earthquake, checked Facebook and Twitter, and answered some email.  Got query asking if they could publish a photo in a historical society newsletter - sure, I said.  Struggled to find the photo in question (note to self: get those photos in the scanned folders into the Ancestor Files folders!).

*  We ate dinner, then watched a little TV and weeded the front plants, before getting online again at 7 p.m.

*  Tried to standardize file names in Carringer Ancestor Files collections...got quite a few done.  Still debating how to do multiple persons names in a photo.  Moved some photos to the appropriate folder also, and deleted some duplicates.

*  Did 40 Seaver entries in Find-A-Grave, now up through #1280.  Then did 20 more Seaver entries from Vermont BMD cards - up to #100.

*  Started the next Best Of post, added to it, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 5.0 hours.

My genealogy day - 25 August 2012

Yikes, we're almost to the end of August 2012 - 66% done for the year.  I wonder what my goal status is?  I don't dare look.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Surname Saturday - NORMAN (England > Massachusetts).  Then wrote Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Ancestor Name Roulette and set it for early afternoon.

*  Listened to Marian's radio talk show - interesting guy, sounds like an interesting book.  Don't want to miss next week's show - Martin Hollick will be on!

*  Worked in the database most of the afternoon.  Fixed some errors, added lots of content and sources for Mass. people in the 1800s.  Collected info on Blair Mertes's ancestry - found parents, grandparents, cousins, etc., and added them to the database.

*  Went in at 3:15 p.m. to watch the end of the Little League World Series game.  Petaluma scored 10 runs in the 6th to tie Tennessee 15-15, then lost it in the 7th, 24-16.  A wild game.

*  Online at 4:15 to do more database work, and back to eat dinner at 5:15 p.m., read the paper, water the front plants, and watch the Padres game.  Pads won 6th straight, 9-3 over Dbacks.

*  Online at 8 p.m. to read, check Facebook, write Neil Armstrong - Rest in Peace, Son of Americaadd to the Best Of post, and work in the database doing random checks and adding content.

Genealogy today was 9.5 hours.

My genealogy day - 24 August 2012

I did genealogy most of the day, until dinnertime when the Chargers lost and the Padres won!

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Follow-Up Friday - This Week's Helpful Reader Comments.

*  Had a meeting with FamilySearch online to look at the Merge facility in FamilySearch Family Tree.  Offered advice, got some tips.  I think it looks pretty good.  Should be useful.

*  Worked a bit in the database adding sources and images to Name, Spouse and Parents Facts, also added some media and sourced them to my Seaver folks.

*  Researched in NJ Probates for awhile, found Stephen Cutter's 1823 will , and wrote about it in Looking for Stephen Cutter's Will in New Jersey Probate Records on FamilySearch.

*  Left at 2 p.m. for Olive's place to go over the CVGS ByLaws.  Lasted until 5, we're still not done.

*  Home by 5:30 p.m. to watch the Chargers game, read the paper, eat dinner, and then watch the Padres game.

*  Online at 9:15 p.m. to read, check Facebook, look for more NJ wills without success, then worked through 40 Find-A-Grave Seaver entries.  Through #1200.

*  Added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 9.0 hours.

*  Read email and blogs, wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1900 U.S. Census Record for Thomas Richmond Family and then worked in the Mass. Town Records for awhile and wrote Ancestry.com Loaded More Massachusetts Town Records.  Added some Boston Deaths of Seavers to the database also.

*  Watched Geoff Rasmussen webinar on "Researching with Geoff - Live!" although I had some Replay problems and couldn't get it to finish.

*  Answered some emails, worked in the database for several hours adding content and sources, then wrote Do You Source Your Person's Name? Spouses? Parents?

*  Went in at 5:30 p.m. for dinner, then watched TV news and read the paper until 6:30 p.m.

*  Online again to write CVGS Annual Picnic Summary, add Sources to Names, Spousal relationships and Parent relationships in RootsMagic.  Added data and sources from Find-A-Grave to the database - got through 1160 on Seaver surname.

*  Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 12.5 hours.

My genealogy day - 22 August 2012

It feels strange not having a society program, or a talk, to give for several weeks.  I've been on a treadmill of sorts, and getting off means that I can do more research - another treadmill!

*  Read email and blogs, and wrote (Not So) Wordless Wednesday - Post 219: Aunt Gerry in 1950, and then Ancestry.com iPhone/iPad App - Filters Work!

*  Worked on a query from email for awhile - solved the problem, added the info to the database, and sent the report to my correspondent.  That lead to doing some research in the Vermont VR cards on FamilySearch.

*  Left at 1 p.m. for the pharmacy, then the library, and home by 1:45 p.m.  Read, then wrote Mining the Vermont Vital Records, 1760-1954.  Did some more research and added data and sources to the database from the Vermont cards.

*  Checked Facebook, Twitter and Google+, then went in at 4 p.m. to watch the Padres game, read the paper, take a nap, put out the trash, water the front plants, and have dinner.  Pads beat the Pirates 4-2 for 4th win in a row.

*  Online at 6 PM to watch the APG webinar on Marketing for Pros...nothing I didn't already know, pretty much a waste of time for me.  Did other things...

*  Created several pages - one for Links and the other for my talks.  Still more to do!

*  Did more data entry and source citation from the Vermont BMD cards - got through the first 80 out of 519.

*  Checked Facebook, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.

Genealogy today was 10.0 hours.

My genealogy day - 21 August 2012

I spent most of the day doing genealogy things, and then we went to the Padres game.

*  Read email and blogs, then wrote Tech Tuesday - Ancestry.com's Android App, then All States in 1940 U.S. Census Now on FamilySearch.  Worked in the Ancestry tree also trying to figure out what showed up in the App.  Synced the AMT to FTM 2012 also, and edited the census master sources, and synced again.

*  Worked in the database adding media items to the ancestors - got back into the 1700s and found some records in Mass. Town Records on Ancestry.  Got intrigued by the John Phillips - Hannah Brown marriage, and wrote Having Fun in the Summertime - is the name Brown?

*  We left at 4:50 p.m. for the trolley, had dinner at the Tin Fish, and got into Petco Park by 6:20 p.m.  Padres won 7-5 in 10 innings - we left after 9 innings at 10:35 p.m.  Trolley finally came at 11:15 and we were home by midnight.

*  Wrote this post...

Genealogy today was 8.0 hours. (was 89, a typo, corrected, thanks, Jill!)

My genealogy (?) weekend

Actually three days with limited genealogy results.

1)  Saturday, 18 August 2012

*  Read email and blogs, packed up and away by 8:15 a.m. for UCSD and the CGSSD meeting.  Sat in the FTM group, and offered comments and advice when asked.  Then gave my GPS and RES talk - went 90 minutes, but folks seemed to like it.

*  Home by 12:45 p.m. to eat lunch, note that Surname Saturday - READ (England > Massachusetts) posted in the morning and had to force Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - What's Your Ancestral Name Number? to post.  Tweeted it.

*  Worked in the database a bit, and went in at 3:30 to read the paper.  We left at 4:15 p.m. for the trolley to go to the Padres game at 5:35.  Lost to the Giants 8-7 in a good game.

*  Home at 9:45 p.m. to watch the first half of the Chargers game, then read, add to the Best Of post, and off to bed.

Genealogy today was 6.5 hours

2)  Sunday, 19 August 2012:

*  Read email and blogs, got the Best Of post edited and ready to go.  We went off to church at 9:30 a.m. and were home by 11:30 a.m.

*  We left at 4:45 p.m. for church and the Mortgage Burning party.  Lots of church history, pastors Reeves and Rauch were there, and Paul stayed the night with us.

*  Able to start the next Best Of post, but that was about it.

Genealogy this day was 3.0 hours.

3)  Monday, 20 August 2012:

*  Checked email and blogs, noted that Amanuensis Monday - Petition for Administration on the Estate of Frank W. Seaver posted.

*  Talked to Paul for over an hour about genealogy.  He left, and we left, at 10:30 a.m.  We stopped at Subway for sandwiches then to the CVGS Annual Picnic at Bonita Library.  I took my wall chart and multi-page printouts of Linda's and my pedigree charts.

*  Home by 2 p.m. to read, then researched and wrote Ancestry's iPhone App has a New Look.  Upgraded the tablet Android Ancestry.com app and tested it, and captured some screens too.

*  Sorted out my Dropbox files, transferred pictures to the desktop computer, deleted them off Dropbox, and added the recent Talk files.

*  Worked in the database for awhile adding content and sources.  AmericanAncestors was really slow today.

My genealogy day - 14 August 2012

This was the day I started my jury duty stint - and that it ended.  Good.

*  Read email in the jury room, noted my iPhone battery was low.  Oops.  Read my book instead.  About 150 were in the jury lounge.  They called two panels of about 50 each and my name wasn't called.  They released us before 11 a.m.  I went to the library and got a book to read for the next week or two.

*  Home by 11:30 a.m. to read email and blogs, note and tweet that Tuesday's Tip: Check Out Genealogy Book Links and Look at These San Francisco Coroner's Records! posted.

My genealogy day - 2 August 2012

Today was an all genealogy day, until the carpet/vacuum folks came by.  But I recovered...

*  Read email and blogs, and wrote Treasure Chest Thursday - 1880 U.S. Census Record for Isaac Seaver Family and then RootsMagic 5 Workshop in Bonita CA on Saturday, 4 August and "Who Do You Think You Are?" at Torrance, California Centennial and set the last one for early afternoon.

*  Worked in RootsMagic for awhile on my workshop for Saturday.  Need to lay out a script of some sort.  Made a GEDCOM file for use on the laptop.  Watched the end of the Padres game, Reds won 9-4.  Drat.

*  Worked up a Research Log for Joshua Smith.  Started to create his family also.

*  Wrote Source Citations Created by Ancestry.com Mobile App and set it for later in the afternoon.

*  Free carpet cleaning the young lady said at the door ... then the guys came at about 2 p.m. to do it and proceeded to demo the Kirby vacuum cleaner while pretending to get ready to shampoo the carpet.  demoed how our present vacuum is a piece of crap, and showed us out much dirt it doesn't pick up.  Linda wanted it, so we finally bought it... they didn't leave until after 8 p.m.  I finally had a bowl of beef stew at 7:30 p.m. for dinner.  Remind me to say NO to any door-to-door salesperson every time!

*  Worked in the database throughout the carpet saga... adding sources and content to the database.

*  Got the August 2012 CVGS Newsletter started ... about 50% done.

*  Back online to add more content and sources.  Ancestry search was up and down, so concentrated ion Mass VRs on American Ancestors.

*  Checked Facebook, answered email, added to the Best Of post, and wrote this post.
